Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for the closest combination of cyberpunk atmosphere, stealth, augmentations and flexible approaches; choose Starfield for science-fiction character creation, faction play and exploration; choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when an open-world RPG matters more than a science-fiction setting. None is an interchangeable copy of Night City, so decide which part of the experience is non-negotiable before you buy.
CD PROJEKT RED’s official description of Cyberpunk 2077 gives a useful baseline: it is an open-world role-playing game in Night City where choices shape the story, with guns-blazing combat, distance attacks and stealth all presented as possible approaches.

Start with the feature you are trying to replace
“Alternative” is too broad to be useful on its own. Cyberpunk 2077 combines several design goals that do not automatically travel together: a cyberpunk city, role-playing progression, multiple combat approaches, consequential decisions and an open-world structure. A game can match one of those closely while differing sharply on the others.
Use this order of priorities:
- Setting and atmosphere: Do you need a cyberpunk society, or is any science-fiction or speculative world acceptable?
- Approach to encounters: Do you want stealth, direct gunplay, distance attacks, or freedom to change tactics?
- Character building: Is the appeal in selecting abilities, augmentations, backgrounds or traits?
- Narrative agency: Do you want decisions about methods, alliances and trust to shape your route?
- World structure: Is a large open world essential, or would a more focused mission environment work?
Rank those five items from most to least important. The ranking prevents a common mistake: selecting a game because its marketing uses the word “RPG” while overlooking the setting or world structure that made Cyberpunk 2077 appealing in the first place.

What Cyberpunk 2077 establishes as the reference point
The official game page presents Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world RPG set in Night City. It says that player choices shape the story and identifies guns-blazing combat, distance attacks and stealth as available approaches. Those are the comparison points this guide uses; they are not a promise that every alternative offers all of them at the same scale.
| Reference feature | What it means when choosing an alternative |
|---|---|
| Cyberpunk setting | Look for a society shaped by advanced technology, augmentation and social consequences, not merely a futuristic backdrop. |
| Open-world RPG | Check whether the candidate actually describes a broad world to explore, rather than a sequence of contained missions. |
| Several combat approaches | Look for evidence of stealth, direct weapons use, distance attacks or other deliberate ways to solve encounters. |
| Choices shaping the story | Check whether the description promises meaningful decisions about actions, relationships or trust. |
| Build customization | Look for selectable abilities, augmentations, backgrounds or traits that change how your character develops. |
This baseline explains why the three recommendations below are complementary rather than interchangeable. Deus Ex is the strongest thematic and stealth match, Starfield is the strongest science-fiction exploration and character-creation match, and The Witcher 3 is the strongest open-world RPG match if fantasy is acceptable.

Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided for cyberpunk stealth and adaptable builds
Why it is the closest thematic match
The Steam listing for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided describes a 2029 society in which mechanically augmented people are treated as outcasts. That premise gives you the social tension that many players mean when they ask for a cyberpunk alternative: technology is not just scenery; it changes people’s status and the way society treats them.

Those labels line up with a player who wants to observe a situation, select an approach and develop a character around preferred tools instead of treating every encounter as a mandatory firefight.
How its choices map to the reference game
You control covert operative Adam Jensen. The listing says you choose among weapons and augmentations, decide how to approach situations and decide whom to trust. In practical terms, that makes Deus Ex the choice for a player who wants several decisions to remain open at the point of action:
- Stealth-first players can prioritize avoiding direct confrontation rather than treating concealment as a brief optional mode.
- Build-focused players can use augmentations and weapon choices to shape a preferred style.
- Experimenters can reconsider how to handle a situation instead of committing to one universal solution.
- Story-minded players get decisions involving approach and trust, not only combat outcomes.
Where it does not match
The available listing does not establish that Deus Ex offers an open-world city on the broad scale associated with Cyberpunk 2077. That distinction matters. A game can deliver cyberpunk atmosphere and flexible missions without providing the same kind of large urban sandbox, density or free-roaming rhythm.

Choose Deus Ex when your priority order is cyberpunk atmosphere first, stealth and augmentation choices second, and open-world scale third. Do not choose it solely because you want a huge city to cross freely; the cited evidence does not support promising that equivalence.
Who should skip it
Skip Deus Ex if your main reason for seeking an alternative is expansive exploration rather than cyberpunk identity, or if you want a science-fiction character creator and faction journey more than covert operations. Starfield is a better direction for those priorities.
Choose Starfield for science-fiction character creation and exploration
What it preserves
Bethesda Game Studios’ Steam listing for Starfield describes a role-playing game in which you customize your appearance, background and traits, explore space, recruit characters, join factions and pursue quests.
That combination suits players whose favorite Cyberpunk 2077 feature is the ability to define a character and then take that character into a large science-fiction adventure. The setting changes from a dense cyberpunk metropolis to space, so the emotional texture is different, but the desire to create a role and decide where to go remains central.
Why it is not a cyberpunk substitute
Starfield is a science-fiction alternative, not a cyberpunk-city replacement. A general futuristic aesthetic is not the same as a society built around urban technology, augmentation and the specific social conflicts associated with cyberpunk. If you need Night City’s atmosphere or an equivalent city premise, Starfield will miss the target even if its role-playing scope appeals to you.
Match it to your playstyle
- Character creators: Put Starfield first if appearance, background and traits are the first decisions you want to make.
- Explorers: Choose it if discovering space and pursuing quests across a science-fiction setting matters more than staying in one city.
- Faction-oriented players: Its described ability to join factions and recruit characters supports a playstyle built around affiliations and companions.
- Quest-driven RPG players: Choose it when you want a broad role-playing framework rather than a narrowly focused stealth experience.
Starfield is therefore the best answer to “I want a science-fiction RPG where I can define my character and explore,” but not to “I want another cyberpunk city with the same atmosphere.”

Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for open-world RPG structure
What remains familiar
The official Witcher 3 page calls the game an open-world RPG and describes a remastered edition with upgrades to visuals, performance and gameplay. If the part of Cyberpunk 2077 you most want to preserve is the combination of a large world and role-playing progression, The Witcher 3 is the clearest fit of these three alternatives.
The trade-off is fundamental: The Witcher 3 is fantasy. You are not carrying over cyberpunk society, science-fiction technology or Night City’s urban identity. You are carrying over the open-world RPG frame and accepting a different genre.
When the setting change is worthwhile
Choose The Witcher 3 when your ranking looks like this:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open-world RPG structure.
- Story-led role-playing.
- A world with its own atmosphere and characters.
- Science fiction or cyberpunk setting as a lower priority.
This is a useful test because many recommendation requests really mean “I want another substantial open-world RPG,” even when the original example happens to be science fiction. If that is your request, fantasy should not disqualify The Witcher 3.
Edition and platform caution
The official page discusses a remastered edition and its upgrades, but the information provided here does not establish every current platform, regional store listing or edition difference. Confirm the edition and platform you intend to use before purchasing. A remastered label alone does not tell you whether a particular storefront or device includes that version.
Use a five-axis decision test
When two candidates still look plausible, score them against the five features that define the choice. Give each feature a weight from 1 to 5, then give each game a fit score from 1 to 5. Multiplication is optional; the purpose is to expose which compromise you are actually making.

| Axis | Question to ask yourself | Deus Ex: Mankind Divided | Starfield | The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Setting and atmosphere | Must the world itself feel cyberpunk? | Strongest match in this group | Science fiction, not cyberpunk city | Fantasy |
| Combat and approach | Do I want stealth and multiple ways to handle situations? | Strong match according to its listing | Not the reason to select it from the supplied descriptions | Not the reason to select it from the supplied descriptions |
| Character and build customization | Do I want to define abilities, equipment or identity? | Weapons and augmentations | Appearance, background and traits | Not established in the cited page details |
| Narrative choice | Do decisions about approach, trust or factions matter? | Approach and trust decisions | Factions and quests are part of the described RPG frame | Choose it for the broader story-led RPG experience |
| World structure and exploration | Is a broad world essential? | Open-world equivalence is not established | Space exploration is central to the listing | Officially described as an open-world RPG |
Do not average the scores if one requirement is absolute. For example, if you will not play fantasy, The Witcher 3 should be removed before scoring. If cyberpunk atmosphere is mandatory, Starfield should not win merely because it scores well on exploration.
Match common player profiles to a game
“I want cyberpunk stealth and choices.”
Start with Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Its cited description directly combines cyberpunk, stealth and role-playing, then adds weapons, augmentations, approaches and trust decisions. The explicit limitation is world scale: treat it as a close thematic and systems match, not as a guaranteed equivalent to Night City’s open-world breadth.
“I want to create a character and explore science fiction.”
Start with Starfield. Appearance, background and traits address the character-creation requirement, while space exploration, recruited characters, factions and quests address the broader adventure. Accept that the cyberpunk-city atmosphere is not part of the match.
“I want another big open-world RPG, and fantasy is fine.”
Start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Its official description explicitly uses the open-world RPG category, and the remastered edition adds visual, performance and gameplay upgrades. The choice is about structure and role-playing, not genre continuity.
“I want a good story, FPS mechanics, RPG elements and an open world.”
A public recommendation discussion used that wording as one player’s request: “I want a good story, FPS mechanics, RPG elements, and an open world.” Treat it as an example of literal query language, not as a survey result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Break the request into tests instead of searching for a one-to-one clone. “Good story” maps to the narrative-choice axis; “RPG elements” maps to character development and decisions; “open world” must be verified independently; and “FPS mechanics” requires checking the exact platform listing and controls for the edition you plan to play. From the three candidates here, The Witcher 3 is the clearest open-world RPG fit, Deus Ex is the clearest cyberpunk and stealth fit, and Starfield is the clearest science-fiction exploration and character-creation fit.

Understand the biggest trade-offs before deciding
Atmosphere versus scale
Deus Ex gives up an established open-world equivalence in order to stay closest to cyberpunk themes, augmentations and covert play. The Witcher 3 gives up science fiction in order to preserve the open-world RPG structure. Starfield gives up cyberpunk-city identity in order to emphasize science-fiction exploration and character creation.
Focused approach versus broad exploration
A game described around stealth, weapons, augmentations and situational decisions may reward careful handling of individual encounters. A game described around space exploration, factions and quests answers a different desire: the feeling of building a life and route across a larger science-fiction setting. Do not judge one by the other’s strengths.
Customization versus narrative framing
Starfield’s listing is explicit about appearance, background and traits. Deus Ex’s listing is explicit about weapons and augmentations. Those are different kinds of customization: one begins with identity and role definition, while the other emphasizes how a covert operative handles situations. Choose the form of authorship you want, not simply the game with the longer feature list.

Check availability, edition and platform before purchase
Store information changes, and an apparently suitable recommendation can fail at checkout or installation if the edition or platform is wrong. Perform these checks for whichever candidate you select:
- Open the official or storefront listing for your region. Confirm that the game is sold where you live rather than relying on an old search result.
- Identify the exact edition. For The Witcher 3, distinguish the remastered edition described on the official page from other listings. For every game, read the edition name shown at checkout.
- Confirm platform compatibility. Check the device or operating system listed for your purchase. A title’s existence on one platform does not establish availability on another.
- Verify language and access requirements. Store pages can differ by region in language support, account requirements or online services.
- Read the current product description again. Features, bundles and edition contents can change, so use the live listing immediately before buying.
These checks are especially important because the cited pages establish each game’s identity and editorial fit, not a permanent catalogue of every region, format or platform.
A practical choice in three minutes
- Write one non-negotiable. Examples: “must feel cyberpunk,” “must support space exploration,” or “must be an open-world RPG.”
- Eliminate conflicts. Remove any game that fails that non-negotiable, even if it has attractive secondary features.
- Pick your preferred compromise. Deus Ex trades broad-world certainty for cyberpunk stealth and augmentation choices; Starfield trades cyberpunk atmosphere for science-fiction character creation and exploration; The Witcher 3 trades science fiction for an open-world RPG framework.
- Confirm the current edition and platform. Use the live listing before you spend money.
- Set expectations before launching. Go in expecting an adjacent fit, not a duplicate of Cyberpunk 2077.
Final recommendation by priority
Choose Deus Ex: Mankind Divided when the words “cyberpunk,” “stealth,” “augmentations” and “different approaches” are the heart of your request. Its 2029 augmented-outcast premise and Adam Jensen’s weapon, augmentation, approach and trust decisions make it the closest match on those axes.
Choose Starfield when the heart of your request is “let me create a science-fiction character and explore.” Its described customization, space exploration, recruitable characters, factions and quests fit that goal, but it should not be presented as a cyberpunk-city substitute.
Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt when “open-world RPG” matters more than genre continuity. Its official page supports the open-world RPG description and identifies a remastered edition with visual, performance and gameplay upgrades; the setting is fantasy, so the trade is explicit.
There is no single winner because each recommendation preserves a different part of Cyberpunk 2077. Decide which feature you refuse to lose, then select the game whose documented strengths serve that priority and verify its current edition and platform.
