How to Choose a Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing Service

Choose the test for the question you actually want answered—not the company with the longest feature list. An ancestry-and-relative-matching kit, a traits report and a health-risk report can come from the same seller but use different variant sets, interpretations, regulatory pathways and privacy settings. Before buying, identify your goal, inspect the exact report and its intended use, then compare consent, matching, retention, deletion and clinical-support policies.

This guide focuses on evidence and rules relevant to U.S. consumers. FDA oversight, the insurance protections described here and laboratory credentials differ in other countries; check your local regulator and law before ordering.

Start with the question you want the test to answer

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic testing is not one standardized product. A service built for ancestry estimates may be useful for family-history research but is not a clinical diagnostic test. A wellness or traits report may describe selected characteristics without establishing disease risk. A health report may examine only a limited set of variants and cannot account for every genetic, environmental or lifestyle contributor to a condition.

Write down the decision you hope the result will inform. The usual categories are:

23andMe Ancestry Service Personal DNA Test Kit, Ethnicity & Heritage
  • MAP YOUR ORIGINS ACROSS 5,000+ REGIONS: Ancestry Composition breaks down your ethnicity across 5,000+ geographic regions worldwide, the most detailed ancestry breakdown of any consumer DNA service. Ancestry Timeline estimates how many generations ago your most recent ancestor from each population lived.
  • FIND LIVING RELATIVES: Opt in to DNA Relatives to see up to 1,500 people in the 23andMe database who share DNA with you, from close family to distant cousins, and message them directly. Your Family Tree builds itself automatically based on your DNA.
  • DISCOVER WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE: See how your DNA may influence physical features, sensory preferences, and habits across 30+ traits, including cilantro taste aversion to hair texture to deep sleep.
  • TRACE ANCIENT MIGRATIONS: Maternal and Paternal Haplogroup reports follow your ancestors' migration paths across continents over thousands of years (paternal haplogroup requires a Y chromosome). Find out how much of your ancestry can be traced back to the Neanderthals.
  • PRIVATE BY DESIGN: Your DNA data is encrypted, protected, and always under your control. Enhanced security measures are implemented to keep your information safe. Subject to 23andMe’s Terms of Service and Privacy Statement at 23andMe online.
  • Ancestry and relatives: regional estimates, family-history clues and DNA-relative matching.
  • Traits and wellness: selected characteristics or general wellness information.
  • Carrier status: whether you carry particular variants that could matter to biological children.
  • A specified health question: a named condition or risk report with a defined intended use.

Do not assume that two services measure the same thing because both use a saliva sample or display a percentage. Providers can test different variants, use different reference populations and interpret evidence differently, so their reports may legitimately disagree.

Check the exact product, not the company’s reputation

Identify the named report and its intended use

For any health-related claim, record the report name, the condition or variants it covers, the intended user and the action the provider says the result supports. “Health insights” or “clinically proven” is too broad to evaluate on its own. Look for a plain description of what was tested and what was not tested.

Ask whether the report is intended for screening, carrier information, risk estimation or diagnosis. A consumer report that estimates risk is not interchangeable with a test ordered and interpreted in clinical care.

Understand what FDA authorization does—and does not—mean

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration evaluates a particular test and its intended use. FDA considers analytical validity (whether the test measures what it claims), clinical validity (whether the measurement predicts the stated health condition) and the company’s claims and consumer-facing explanations. Authorization for one report does not authorize every report, kit or service sold by the same provider.

FDA’s consumer overview says ancestry tests are not FDA-reviewed and that low-risk general-wellness tests generally are not reviewed before marketing. Moderate- and high-risk medical-purpose tests are generally subject to review. Check the FDA’s current list for the exact report rather than relying on a seller’s broad statement that its service is “FDA approved.”

“A positive direct-to-consumer genetic health risk test does not indicate that an individual will develop a given disease or a condition.” — U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Direct-to-Consumer Tests.

Interpret health results as limited risk information

A negative result is not an all-clear

DTC health tests often look at selected variants rather than every variant associated with a condition. A negative result means the tested variants were not detected under that report’s design; it does not eliminate inherited risk, other genetic causes or non-genetic causes. Family history, symptoms and conventional clinical factors may still warrant medical evaluation.

A positive result is not a diagnosis

A positive risk or carrier result can be important, but it does not establish that you have a disease or will develop it. Do not start, stop or change treatment, screening or medication solely from a consumer report. Discuss a consequential result with a qualified clinician or genetic counselor. Confirmatory clinical testing may be appropriate, particularly before making a medical, reproductive or insurance-related decision.

Keep raw data and third-party interpretations in perspective

Some services let you download a file and upload it to another analysis site. That file is not automatically a clinical result, and a third party may use different quality controls, variant classifications or privacy practices. MedlinePlus advises consumers to assess the outside service’s credibility and privacy terms before sharing raw data. Once downloaded or uploaded, the original provider’s protections may no longer apply.

Compare services on the same decision axes

Use one checklist for every candidate. A service that is excellent for family matching may be a poor fit for a specific health question.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters
Primary purpose Is the service built for ancestry, relatives, traits, carrier status or a named health report? The purpose determines what the test can reasonably tell you.
Report scope Which variants, conditions, populations and relatives are covered? What is explicitly excluded? Different variant sets and reference data produce different results.
Evidence and oversight What analytical and clinical evidence is described? Does FDA authorization apply to this exact report? Authorization and evidence are report-specific, not company-wide.
Matching controls Is DNA-relative matching optional? Can you choose whether to be seen by matches, and what profile details are visible? Matching can reveal unexpected family relationships.
Consent and research Is research participation optional? What uses does consent permit? Research consent can allow uses beyond delivering your report.
Retention and deletion How long are the sample, account and results retained? Can each be deleted separately? Deleting an account may not automatically destroy a physical sample or every copy.
Health follow-up Does the service provide a clinician, genetic counselor or only an online report? Professional interpretation is valuable when results could change care.

Review privacy and consent before sending DNA

Genetic information can reveal facts about biological relatives as well as about you. Read the privacy statement, terms of service and consent screens before you register or mail a sample. Look for these specific provisions.

23andMe Health + Ancestry Service DNA Test Kit, with FDA-Authorized Reports
  • REVIEW IMPORTANT TEST INFO: There is a lot to consider with genetic testing. Before purchasing, review important information about Genetic Health Risk* and Carrier Status* reports at 23andme. org/test-info. A portion of your purchase may be eligible for FSA/HSA reimbursement***.
  • UNDERSTAND YOUR GENETIC HEALTH: Get 10+ Condition reports* that show whether you have genetic variants associated with a higher risk of certain conditions. Includes FDA-authorized reports, and you choose whether to view certain reports.
  • PLAN AHEAD WITH 45+ CARRIER STATUS REPORTS*: Discover if you carry a genetic variant for inherited conditions across categories like blood, lung, and hearing health, information you can bring to family planning conversations with your healthcare provider.
  • OPTIMIZE YOUR DAILY WELLNESS: See how your genes may influence lifestyle factors like deep sleep, lactose intolerance, genetic weight, and muscle composition.
  • MAP YOUR ORIGINS ACROSS 5,000+ REGIONS: Explore your Ancestry Composition, trace maternal and paternal haplogroups (paternal requires a Y chromosome), and dig into your Neanderthal Ancestry. Opt in to find up to 1,500 DNA Relatives, and your Family Tree builds itself automatically.

Research participation

Determine whether research consent is optional, what kinds of studies are covered, whether data is identifiable or coded, and whether you can withdraw later. Withdrawal may stop future use without reversing work already completed or data already shared.

Physical-sample storage

Find out whether the laboratory keeps the saliva or DNA after analysis, for how long and for what purposes. Ask whether you can request destruction of the physical sample separately from deleting online results.

Relative matching visibility

Check whether matching is opt-in and what a match can see: display name, estimated relationship, shared segments, family tree or other profile information. Decide whether you want to see matches, be seen by them, both or neither. Unexpected biological relationships are possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sharing with service providers and other parties

Read the categories of companies that may process data, including laboratories, cloud providers, researchers, business partners and authorities. A statement that data is not “sold” may still permit broad sharing under other terms, so read the definitions and exceptions.

Deletion and retention exceptions

Determine whether account deletion, DNA-result deletion and sample destruction are separate requests. Note legal, security, billing, backup or research exceptions, and the time required to complete a request. Save a copy of the policy and your confirmation if deletion matters.

Downloaded or transferred data

If you export results, the receiving service sets its own rules. Check its privacy policy before uploading. Deleting the original account will not necessarily delete copies you downloaded or shared elsewhere.

Use laboratory credentials as one quality check

For a health-oriented test, ask whether the laboratory has credentials relevant to the intended use, such as CLIA certification, CAP accreditation or AABB accreditation. These credentials address laboratory operations; they do not make every interpretation a diagnosis or prove that a marketing claim applies to you.

The Federal Trade Commission has warned that privacy notices can obscure material practices and that claims such as “clinically proven” need methodologically sound studies supporting the consumer-relevant claim. Look for the study population, the measured outcome and whether the evidence concerns the exact report being sold.

What a past enforcement case teaches consumers

In 2023, the FTC alleged that 1Health.io failed to protect genetic and health data, misrepresented deletion and changed its privacy policy retroactively without adequate notice and consent. This was a historical enforcement action involving that company; it is not a finding about every current provider. The practical lesson is to read the live policy, save the version you accepted and verify what deletion actually removes rather than relying on general assurances.

U.S. insurance protections have limits

For U.S. consumers, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) generally protects against use of genetic information by health insurers and employers with 15 or more employees for specified decisions. GINA does not cover life, disability or long-term-care insurance. It also does not mean every use of genetic information is prohibited.

If you may apply for one of those policies, consider the timing and consequences of testing and seek qualified legal or financial advice when the issue is material. Readers outside the United States should check their own protections; the U.S. rules do not automatically apply elsewhere.

23andMe Customer-care material describes distinct ancestry, health and combined service options. All require a saliva collection kit. Its U.S. retailer information identifies Amazon.com as an authorized retailer and says the kit must be used and returned in the country where it was purchased or shipped. Confirm the current kit, included reports, price, FDA status for each health report, matching controls, retention terms and clinical follow-up. Do not assume authorization or privacy terms apply to every offering.
AncestryDNA Relevant for ancestry estimates and DNA-relative matching. Its privacy statement and help material describe data handling and user controls for DNA matching. Verify the current matching settings, sample and result retention, deletion process, optional research consent and any health-related scope before treating it as suitable for a medical question.

Do not compare ancestry percentages from different services as if they were interchangeable measurements unless the providers and methods establish that comparison. A difference in regional estimates may reflect reference populations, algorithms or report updates rather than a simple error.

A practical selection procedure

  1. Write the use case. Choose one primary goal: relatives and ancestry, traits, carrier information or a named health question.
  2. Shortlist reports, not logos. Save the exact product page and report name for each candidate.
  3. Read the scope. List covered variants or conditions, exclusions, reference populations and intended use.
  4. Check oversight. For a health claim, verify whether FDA authorization applies to that exact report and whether the seller’s language matches the authorized use.
  5. Assess evidence. Look for analytical and clinical validity information, study populations and limitations. Treat “clinically proven” as a claim requiring supporting methods, not as a credential.
  6. Audit privacy. Review research consent, sample storage, matching visibility, third-party sharing, retention and deletion exceptions.
  7. Plan interpretation. Decide in advance who will help interpret an unexpected result and whether confirmatory clinical testing is available.
  8. Check legal context. In the United States, remember that GINA does not cover life, disability or long-term-care insurance; elsewhere, consult local rules.
  9. Purchase only after the checks. Confirm current availability, shipping and return-country requirements, and keep the policy and order records.
  10. Use results proportionately. Treat ancestry and traits as informational, and discuss consequential health findings with a qualified professional before acting.

Prepare for results that are surprising or emotionally difficult

Relative matching can uncover an unknown parent, sibling, adoption, donor conception or other family-history fact. Before enabling matching, decide who in your family should be informed and whether you want to receive close-match notifications. Use the service’s visibility controls before results arrive, not after an unexpected match appears.

For health findings, avoid interpreting a single variant without the report’s coverage and limitations. Gather your family history, note symptoms and ask a clinician or genetic counselor what confirmatory test, surveillance or referral is appropriate. Do not share a screenshot or raw-data file publicly; it can expose information about relatives who never consented.

When a DTC service is the wrong tool

  • You need a diagnosis, treatment decision or urgent explanation for symptoms.
  • Your family history suggests a hereditary cancer, cardiac, neurological or other high-consequence condition requiring a comprehensive clinical panel.
  • You need a result for pregnancy care, adoption, immigration, court or another setting with formal chain-of-custody requirements.
  • You cannot accept the provider’s retention, research or matching terms.
  • The report’s intended use, covered variants or regulatory status is unclear.

In these situations, start with a healthcare professional, genetic counselor or accredited clinical laboratory instead of relying on a consumer report.

Bottom line

The best DTC genetic testing service is the one whose exact report matches your question and whose limitations, oversight and data practices you understand. Compare purpose, variant scope, evidence, matching controls, consent, deletion and professional follow-up side by side. Treat health results as one piece of risk information—not a diagnosis—and confirm important findings clinically before making decisions.
