To check whether a crypto exchange can serve you in Germany under MiCA, identify the legal entity that will sign your customer agreement, find that entity in the official registers, and verify that its authorisation covers the service you plan to use. A familiar brand name—or a licence held by another company in the same group—is not enough.
The EU-wide MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026. Providers serving EU clients after that date must have MiCA authorisation or another eligible status under the regulation; an application still pending or permission under an earlier national regime is not the same as MiCA authorisation.

How to verify an exchange’s MiCA status
- Identify the contracting company. Check the customer agreement, account-opening disclosures and legal notices for the full legal name of the entity that will provide your service. The consumer-facing brand may use different companies in different countries. MiCA protections apply to the specific authorised EU entity, not automatically to every company in its group or a non-EU company using the same brand. ESMA explains the entity-specific scope of protections.
- Search ESMA’s Interim MiCA Register. Use the legal name rather than relying on a brand-name search. ESMA describes the register as a central record of authorised crypto-asset service providers and non-compliant entities, populated with information from national competent authorities and the European Banking Authority. Start at the ESMA Interim MiCA Register.
- Cross-check German records. BaFin says German authorisations are listed in the Federal Gazette, its company database and the ESMA register. Consult BaFin’s crypto-asset services information and its company database.
- Match the authorised service to what you intend to do. Look for the relevant activity—such as operating a trading platform, exchanging crypto-assets or custody—rather than treating an entry as blanket permission for every service. MiCA Article 59 states that authorisation specifies the services a provider may offer. Read Article 59 in ESMA’s Interactive Single Rulebook.
- Confirm it can serve German residents through that entity. A provider authorised in another EU Member State may provide services elsewhere in the EU after the required cross-border notification. Check that the notification and Germany availability apply to the provider you identified, and that your contract is with that listed entity. BaFin’s MiCA information and MiCA Article 59 explain the framework.
- Resolve discrepancies before moving money or crypto. If the contract, website, country or service does not match the register entry, pause and ask the provider to explain in writing. Verify the answer with the relevant regulator before depositing or transferring assets. ESMA’s June 2026 consumer statement urges clients to check the register and act if their provider is unauthorised.
What MiCA authorisation tells you—and what it does not
MiCA establishes an authorisation framework for covered crypto-asset services. ESMA’s consumer factsheet says authorised providers must meet requirements concerning governance, capital, conduct and consumer protection. An authorisation helps establish whether a particular entity is permitted to provide particular services; it does not promise investment returns or guarantee against insolvency, cyber incidents or losses.

MiCA’s scope is not identical for all crypto-related assets and services. The joint European Supervisory Authorities factsheet describes exclusions and separately regulated categories, including certain financial instruments and genuinely unique non-fungible assets. Check what rules apply to the specific asset or service rather than inferring coverage from the exchange’s MiCA entry.

How the 1 July 2026 transition deadline affects your check
Some older guidance describes providers operating under national rules while they applied for MiCA authorisation. That transitional period has ended across the EU. In its 17 April 2026 statement, ESMA said the transition expired on 1 July 2026 and providers serving EU clients without a MiCA licence after that date must cease those services. ESMA’s later consumer statement says clients of unauthorised providers do not benefit from MiCA safeguards, including client-asset protections.
Accordingly, do not treat a pending application, former national-law status or an authorisation held by another group company as proof that the entity serving you is MiCA-authorised for your chosen service. Verify the exact legal entity and service in the register.

How to compare providers after the authorisation check
Authorisation is a threshold check, not a recommendation. Once you have a shortlist whose entities and service scopes you have verified, compare the terms that affect your use:

- The exact authorised entity and the services its entry covers.
- Whether German residents can open an account through that entity.
- Total trading costs and fees for deposits and withdrawals.
- Supported crypto-assets and trading pairs.
- Euro deposit and withdrawal options and processing times.
- How custody and security work, including arrangements for transferring assets.
- Complaint procedures and customer support.
These details are provider-specific and can change. Read the current fee schedule, service terms and custody information for the legal entity in your contract; regulatory register status alone does not establish a provider’s fees, listings, payment methods or service quality.
