A digital isolator transfers digital information across an electrical isolation barrier without creating a conductive signal path between the two sides. To choose one, first establish the isolation class and operating conditions your end system requires; then match the channel directions, signal performance, supplies, package and output behavior to the circuit. A voltage rating by itself does not establish that a finished product meets its safety requirements.
What a digital isolator does
A digital isolator has a transmitter, an isolation barrier and a receiver. The transmitter encodes or couples an input signal across the barrier; the receiver reconstructs a digital output on the other side. Texas Instruments describes the function as preventing dc and unwanted ac currents between system sections while allowing signals—and, in some systems, power—to transfer. The latter does not mean every digital isolator provides isolated power.

The barrier has no conductive signal path, but the method used to convey information across it varies by device. TI’s Digital Isolator Design Guide, revision G (September 2023) documents two signaling approaches in its families. In its edge-based architecture, input transitions are sent as differential pulses. TI describes a high-frequency channel example spanning 100 kbps to 150 Mbps and a low-frequency path spanning dc to 100 kbps; these are examples for that architecture, not universal category specifications. TI also describes an on-off keying (OOK) approach, in which the input bit stream is modulated across the barrier and recovered by the receiver.
Digital isolators more broadly may use capacitive or transformer coupling; optocouplers instead use light from LEDs, as explained in Analog Devices’ digital-isolator overview. Coupling and signaling choices can affect behavior, integration, size and power. They do not establish a universal winner: compare current datasheets for the actual parts and operating conditions under consideration.

- 2Pcs Magnetic Isolator Board Module Replace Optocouplers ADUM1201 Isolator ADUM1201ARZ SOIC 8 Isolator SPI Interface
- This Module is dual channel digital isolators
- The isolators provide two independent isolation channels in a variety of channel configurations and data rates.
- Both parts operate with the supply voltage on either side ranging from 2.7 V to 5.5 V, providing compatibility with lower voltage systems as well as enabling a voltage translation functionality across the isolation barrier.
- In addition, the provide low pulse-width distortion (< 3 ns for CR grade) and tight channel-to-channel matching (< 3 ns for CR grade).
Start with the isolation and safety requirement
Determine what separation the end product needs before comparing channel count or speed. Functional isolation can help with noise or ground-loop concerns, but it is not equivalent to certified protection against electric shock. Basic and reinforced isolation are different classifications; the applicable one depends on the product’s standards and safety design. TI’s digital isolator portfolio overview distinguishes these categories.
Check the exact device’s certification and the conditions attached to its ratings, including working voltage and transient conditions. Also account for board-level creepage and clearance requirements in the end-product design. A headline withstand-voltage figure alone cannot show that the component, layout and finished system meet a particular safety standard.

Match channels and signal behavior to the circuit
After establishing the isolation requirement, map each signal to a channel and direction. Channel count and direction are device- and package-specific, not automatically configurable. TI’s ISO7761 product information identifies a six-channel family; its ISO7740 product information is an example of the ISO774x quad-channel family. These examples do not establish that the parts are interchangeable: check the exact part number and datasheet for its channel arrangement and ratings.

- Low Power Consumption at just 0.8 mA, the ADUM1201ARZ magnetic isolation board is ideal for low-voltage systems, offering 1/10th the power usage of traditional optical isolators
- Enhanced Performance with higher timing accuracy and better transient common mode rejection, the ADUM1201 ensures robust signal integrity in industrial and medical environments.
- Compact Design saves 40% more PCB space compared to photoelectric isolators, making the ADUM1201ARZ a perfect fit for space-constrained designs in RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 transceiver isolation.
- Bi-Directional Communication with two isolated channels, the ADUM1201ARZ provides minimal crosstalk and is ideal for versatile applications, including SPI and CAN bus transceiver signal isolation.
- Data rate and timing: Check the specified data rate, propagation delay, channel-to-channel skew and pulse-width distortion against the timing budget of the system.
- Transient noise: Review common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) against the expected voltage changes across the barrier.
- Logic and supplies: Confirm the input logic thresholds and the supply range for each side. The two sides may have separate supplies and grounds.
- Output default: Determine the output state during input power loss or signal loss. Do not infer fail-safe behavior from a family name or a similar-looking part number.
- Physical fit: Confirm package, board layout and spacing requirements for the intended isolation design.
Output defaults can differ even within a family. In TI’s ISO774x family, variants without the F suffix default high when input power or signal is lost, while F variants default low. That is family-specific guidance, not a rule for other isolators; verify the exact datasheet and design the system’s response to power and signal loss deliberately.
Account for isolated power separately
A digital isolator’s signal barrier does not necessarily supply energy to the isolated side. If that side needs power, provide a separate isolated supply or select a device that integrates isolated power, then verify that the signal and power paths both preserve the intended isolation. TI’s portfolio includes basic, reinforced and integrated-power isolator options, but the product category alone does not indicate which configuration a particular part provides.

Read vendor portfolio figures at the right scope
TI’s portfolio overview advertises performance up to 5.7 kV, 200 Mbps and 250 kV/µs CMTI. These are vendor portfolio headline figures, not specifications for every device or recommendations for a particular application. Use the chosen part’s current datasheet and certification information, not an overall portfolio maximum, to judge fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn practice, choose the part only after the isolation class, working conditions, channel map, timing, supplies, output default and package all line up with the system. A model or family that meets one prominent figure may still be wrong for the required channel direction, fail-safe state, certification or board layout.
