A secured card requires a cash deposit, but it is still a credit card: you must repay what you charge. A card can help build positive history only when the issuer reports your payment activity and you pay on time.
Start with the right kind of card
Secured credit cards
A secured card is backed by a cash deposit. The issuer may use the deposit to determine your credit limit, but the exact relationship depends on the card’s terms. The deposit is not a payment toward future purchases, and it does not remove your obligation to repay the balance. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) gives $500 as an example deposit amount; it is not a recommended or universal minimum. Read the issuer’s disclosure to find out how much is required, how the limit is set, and when the deposit may be returned.

A secured card may be a practical starting point when your credit file is limited or damaged. Its potential credit-building value comes from repayment activity reported to nationwide credit reporting companies—not from the deposit itself. The CFPB explains that a secured card can help start or rebuild credit when payments are reported: What are some ways to start or rebuild a good credit history?
Unsecured entry-level cards
Some applicants may be able to get an unsecured card without a deposit. Approval, credit limit, and APR depend on the applicant and issuer; no card is guaranteed. Compare an offer’s actual pricing and terms against a secured alternative rather than assuming that avoiding a deposit makes it cheaper.

Store and prepaid cards
A store card may have a relatively low limit, but a low limit alone does not make it inexpensive. Check its rates, fees, and any restrictions on where it can be used. A prepaid card can help you control spending because you use money you have loaded onto it, but generally does not build credit history: it does not create the same borrowing-and-repayment record reported to credit bureaus. Debit cards and cash likewise typically do not establish that record.
Credit-builder loans are a different option
If you are open to a loan rather than a card, the CFPB describes credit-builder loans as products where funds are held in savings while you make payments, with the funds released at the end of the term. Compare the loan’s costs and terms separately; it is not a credit card.

Compare the terms that determine cost and usefulness
Federal law requires important rate and fee information to be disclosed before you apply. Use each issuer’s current pricing disclosure and card agreement; comparison-site summaries may not include every term. The FDIC’s credit-card guidance identifies the main costs and features to check.

| What to compare | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit and available credit | Deposit amount, whether it sets the credit limit, and the issuer’s rules for returning it | The deposit ties up your money; the limit affects how much you can charge. |
| APR | Purchase APR, balance-transfer APR, cash-advance APR, any introductory rate, and the rate after a promotional period | If you carry a balance, the purchase APR and fees can outweigh rewards. |
| Fees | Annual, balance-transfer, cash-advance, foreign-transaction, late-payment, and returned-payment fees | Fees can make a card costly even when its limit is small. |
| Penalty terms | What can trigger a penalty APR, how high it can be, and how long it can last | A missed or late payment may have consequences beyond a late fee. |
| Credit reporting | Which nationwide credit reporting companies receive account and payment information, and how often the issuer reports | Reported on-time payments can help establish positive history; reporting practices vary. |
| Payment terms | Due date, grace-period terms, and how payments are credited | These details affect your ability to avoid late fees and interest. |
| Rewards and benefits | Eligibility rules, spending conditions, and whether the benefits justify any fee | Rewards do not compensate for borrowing costs if you carry a balance. |
| Account review or upgrade | Whether the issuer reviews accounts for a possible unsecured product, and what happens to the deposit | A review or upgrade is not guaranteed; rely on written issuer terms, not an assumption. |
The CFPB’s guide to credit-card terms also recommends checking penalty APR triggers and duration. For a balance transfer, compare the transfer fee and the rate that applies after any promotional period, not just the introductory offer.

Look beyond the first comparison-site result
Compare offers from more than one lender, including banks and credit unions, and verify details on the issuer’s own website. The FDIC cautions that some comparison sites show only companies that pay to advertise there, so a listing is not an independent endorsement.
There may be a reason to include smaller institutions in your comparison, but the published figures are market-level findings—not a prediction about an individual card. In its 2024 analysis of first-half 2023 card data, the CFPB Office of Markets found that smaller banks and credit unions tended to offer lower purchase APRs than the 25 largest issuers across credit-score tiers. It estimated $400 to $500 in average annual savings for a consumer with an average $5,000 balance using a small-bank or credit-union card; the estimate depends on that balance and comparison and is not a promise of savings for a particular applicant. The same report found annual fees on 27% of large-issuer card products versus 9.5% of small-firm products in its dataset. These figures describe the report’s sample, not every card in either category. See the CFPB’s analysis of the credit-card market.

Choose a payment plan you can sustain
- Set a manageable budget. Consider the deposit you can afford to tie up and a monthly charge you could repay from your regular budget.
- Use the card for planned purchases. Do not treat the available limit as extra income. Keep charges within an amount you can pay.
- Pay on time, every time. Set a reminder or use automatic payments if appropriate, and confirm that the payment reaches the issuer by the due date. The CFPB puts it plainly: “Paying on time, every time, can help you build a strong credit history and lower your costs for borrowing money in the future.”
- Pay the statement balance when possible. Paying it in full can help you avoid interest when the account’s grace-period terms apply. Paying only the minimum can make borrowing substantially more expensive over time.
- Check your account and credit reports. Confirm payments are recorded as expected and look for errors. The FDIC’s February 2026 guidance says you do not need to pay or subscribe to obtain free annual credit reports; apply for credit only when needed, since numerous applications may be reported and may lower a score. See the FDIC’s February 2026 credit-card guidance.
Understand what protections and outcomes are not guaranteed
Federal protections described by the FDIC include advance notice for certain significant changes to card terms and restrictions on over-limit fees unless you opt in. The FDIC also says losses from unauthorized use of a lost or stolen card may be limited if you notify the issuer promptly. Contact the issuer immediately if your card is lost or stolen, and consult your agreement and applicable law for the details that apply to your account.
