Choose a sunscreen labeled broad spectrum and SPF 30 or higher; add water resistance if you expect to swim or sweat heavily. Then pick a formula and finish you can apply generously and reapply outdoors. Sunscreen helps protect skin from UV damage and early aging, but “glow” is a lifestyle aim—not a guaranteed product result.
How do I know if I’m using the right sunscreen?
Start with the label, then consider whether the product suits your skin and routine. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends three checks: broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance when you will be swimming or sweating.

Broad spectrum
Broad spectrum means the sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA contributes to early skin aging, while UVB is associated with sunburn; both are relevant to sun damage. See the AAD guide to sunscreen labels.

SPF primarily measures protection from sunburn, not how long you can safely stay in the sun. The AAD recommends SPF 30 or higher as a practical selection target. Its label explainer says SPF 15 filters 93% of UVB rays and SPF 30 filters 97% under its explanation of SPF; neither figure means the product blocks all UV radiation. The FDA’s consumer guidance gives SPF 15 or higher as its general recommendation, so the agencies’ stated thresholds differ. The FDA explains SPF and sun exposure.
#1 Best Overall
- [ BROAD SPECTRUM SPF 50 ] A micro-fine zinc oxide sunscreen for UVA/UVB protection. This CeraVe face moisturizer with sunscreen is a hydrating facial lotion that spreads easily, is absorbed quickly, and leaves a non-greasy finish
- [ HYALURONIC ACID & NIACINAMIDE ] Anti aging moisturizer contains Hyaluronic Acid to retain skin's moisture and Niacinamide to help calm skin. MVE Technology delivers hydration throughout the day
- [ LIGHTWEIGHT & BLENDABLE ] This daily sunscreen for face has a lightweight formula that blends easily into all skin tones with no white residue
- [ 3 ESSENTIAL CERAMIDES ] Ceramides are found naturally in the skin and make up ~50% of the lipids in the skin barrier. CeraVe's facial moisturizer with sunscreen is formulated with three essential ceramides (1, 3, 6-II) and help restore the skin’s natural barrier
- [ DAILY MOISTURIZER WITH SPF ] Use this daily face sunscreen as the last step in a daytime skincare routine. If layering, apply face lotion with SPF after other product applications have been fully absorbed. Reapply every two hours for protection.
Water resistance for water or sweat
If swimming or heavy sweating is part of your plans, choose a product labeled water resistant. That label indicates 40 or 80 minutes in water, not permanent protection. Follow the product directions and reapply after swimming, sweating or toweling.
Choose a formula you will use consistently
Protection on the label matters, but so does whether the sunscreen feels workable on your skin. A comfortable texture and finish make it easier to apply enough and repeat application when needed. The AAD notes that lotions, sprays, sticks, gels and creams are available; no one format is universally best. Compare products by their protection claims, ingredients, tint and residue, texture, and format for the places you need to cover. The AAD says mineral and other sunscreen types can effectively protect when they meet the core label criteria. Its selection guide offers further guidance.

If you want less white residue or have dark spots
A tinted sunscreen containing iron oxide can help protect against visible light, which can contribute to dark spots, and may reduce white residue. Tint does not guarantee a particular complexion or eliminate discoloration. Check that the tinted product still offers broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and, when needed, water resistance.
If sunscreen stings or burns
When sunscreen stings or burns, the AAD suggests trying a product containing only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and avoiding fragrance. Reactions can have different causes, and a mineral formula is not guaranteed to resolve every reaction. For sensitivity or allergy concerns, use the AAD’s sunscreen selection guidance and seek medical advice if the problem persists.

- Daily Invisible Hydrating Sunscreen with SPF 50 provides long-lasting, 48 hour hydration
- SPF 50 Sunscreen helps protect the skin against harmful UV rays
- Travel size sunscreen to take with you, wherever you go. TSA Friendly
- Oil free face sunscreen with hyaluronic acid keeps your face hydrated with a non-greasy finish
Match the format to the area
Choose a format that lets you cover the skin thoroughly. The AAD identifies a sunscreen stick as an option around the eyes and recommends SPF 30 or higher lip balm for the lips. These are useful targeted options, not substitutes for adequate sunscreen on the rest of the face or exposed skin.
Use sunscreen when you go outdoors, in every season
UV exposure is not limited to hot, sunny days. The AAD says skin is exposed to harmful UV rays whenever you go outside, including on cloudy days and in winter; the FDA also notes that UV exposure occurs year-round. As the AAD put it in application guidance last updated August 15, 2025: “Your skin is exposed to the sun’s harmful UV rays every time you go outside, even on cloudy days and in the winter.” Read its sunscreen application guidance.

The AAD estimates that most adults need about 1 ounce of sunscreen to cover exposed body skin and recommends at least 1 teaspoon for the face. These are practical guidance amounts, not an exact fit for every body size or use. Apply before going outdoors, cover exposed skin—including the face, neck, ears and tops of feet—and follow the product label.
