How to choose a compact tablet for reading, gaming, and travel (2026 guide)

There is no single best compact tablet for every reader. Start with the games you intend to play, then weigh screen comfort, physical weight, storage, battery evidence, operating system and local availability. The light Apple iPad mini is aimed at people who value portability and the iPadOS ecosystem; Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 and Lenovo Tab One cover everyday reading, video and casual games; Lenovo Legion Tab models and the REDMAGIC Astra 2 target demanding games, emulation and remote play.

Prices, stock, warranty terms and cellular availability change by country and seller. Confirm those details immediately before buying, and verify the exact storage, generation and accessories in the listing.

Choose by workload before comparing specifications

Compact tablets usually sit between a phone and a full-size tablet. Their 8-to-9-inch screens are easier to carry than a 10-to-13-inch model, but the smaller body leaves less room for a large battery, cooling hardware and a comfortable game-control layout. Decide which of these three jobs describes you most closely.

Mostly books, articles and commuting

Prioritize a low published weight, text that remains sharp at your preferred scaling, enough local storage for downloaded books, and a body you can hold in one hand. The iPad mini’s 293g Wi‑Fi weight is notably light among the models listed here, although that figure excludes a case and says nothing about whether iPadOS fits your library, cloud-storage and family-sharing habits. A lighter Android model may be preferable if you rely on expandable storage or Android apps.

Reading, video, web use and casual games

Entry-level compact Android tablets such as Galaxy Tab A9 and Lenovo Tab One are designed for everyday tasks rather than sustained high-end gaming. Their processors, displays and memory configurations are a different class from the Legion gaming tablets and Astra 2. Compare current local prices instead of assuming one is cheaper; the cited material does not establish present pricing.

Demanding games, emulation or remote play

Look first at processor class, RAM, sustained cooling and controller fit. The Legion Tab Gen 3, the newer Legion Tab (8.8-inch, 5), and REDMAGIC Astra 2 have the performance-oriented specifications described by their manufacturers or by Tom’s Guide. A 165Hz or 240Hz panel is only the screen’s capability: a game must render at a matching frame rate, and some titles are capped lower.

An existing Apple or Android ecosystem

Check that the games you own, saved data, subscriptions, family-sharing arrangements and accessories work on the operating system you are choosing. The available sources identify the platforms but do not establish a universal winner for software support or update longevity, so verify the current policy and compatibility for your region.

What “compact” means in real use

Screen diagonal does not tell you how easy a tablet is to carry. Compare the published body dimensions and weight, then add the case, glass protector and any controller you will actually use. A 320g tablet in a rugged folio can feel heavier during a long train journey than a bare 360g gaming tablet held with two hands. None of the cited sources provides a controlled, cross-model reading-comfort test, so treat hand comfort as a personal check rather than a specification.

Weight also changes the best holding position. A sub-300g tablet can be supported in one hand for short reading sessions, while an 8.8- or 9.06-inch gaming tablet is more comfortable braced against your lap or held with both hands. If you read in bed or on a standing commute, visit a shop with your usual case or use a return policy that allows a grip test.

Reading: evaluate the screen, not just its size

Resolution and text sharpness

Higher pixel counts make small type and comic line work cleaner, but operating-system scaling and app typography matter just as much. The Legion Tab Gen 3 is listed with an 8.8-inch 2.5K LTPS display; the newer Legion Tab (8.8-inch, 5) is listed by Lenovo PSREF with an 8.8-inch 3K IPS LCD. The iPad mini uses an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display. Galaxy Tab A9 and Lenovo Tab One are both 8.7-inch devices, but the Tab One source specifically describes an HD IPS panel. These are not equivalent reading experiences, so view a page of your own books at the font size you use.

Aspect ratio and page shape

A squarer screen can show more of a two-page spread, while a taller 16:10 layout leaves useful space for video and remote-play controls. Tom’s Guide called the Legion Tab Gen 3’s 16:10 screen useful for remote gaming. That observation does not predict how every ebook, manga app or game will letterbox; check the apps you use.

Brightness, glare and sustained comfort

The cited specifications do not provide comparable brightness or glare measurements across all six models. Look for a matte or low-reflection surface, test text under your normal indoor and outdoor lighting, and make sure automatic brightness does not pulse distractingly. A high refresh rate can make scrolling feel smoother, but it does not by itself make text easier to read or prove a panel is brighter.

Gaming: match hardware to the games you actually play

Casual and cloud games

Turn-based games, puzzle titles, streaming services and older 3D games place less demand on sustained cooling. Galaxy Tab A9’s LCD is specified up to 60Hz, and Lenovo positions Tab One’s Helio G85 with 4GB RAM for everyday tasks, reading, browsing and light gaming. These tablets can be sensible travel companions when low purchase cost and expandable storage matter more than peak frame rate, but check each game’s current Android requirements.

High-end native games and emulation

The Legion Tab Gen 3 combines a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 12GB RAM, an 8.8-inch 2.5K 165Hz LTPS display and vapor-chamber cooling, according to Lenovo’s compact-tablet page. Tom’s Guide’s tested unit had 256GB storage, a 6,550mAh battery and Wi‑Fi 7. Lenovo’s newer Legion Tab (8.8-inch, 5) is listed with an 8.8-inch 3K 165Hz IPS LCD and a typical 9,000mAh battery; its PSREF announcement date is March 11, 2026, and Lenovo warns specifications can change.

Tom’s Guide lists REDMAGIC Astra 2 with a 9.06-inch OLED panel at 2400 × 1504, a 0.8-pound weight and a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. The roundup positions it as a premium gaming tablet and notes high refresh, dual USB‑C ports and software tradeoffs. Those are the publication’s descriptions, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee that every game reaches the panel’s maximum refresh rate.

Touchscreen versus physical controls

For competitive or emulated games, decide whether you will use touch controls, a Bluetooth pad or a telescopic controller. Tom’s Guide reported that its Legion Tab Gen 3 worked with a Razer Kishi Ultra and discussed screen aspect ratio and case fit in remote-play use. That is a hands-on observation of a particular device and controller revision; verify compatibility with the exact tablet, case and controller before ordering.

Travel: battery, storage and connectivity

Battery capacity is not runtime

Samsung specifies a 5,100mAh battery for Galaxy Tab A9 and cautions that actual life varies with network, usage and other factors. Lenovo lists a typical 9,000mAh battery for the 2026 Legion Tab (8.8-inch, 5). Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours 40 minutes from its Legion Tab Gen 3 review unit under that publication’s battery-lab procedure. Lenovo UK describes Tab One as offering “up to 5.5 Hours Battery Life”; that is Lenovo’s claim, not an independently measured result. Do not rank these figures as if milliamp-hours or one lab test were directly comparable hours of reading.

Offline storage

Download your books, maps and games before leaving a reliable connection. Galaxy Tab A9 supports microSD cards up to 1TB according to Samsung’s 2023 announcement. Tom’s Guide’s Legion Tab Gen 3 unit had 256GB internal storage. Apple’s cited iPad mini specification confirms the display, chip and Wi‑Fi weight but the supplied material does not list a microSD slot; choose the internal-storage tier carefully because you cannot assume expansion. Storage tiers for the other models vary by region and should be confirmed in the sales listing.

Wi‑Fi and cellular

Galaxy Tab A9 is specified at 332g for Wi‑Fi and 333g for LTE, giving travelers a cellular option in supported markets. The iPad mini figure cited is for the Wi‑Fi model. Confirm whether a listing is Wi‑Fi-only, LTE or another cellular configuration, and check band compatibility with your carrier. The Legion Tab Gen 3 review unit included Wi‑Fi 7; that does not make cellular connectivity available.

Charging and in-box protection

Tom’s Guide says its Legion Tab Gen 3 package included a 68W charger, cable, glass screen protector and folio case. Package contents can differ by market and seller, so inspect the exact listing rather than budgeting for accessories that may already be included. A folio and protector are practical for travel when they are absent. A stylus is a secondary purchase for annotation or notes, not a requirement for reading or gaming.

How the shortlisted models fit different buyers

Apple iPad mini: lightest published Wi‑Fi weight

Apple’s current technical specifications list an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, an A17 Pro chip and a 293g Wi‑Fi model. That combination makes it attractive for readers who carry a tablet daily and already use iPadOS apps, cloud saves or accessories. The specification is for the bare Wi‑Fi tablet, not a cased travel setup. Before choosing it, check the storage tier, cellular requirement and whether your preferred games and reading apps support Apple’s platform.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A9: expandable everyday Android use

Samsung’s 2023 announcement lists an 8.7-inch LCD up to 60Hz, 332g for Wi‑Fi, 333g for LTE, a 5,100mAh battery and microSD support up to 1TB. It suits a reader who wants Android, local expansion and a cellular variant where offered. Samsung said the series would start shipping October 23, 2023 in select markets; that historical launch statement is not proof of stock in 2026. Verify current availability, software support and the exact regional model.

Lenovo Tab One: basic reading and light games

Lenovo UK describes Tab One as an 8.7-inch HD IPS tablet around 320g, with a Helio G85 and 4GB RAM. The page targets everyday tasks, reading, browsing and light gaming and lists “up to 5.5 Hours Battery Life.” Treat that runtime as a manufacturer claim. It is not a replacement for a gaming-focused tablet when you need high frame rates, advanced emulation or sustained performance.

Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3: established compact gaming configuration

Lenovo’s page lists an 8.8-inch 2.5K 165Hz LTPS display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 12GB RAM, vapor-chamber cooling, dual USB‑C ports and Dolby Atmos speakers. Tom’s Guide’s hands-on unit had 6,550mAh, 256GB, Wi‑Fi 7 and achieved 15 hours 40 minutes in that reviewer’s battery test. The same review says the box contained a 68W charger, cable, glass protector and folio case, while the reviewer purchased a Lenovo Tab Pen Plus separately. Check the sold bundle and regional configuration.

Lenovo Legion Tab (8.8-inch, 5): newer specification to verify

Lenovo PSREF records a March 11, 2026 announcement, an 8.8-inch 3K 165Hz IPS LCD, a typical 9,000mAh battery and approximately 360g. Lenovo warns that specifications may change. Treat it as a candidate for high-performance gaming, but confirm that the exact generation has reached your market, that the charger and storage match your needs, and that warranty service is available locally.

REDMAGIC Astra 2: large compact gaming screen

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup lists a 9.06-inch OLED at 2400 × 1504, 0.8 pound and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It highlights high refresh, dual USB‑C and software tradeoffs. The larger panel may help game controls and remote play while making one-handed reading less convenient. The cited roundup does not establish battery capacity, storage tiers, current price or stock, so verify those before treating it as a travel purchase.

A step-by-step buying process

  1. Write down your heaviest game. If it is a simple 2D or cloud title, an everyday tablet may suffice. If it involves demanding 3D graphics, emulation or remote play, begin with the Legion or Astra 2 class.
  2. Set a carry-weight limit. Compare bare tablet weights, then add your case, protector and controller. Remember that the iPad mini’s 293g and Galaxy Tab A9’s 332g/333g figures are configuration-specific.
  3. Read on the exact screen. Check font scaling, page margins, glare and your preferred orientation. Do not infer comfort from diagonal size alone.
  4. Check processor, RAM and cooling together. Snapdragon 8-series hardware and vapor-chamber cooling target sustained gaming; 4GB Helio G85 hardware is positioned for lighter use. A high refresh rate cannot compensate for a weak processor or a game’s frame-rate cap.
  5. Choose storage for offline use. Count downloaded books, maps, game installs and video. Use the Galaxy Tab A9’s microSD support if your workflow benefits from expansion; select sufficient internal storage on models without a confirmed card slot.
  6. Evaluate battery evidence honestly. Separate manufacturer capacity or “up to” claims from an independent test. The 15-hour-40-minute Legion result belongs to Tom’s Guide’s procedure and unit, not every Legion configuration.
  7. Select Wi‑Fi or cellular. A cellular model can avoid hotspot use during travel, but check carrier bands, SIM or eSIM requirements and the weight difference.
  8. Check the operating-system ecosystem. Verify game availability, saved-data transfer, subscriptions, parental controls, family sharing and accessory support before leaving your current platform.
  9. Confirm the exact regional listing. Match generation, processor, RAM, storage, charger, keyboard or folio bundle, warranty and return terms. This is especially important for the 2026 Legion Tab and for packages reviewed in another country.

Software support and ownership checks

The cited material does not provide complete update timelines, current software versions or a comprehensive game-compatibility matrix. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the current operating-system version, security-update policy and warranty process in your country. A powerful tablet that loses access to a required game, controller or streaming app can be a poor travel device even if its benchmark hardware is excellent.

For reading, check DRM and library-app support, font controls, offline licensing and whether your notes synchronize. For gaming, verify controller mappings, cloud-save behavior and whether a title supports the tablet’s aspect ratio. These checks are more reliable than assuming that two devices with the same Android label behave identically.

Accessories that improve a compact tablet

  • Folio case: protects the screen and provides a stand for flights or hotel rooms. The Tom’s Guide Legion Tab Gen 3 package included one, but other markets may not.
  • Screen protector: useful in a travel bag and included with the reviewed Legion package. Confirm fit for the exact generation before buying separately.
  • Controller: a telescopic pad can make remote play and emulation more comfortable. The Kishi Ultra compatibility observation applies to Tom’s Guide’s Legion Tab Gen 3 unit and should not be generalized to every tablet or controller revision.
  • Stylus: worthwhile only if annotation or handwritten notes are part of the plan. Tom’s Guide says its reviewer bought a Lenovo Tab Pen Plus separately for the Legion Tab Gen 3.
  • Charger and cable: check wattage and included regional plug. The reviewed Legion Gen 3 bundle contained a 68W charger; do not assume another seller’s box does.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Choosing by screen size alone: a 9-inch panel can be less comfortable in one hand than an 8.3-inch model once the case is attached.
  • Treating refresh rate as frame rate: 165Hz or 240Hz describes panel capability, not guaranteed game output.
  • Comparing milliamp-hours as hours: screen brightness, processor load, radios and software determine runtime. Use comparable independent tests where available.
  • Assuming launch news means current stock: Samsung’s October 23, 2023 availability statement and Lenovo’s March 11, 2026 PSREF announcement are historical or database dates, not a live inventory check.
  • Ignoring storage expansion: confirm microSD support and maximum card size; Galaxy Tab A9’s cited limit is up to 1TB.
  • Forgetting the case-controller combination: a controller that fits a bare tablet may not fit with a folio or glass protector.
  • Buying an imported configuration without support: check cellular bands, charger plug, warranty coverage, language options and return shipping.
  • Assuming every package matches a review: accessories and storage can vary by market and seller.

Final pre-purchase checklist

  • Heaviest game and required operating system confirmed.
  • Published weight checked with your intended case and controller added.
  • Text size, aspect ratio, brightness and glare tested or covered by a practical return policy.
  • Processor, RAM, cooling and refresh rate matched to the games you play.
  • Offline storage calculated; microSD support verified where needed.
  • Battery figure identified as capacity, manufacturer estimate or independent test.
  • Wi‑Fi or cellular model, carrier compatibility and travel connectivity confirmed.
  • Current local price, stock, warranty and software-support terms checked.
  • Exact generation, storage tier, charger and in-box accessories verified.

Bottom line

Choose the iPad mini when minimum carry weight and the iPadOS ecosystem matter most. Choose Galaxy Tab A9 or Lenovo Tab One for straightforward Android reading, video and casual games, with Galaxy’s microSD and cellular options where supported. Choose a Legion Tab or REDMAGIC Astra 2 when demanding games, emulation or remote play justify a faster processor, high-refresh display and better cooling. No published specification replaces a check of your own reading posture, game library, regional price and the exact bundle you will receive.
