Make the storefront where most of your games already live your primary client, or use the Xbox PC app as a library hub if seeing supported games from several stores in one place matters more. Then check each title’s offline support and publisher-client requirements before you commit to that workflow.
The crucial distinction is that a hub can surface a game without replacing the store or publisher service that owns, installs, updates, or authenticates it. Your “default” should therefore be the app that best matches your existing accounts and priorities, not a claim that one launcher can run everything.

What a default game launcher actually does
PC gaming uses several storefronts and publisher services. A launcher may sell games, install them, update them, authenticate your account, provide social features, or simply provide a convenient list of installed shortcuts. Those jobs overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Storefront and client
A storefront client is tied to the account and service where you obtained a game. It normally handles downloading, patching, ownership checks and, sometimes, achievements or cloud saves. If a title requires that client, opening a shortcut from another app does not transfer ownership to the second app.

Library hub
A hub gathers entries from multiple services so you can find and start games from one screen. Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a Windows gaming hub for purchased games and Game Pass, and its September 15, 2025 announcement says supported installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading storefronts can appear in an aggregated library (Microsoft’s Windows 11 PC-gaming overview; Xbox Wire announcement). The aggregation is a view and launch point; it does not replace the original store or publisher client.
Epic makes this boundary explicit: games bought on another platform, such as Steam or Ubisoft Connect, cannot be played through Epic Games Launcher (Epic support). You may see a shortcut in a hub while the original service still performs the actual launch and account check.
Start with your existing library
The fastest way to choose is to count where your games and accounts already are. List the stores you use, the games installed on this PC, and any titles that open a second publisher application. The launcher with the largest share of your regular play should usually be your primary client, because it keeps updates, saves and account prompts in the place you already understand.
Inventory checklist
- Record each game’s purchase or subscription source: a storefront, a publisher account, or a catalog service.
- Note which games are installed and which you expect to install soon.
- Mark games that already open an additional publisher app after you press Play.
- Identify whether you need one combined installed-game view or prefer each store’s native library and settings.
- Separate games you own from games available through a subscription catalog; access to a catalog is not the same as owning a perpetual license.
If nearly all of your games come from one store, opening that store first is usually less complicated than adding a hub. If your installed library is split across services and you mainly want one list, a hub can reduce searching while leaving the underlying clients in place.
Decide which priority matters most
| Your priority | Most suitable starting point | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Most games purchased from one storefront | That storefront’s own client | Whether any individual games require a separate publisher app |
| One view of supported installed games from several stores | Xbox PC app as a hub | Current integrations in Library & Extensions and whether each game still opens its original service |
| Game Pass catalog access | Xbox PC app | Whether the title is currently in the catalog and what account or online connection it requires |
| Offline single-player play | The title’s owning client, after a title-level check | Offline eligibility and which cloud, achievement or multiplayer features disappear |
| Ubisoft games and Ubisoft+ content | Ubisoft Connect PC | Whether another store’s purchase still invokes Ubisoft Connect |
| EA games obtained through Steam | Steam plus the EA app when required | The game’s store page and EA account-linking requirement |
This is a decision framework, not a measured performance ranking. The available product descriptions do not establish that one launcher is faster, more reliable, more private or better at updates than the others.

How the major options fit different workflows
Xbox PC app: a broad library hub
Microsoft presents the Xbox PC app as a central place for purchased games and Game Pass. The 2025 Xbox announcement says it can aggregate supported installed games from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net and other leading storefronts. That makes it a strong candidate when your problem is finding games scattered across several installations.
Aggregation is not migration. The app does not turn a Battle.net or Steam purchase into an Xbox purchase, and it does not prove that Xbox will install, patch or authenticate every game shown. Integration support can change, so open the app’s current Library & Extensions settings and confirm that the stores you use are supported before making it your daily starting point. A game may still open its original client after you select it.
Steam: the sensible default for a Steam-heavy library
If most of your purchases are on Steam, Steam’s own client is the least surprising default: it is already the account that owns those games and the place you normally install and update them. The Xbox aggregation announcement lists Steam among storefronts whose installed games may appear in the Xbox library, but that does not indicate that Xbox replaces Steam’s store or account services. Use the Xbox app only as an optional index if a unified view is more valuable than staying in Steam.
Epic Games Launcher: use it for Epic purchases, with narrow offline support
Epic’s launcher is the direct client for games purchased through Epic. Epic’s support documentation says Offline Mode works only for supported single-player games; multiplayer and services such as cloud saves or achievements may be unavailable offline (Epic Offline Mode guidance). Enable offline use while you are online, then verify the specific game rather than assuming the launcher label guarantees offline play.
Do not select Epic as a universal replacement for other stores. Epic states that a game purchased on another platform, including Steam or Ubisoft Connect, cannot be played through Epic Games Launcher. A hub may show the shortcut, but the original platform remains responsible for the purchase and launch.

EA app: sometimes a required second client
EA says some games bought through Steam require the EA app. In those cases, Steam may begin the process, but the EA app still has to be installed, linked and available for the game to run (EA’s download and play instructions). Check the individual Steam store page and EA account prompts before deciding that Steam alone is sufficient.
EA’s offline guidance is deliberately conditional: offline mode permits games that do not require an internet connection. A game can therefore be installed in the EA app yet still need an online check or service. Test the exact title while signed in and connected, and note what happens after you disconnect.
Ubisoft Connect PC: a publisher-focused client
Ubisoft describes Ubisoft Connect PC as the application for managing and playing Ubisoft games, accessing Ubisoft+ content and redeeming rewards (Ubisoft’s installation guidance). It is appropriate as the first app for a library centered on Ubisoft titles or Ubisoft+, but the description does not make it a general-purpose launcher for games bought elsewhere.
Battle.net: one of the services that may be surfaced by Xbox
The Xbox announcement includes Battle.net among services whose installed games may be displayed in the aggregated Xbox library. That is evidence for a possible unified view, not evidence that Xbox replaces Battle.net’s store, authentication or update process. If Battle.net contains most of your games, keep its client available even when you start games from a hub.
Check offline behavior per game
“Offline mode” is a title-level property, not a guarantee attached to every launcher. Before relying on a game during travel or a connection outage, perform this short check:

- Read the game’s store and publisher support page for offline requirements. Look for language about single-player support, mandatory sign-in, activation limits or online services.
- Install and launch the game once while connected. Complete any first-run authentication, download updates and create a local save if the game requires those steps.
- Use the client’s documented offline setting while still online. Epic’s support page, for example, describes its Offline Mode limitations; EA’s guidance limits offline play to games that do not need an internet connection.
- Disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, then start the game from the same client or shortcut you plan to use later.
- Confirm which features remain: the campaign may work while multiplayer, cloud saves, achievements, social features or license checks do not.
- Reconnect and verify that saves synchronize before playing on another device. A local save made offline may not be uploaded until the client is online again.
Do not infer offline capability from a game being labeled single-player. A launcher can display a game while the title still requires an initial activation or periodic account check.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check publisher-client requirements before choosing a hub
Look for a second application in the game’s system requirements, store description and first launch. EA’s documentation is a concrete example: some Steam games require the EA app. Ubisoft’s documentation likewise identifies Ubisoft Connect as the app used to manage and play Ubisoft games. These dependencies affect startup time, account recovery and offline behavior regardless of which icon you click first.
- Store ownership: Keep the account that bought or licenses the game active. A shortcut in another app does not move that entitlement.
- Installation and updates: Let the owning store or required publisher client handle files and patches unless its documentation says otherwise.
- Authentication: Be ready for a publisher sign-in, account link or one-time activation.
- Overlays and saves: Features may belong to the original client and may not appear when a game is started through a hub.
Set up your chosen default workflow
There is no need to uninstall every other launcher. Treat your choice as the app you open first, while retaining any clients that individual games require.
- Choose the primary client. Select the store that contains most of your games, or select the Xbox PC app if a combined view is your main goal.
- Install required dependencies. Keep Steam, Epic, EA app, Ubisoft Connect or Battle.net installed for games that need them. Sign in to each account before troubleshooting a launch.
- Configure the hub, if using one. In the Xbox PC app, review the current Library & Extensions settings and enable only the integrations you actually use. The list of supported services may change.
- Organize shortcuts deliberately. Pin the primary client to Start or the taskbar, and keep a direct shortcut to a publisher client when a title depends on it. Name shortcuts clearly so you know which account will open.
- Test representative games. Start one game owned by your main store, one launched through a publisher client and one you expect to play offline. Record which app appears and whether saves and updates behave as expected.
- Document account ownership. Store recovery email addresses and two-factor authentication methods securely. A hub cannot recover an entitlement if you lose access to the original account.
Troubleshoot common disappointments
A game appears in the hub but will not start
Open the owning storefront directly and launch the game there. Confirm that the original client is installed, signed in and fully updated. If the direct launch works, the hub entry is functioning as a shortcut but is not replacing the required service. Recheck the hub’s integration settings afterward.
The launcher says you are offline, but the game will not play
Check the game’s own offline requirements. Epic limits Offline Mode to supported single-player games and may disable cloud saves, achievements or multiplayer. EA likewise limits offline mode to titles that do not require an internet connection. Reconnect, complete first-run activation, and test again before relying on the game without a network.
Best Value
A Steam purchase opens another app
This can be expected when the title requires the EA app or another publisher service. Follow the game’s account-linking prompt, keep both clients installed, and launch from whichever sequence the publisher documents. Do not attempt to re-buy the game in a second store to avoid the dependency.
The unified list is incomplete
Aggregation is limited to supported integrations and detected installations. Check the Xbox PC app’s current Library & Extensions settings, verify that the game is installed through its owning client, and use a direct shortcut when a store is not supported. An incomplete hub view does not mean the game license is missing.
Updates appear in different places
Run the client that owns the game when you need to verify patches. A hub can start the title, but the owning store or publisher app may still deliver updates. If a game reports a version mismatch, open that original client, allow it to finish updating, then launch again.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Purchase versus subscription: decide what “default” means to you
Microsoft’s Windows PC-gaming overview presents Game Pass alongside purchased games. A subscription is an access model: the catalog, eligibility and availability can change, and access ends when the subscription or a title’s inclusion ends. An individually purchased game remains tied to its store account under that store’s terms. Choose the Xbox PC app as your default for Game Pass discovery if that catalog is your priority, but keep expectations separate from ownership and from the clients required by games you bought elsewhere.
A practical decision tree
- Do at least three of your regular games come from one store? Make that store’s client your primary starting point.
- Are your installed games split across several supported stores? Try the Xbox PC app as a hub, while retaining each owning client.
- Is offline play your deciding factor? Check every important title’s offline documentation and test it disconnected; choose the client that satisfies those title-level requirements.
- Does a game invoke a publisher app? Treat that app as a required dependency, not an optional alternative.
- Are you deciding between a subscription and purchases? Choose the service that matches whether you want catalog access or long-term ownership, then verify the individual game’s launch and account requirements.
The best default is therefore personal and changeable: use a storefront client when account ownership and dependable updates matter most, or use a hub when reducing library hunting matters most. Revisit the choice when your library, subscriptions or offline needs change, and always let the individual game’s requirements override a launcher-wide assumption.
