The right commodity exchange-traded product is the one whose legal structure, underlying instruments, futures-roll method, total trading cost, liquidity and tax reporting fit your objective and account. Start with the current prospectus and filings—not the word “ETF” in a fund’s name. In the United States, that label is often used loosely for commodity trusts, commodity pools and exchange-traded notes that are not registered open-end ETFs or unit investment trusts.
What you are actually buying
A commodity product can give you exposure to prices without giving you ownership of barrels, bars, bushels or other physical inventory. It may hold futures contracts, options, swaps, foreign-exchange instruments, physical commodities, or a combination. A note may instead be an unsecured debt obligation of its issuer. The product’s objective and permitted investments determine the economic exposure; the ticker and marketing description do not.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov explanation of exchange-traded funds covers registered open-end investment companies and unit investment trusts. It expressly does not cover exchange-traded commodity trusts and exchange-traded notes. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes many commodity exchange-traded products as commodity pools. Consequently, two products that appear to be “commodity ETFs” can give investors very different legal rights, expenses, tax forms and risks.

Use the prospectus to identify the wrapper
| Structure | What the investor generally has | Questions to answer in the filings |
|---|---|---|
| Registered open-end ETF or unit investment trust | An interest in a registered investment vehicle, subject to its stated portfolio and redemption framework. | What is the investment objective? Which instruments are allowed? What are the operating expenses, holdings, NAV procedures and redemption terms? |
| Commodity trust or commodity pool | An interest in a vehicle that may trade futures, options, swaps, foreign exchange or hold physical assets. | Who is the operator or sponsor? Which markets and instruments may it use? What collateral, counterparties, leverage and strategy changes are permitted? |
| Exchange-traded note | A debt claim on the issuing institution tied to a reference index or strategy, rather than a direct ownership interest in a portfolio. | What is the issuer’s credit risk? Is principal protected? How is the index calculated, and what happens if the note is accelerated, suspended or delisted? |
| Physical-commodity vehicle | Exposure backed partly or wholly by stored commodity holdings, subject to custody, insurance and valuation arrangements. | What is actually held, where is it stored, who audits it, and how do storage and insurance costs affect the value? |
This table is a comparison framework, not a classification of every product. Confirm the specific product’s legal form, issuer, operator, counterparties, collateral and investor rights in its own prospectus and registration documents.

Do not confuse a futures contract with the commodity
The CFTC states: “The contracts do not convey ownership in the asset itself.” A futures contract is a time-limited agreement whose value changes with the contract price. The CFTC also warns that “Commodity futures markets present different risks than securities markets.” A fund using futures can therefore perform differently from the commodity’s spot price, sometimes substantially, even when the broad price direction is the same.
Step 1: Establish the exposure before comparing fees
Read the summary prospectus, full prospectus and latest shareholder report. Then answer these questions in order:
- What is the stated objective? Is the product seeking spot-like exposure, a particular futures index, a rules-based basket, an inverse result or leveraged performance?
- What does it actually trade or hold? List the permitted futures, options, swaps, foreign-exchange contracts, physical assets, cash and collateral.
- Which commodity or index is covered? A broad index can behave very differently from a single-metal, energy or agricultural contract.
- Who operates the vehicle? Identify the sponsor, commodity pool operator, adviser, trustee and any material counterparties.
- What rights do shareholders have? Check creation and redemption procedures, suspension provisions, liquidation language and the method used to calculate NAV.
- Can the operator change the strategy? The CFTC recommends checking whether an operator can change instruments, markets or methods without notifying participants or obtaining a vote.
Use the permitted-investments section rather than a holdings snapshot alone. A monthly holdings file shows what the product held on one date; the prospectus explains what it may hold when markets, liquidity or regulations change.
Step 2: Understand futures rolls and tracking differences
How a roll works
Futures contracts expire. A fund that wants continuing exposure normally closes its expiring “near” or “front-month” contract and buys a later “out-month” contract. That replacement is the roll. The fund’s result reflects changes in the futures contracts it owns, the roll from one contract to another, collateral income or losses, fees and trading friction—not simply the change in a spot quotation.
Contango can create a drag
If the later contract costs more than the expiring contract, the fund sells the cheaper contract and buys the more expensive one. Repeating that process can reduce returns even if the spot commodity rises. This price relationship is commonly called contango.

Backwardation can create positive roll yield
If the later contract costs less than the expiring contract, replacing the position can add value before fees and other effects. This is often called backwardation or positive roll yield. It is not guaranteed: the futures curve can change between rolls, and other sources of tracking difference remain.
Questions to ask about the roll schedule
- Which contract months are eligible?
- On which dates or under which index rules does the fund roll?
- Does it roll over one day or several days?
- Can it deviate from the announced index or use alternative contracts during stressed markets?
- What happened to tracking results during prior periods of steep contango or backwardation?
A rising spot price alone does not establish that a futures-based fund will rise by the same percentage. Compare the product’s stated benchmark, its historical tracking results and the contract mechanics that generate those results.
Step 3: Calculate the all-in cost
An expense ratio is only one line in the cost calculation. Review the prospectus fee table, financial statements and trading data for each of the following.
| Cost | Where to find it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Management or advisory fee | Annual operating-expense table | Charged for portfolio management and administration, usually as a percentage of assets. |
| Brokerage commissions and transaction fees | Expense disclosure and financial statements | Futures, options, swaps or physical transactions can create costs outside the headline operating expense. |
| Other direct or indirect expenses | Prospectus notes and financial statements | Custody, accounting, legal, listing, audit, financing and collateral arrangements can affect returns. |
| Your brokerage commission | Your broker’s current schedule | A fund-level expense does not include the commission you pay to buy or sell shares. |
| Bid-ask spread | Current quote and historical median-spread data | The spread is an immediate trading cost. It can be larger in volatile or thinly traded markets. |
| Premium or discount to NAV | Fund website, exchange data or shareholder materials | You may pay more or receive less than the value of the underlying portfolio when buying or selling. |
The CFTC’s commodity-pool disclosure framework calls for fees, expenses and a break-even analysis. SEC investor guidance separately recommends reviewing annual operating expenses, broker commissions, NAV, closing market price, premiums or discounts, holdings and the median bid-ask spread.
A fund-specific cost example
The iShares S&P GSCI Commodity-Indexed Trust reported approximately 0.03% of net asset value in brokerage commissions and transaction fees for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2025. That is a historical, GSG-specific disclosure. It is not a category average, a forecast or the trust’s total cost, and it should not be used to estimate the cost of another product.

Compare costs for your expected holding period
For a long holding period, recurring operating expenses and roll effects may dominate. For a short trade, the spread, commission and the premium or discount at entry and exit can matter more. Estimate both sides of the trade: the cost to buy and the cost to sell. Use current data because spreads, premiums and discounts move over time.

Exchange-traded shares trade at market prices, while NAV is calculated from the value of the portfolio under the fund’s valuation rules. Those prices can differ. A product with large assets is not automatically cheap to trade, and a low expense ratio does not guarantee a narrow spread.
Review these trading indicators
- Median bid-ask spread: Prefer a current or recently reported median over a single momentary quote.
- NAV premium or discount: Check both the latest figure and its historical range.
- Holdings and creation/redemption activity: These help indicate how closely share supply can respond to demand.
- Trading volume and market conditions: Volume can change sharply during commodity-market stress; do not treat one quiet session as a permanent condition.
- Redemption and suspension terms: Commodity pools and trusts may have provisions that differ from a conventional registered ETF.
When the spread or premium/discount is unusually wide, a limit order can control the maximum price you pay or minimum price you accept, although execution is not guaranteed. Recheck the quote immediately before submitting an order.
Step 5: Read the tax section for the exact fund
Commodity products do not share one universal tax treatment. The legal structure, instruments, investor residence, account type and holding activity can all affect forms, timing and the character of income or gains. Never infer a fund’s tax reporting from the fact that it trades on an exchange.
What the GSG prospectus illustrates
The GSG prospectus filed May 20, 2026 says holders receive an IRS Schedule K-1 reporting their allocable share of trust income, gain, loss and deduction. Its tax discussion expects the trust’s index futures to be Section 1256 contracts and describes mark-to-market treatment, with specified gains and losses generally characterized as 40% short-term and 60% long-term, subject to exceptions.

Those statements apply to that prospectus’s described trust and assumed U.S.-holder circumstances. The same discussion is technical, does not cover every state, local or foreign tax issue, and recommends consulting a tax adviser. A K-1 or Section 1256 treatment must not be generalized to every commodity exchange-traded product.
Build a fund-specific tax checklist
- Find the current prospectus tax section and the latest tax-reporting documents.
- Identify the product’s legal classification and the instruments that generate its income or gains.
- Confirm which form investors receive and when it is normally made available.
- Check whether the discussion assumes a U.S. taxable investor, a particular entity type or a particular account.
- Ask how state, local, foreign, retirement-account and loss-reporting rules could affect you.
- Obtain personal advice before trading if a K-1, mark-to-market rule, partnership allocation or cross-border issue could change your filing.
For another product, repeat this process from its own current filings. The sources available here do not establish a universal tax comparison across all commodity structures or jurisdictions.

Common selection mistakes—and the correction
“It says ETF, so it must be a conventional ETF”
Correction: Verify registration, legal form, issuer and investor rights in the prospectus. Commodity trusts, pools and notes can trade on an exchange without fitting the Investor.gov description of a registered open-end ETF or unit investment trust.
“The spot price rose, so the fund should have matched it”
Correction: Identify whether the fund owns futures and examine its roll schedule, the futures curve, collateral results and fees. Futures do not convey ownership of the underlying asset and can diverge from spot prices.
Best Value
“The lowest expense ratio is the cheapest choice”
Correction: Add brokerage and transaction costs, your commission, the spread and any NAV premium or discount. A low annual fee can be offset by expensive execution or persistent roll losses.
“All commodity products issue the same tax form”
Correction: Read the specific tax section and latest tax documents. The GSG example describes a K-1 and expected Section 1256 treatment, but those details are not universal.
“A holdings page tells me everything”
Correction: Use holdings to see current positions, then read the permitted-investments and strategy-change provisions to understand what the product can do next.

Final pre-trade checklist
- Have you identified the legal structure and issuer?
- Can you explain what instruments create the exposure?
- Do you know which contracts are rolled, when they are rolled and whether the rules can change?
- Have you compared operating expenses with brokerage, indirect costs, your commission and the spread?
- Did you check current NAV, market price, premium or discount and median bid-ask spread?
- Have you read redemption, suspension and counterparty provisions?
- Do you know which tax form and treatment the fund documents describe?
- Have you considered your jurisdiction, account type, time horizon and ability to tolerate tracking differences?
If any answer is unclear, the next step is not to rely on the product label; it is to obtain the current prospectus, shareholder report, tax documents and market data for that specific product.
