Choose by search scope first: use ripgrep for recursive, ignore-aware searches through a working tree, and git grep when you want Git-aware searches across tracked or indexed content or need Git pathspecs. Then check whether your patterns require a particular regex feature, how results will feed into scripts or editors, and how each tool behaves on your actual repository.
Start by defining what files the search must cover
“Search this project” can mean different things. A recursive filesystem search walks directories and applies the tool’s filtering rules. A repository-aware search can instead focus on files known to Git, including tracked content or the index. Those scopes can return different matches, so compare tools only after deciding what counts as an eligible file.
Choose ripgrep for recursive working-tree searches
ripgrep is designed for recursive search and, by default, respects ignore files while skipping hidden and binary files. That makes it a practical starting point when searching a working tree without wanting generated, ignored, or hidden content to dominate results. Its user guide documents how to change filtering behavior when the default scope is too narrow.
If a match might be in an ignored or hidden path, do not assume it is absent just because a default search found nothing. Check the guide for the relevant options and explicitly broaden the search. The important distinction is that “no result” under default filters does not mean “no match anywhere in the directory tree.”

Choose git grep for Git-aware searches
git grep is built around Git repository search. Its documented modes and pathspecs let you define which repository content to search, including tracked or indexed content as appropriate to the mode you select. Consult the git grep documentation for the exact mode and pathspec syntax your task requires.
This is useful when the question is specifically about repository-managed files rather than every file currently present on disk. Be precise about the mode: a Git-aware search and an unrestricted recursive walk answer different questions.

Check regex requirements before standardizing on a tool
A pattern that works in one search tool may not work in another because their regex engines do not necessarily support the same constructs. ripgrep’s default regex engine intentionally does not support look-around or backreferences. Its FAQ documents an optional PCRE2 mode for searches that need those features; see the ripgrep FAQ.
Before adopting a tool for a team, list the pattern constructs your searches actually use. If a pattern relies on look-around or backreferences, verify the selected engine and mode rather than assuming a familiar regex is portable. Enabling a more capable engine can address a compatibility need, but it is a deliberate choice, not evidence that all engines behave identically.

Compare behavior that affects daily use
Once scope and pattern needs are clear, evaluate the details that change what a search returns and how easily you can use the result:
- Filtering: establish how the tool handles ignore files, hidden paths, binary files, and symlinks, and how to override those defaults.
- Search domain: distinguish the working tree, tracked files, the index, and explicit paths. Confirm the mode rather than relying on the tool name.
- Output and scripts: test the output format and exit status in the shell scripts, editor integrations, or other automation that will consume results.
- Platform and installation: verify current support and installation instructions for the operating systems and environments your team uses.
- Regex: test representative patterns, including any less-portable constructs, in the intended engine and mode.
Benchmark only equivalent searches
There is no universal speed winner established by a single benchmark. A search can appear faster simply because it skipped files that another tool included. Performance also depends on the pattern, corpus, filtering, and environment. ripgrep’s benchmark page reports timings for particular patterns and datasets; those results describe those workloads, not every repository or search task.

- Choose representative repositories and patterns from your normal work.
- Make the tools search the same paths and apply equivalent hidden-file, ignore, and binary-file rules.
- Use the regex modes and output options you would actually use; do not compare a constrained search with a broader one.
- Run the same searches in the same environment and compare both elapsed time and whether each result set answers the intended question.
Where ag, ack, and ugrep fit
ag, ack, and ugrep are reasonable candidates to include if they are already part of your workflow or appear to meet a specific requirement. The available evidence does not establish a complete, current feature-by-feature comparison for these tools. Verify their current official documentation for scope, filtering, regex support, output, platform availability, and installation before choosing one over ripgrep or Git’s built-in search.

For many developers, the efficient path is to start with ripgrep for ordinary recursive working-tree searches and reach for git grep when the task is specifically about Git-managed content. Add alternatives to the shortlist only to satisfy a concrete requirement, then check their current project documentation and test them under the same conditions.
