Choose a chair mat by matching its underside to your floor, then—if you have carpet—checking the carpet-and-pad depth against the mat’s stated range. Finally, size it for the chair’s full rolling area, not just the space beneath the chair when it is parked.
Start with the floor beneath the chair
The mat’s underside must suit the floor. Carpet mats use grippers or cleats to hold their position; hard-floor mats have a smooth underside. Using carpet spikes on wood can damage it, while a smooth-backed mat may not stay put on carpet. ES ROBBINS’ chair-mat guidance describes this distinction.

- Carpet: Choose a mat specifically designed for carpet, with a backing suited to your carpet and pad.
- Hard floors: For hardwood, laminate, tile or vinyl, choose a smooth-backed mat intended for hard floors.
- Polished or high-gloss floors: Check whether the mat needs anti-slip backing. Consult the flooring maker’s care guidance, particularly for polished or treated surfaces, and confirm the mat is stable where you plan to use it.
For carpet, measure through the pad
Carpet pile depth means the distance from the carpet surface through the pad to the subfloor—not just the visible fibers. Deflecto’s Chair Mat Selection Guide suggests using a pile detector or an opened paper clip: push it through the carpet and pad, then measure the portion that entered.
Use that measurement to check the specific mat’s compatibility chart. Deflecto’s guide labels low pile as up to 3/8 inch, medium pile as up to 1/2 inch and high pile as over 1/2 inch. These are that guide’s categories, not universal industry cutoffs. Other sellers use different bands, and allowable pile depth can depend on the mat’s material and backing design. Confirm whether the product’s stated range includes the underlay.

Pile depth is only one consideration. Deflecto also asks buyers to consider how often the chair will be used and the load on the mat. A mat made for short pile may not support deeper carpet as intended; check the product’s stated carpet range rather than assuming any carpet mat will work.
Compare construction and care for the exact model
Chair mats are made from materials including PVC, polypropylene, APET, enhanced polymer and polycarbonate. Material names alone do not tell you whether a particular mat is right for your floor or carpet depth. Compare the model’s approved floor types, carpet range, construction, cleaning directions and warranty.

American Floor Mats says thicker carpet mats tend to bow less and lie flatter, and it groups thickness into its own economy, regular, standard and premium categories. Treat that as seller guidance, not a universal thickness rule. Follow the chosen mat’s floor-and-pile compatibility information rather than selecting by thickness alone.
Size the mat for the chair’s full travel
Measure the area covered by the casters as you pull the chair back, roll forward and move from side to side. The chair should remain on the mat during normal use; if its wheels repeatedly cross the edge, the mat can shift. Deflecto lists rectangular, lipped and workstation shapes. A lip can protect the floor beneath the desk if the chair rolls into that area when pushed in.

Compare the available shape and dimensions with your measured rolling zone. Do not size the mat only to the chair’s footprint at rest.
