Among the current examples covered here, the Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket is Carhartt’s Level 1 Warm option for cooler conditions. The Washed Duck Insulated Active Jac (J130) and Washed Duck Bartlett Active Jac are Level 3 Warmest options for severely cold conditions. Those labels are Carhartt product categories, not universal temperature ratings: the product pages do not provide a specific minimum temperature.
What Carhartt’s warmth ratings actually tell you
Carhartt’s warmth scale is useful for sorting jackets, but it should not be read as a weather forecast. The Detroit is labeled Level 1 Warm and described for cooler conditions. The J130 and Bartlett Active Jac are labeled Level 3 Warmest and described for severely cold conditions. No reviewed product page assigns any of the three a temperature range, wind-chill limit, or guaranteed comfort threshold.

Carhartt summarizes the lower category this way: “Gear that’s been rated WARM does its best work in cooler temps.” Its description of the highest category is “Engineered For High Warmth in Severely Cold Conditions.” Treat both statements as manufacturer guidance. Your activity level, wind exposure, humidity, base layers, midlayers, and personal cold tolerance can move the practical answer well above or below any informal temperature guess.
- Level 1 Warm: a starting point for cool mornings, shoulder seasons, and variable weather when a heavily insulated coat could be excessive.
- Level 3 Warmest: the stronger starting point for severe cold, especially when you need insulation and room for a substantial midlayer.
- Between the labels: construction matters. A hood, storm cuffs, insulation in the sleeves, and wind-blocking features can change comfort even when two jackets share a warmth category.
Use the rating to narrow the field, not to decide whether a jacket is safe or adequate for a specific forecast. For cold exposure involving long stationary periods, precipitation, or safety-critical work, match the complete clothing system to the conditions rather than relying on a jacket label.

J01, J130, or Bartlett: the documented differences
| Model | Carhartt warmth description | Shell, lining, and insulation | Fit and coverage details | Best-supported use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket (103828) | Level 1 Warm; cooler conditions | 12-ounce cotton duck shell; blanket-lined body; quilted nylon sleeves | Relaxed fit; bi-swing back for shoulder movement | Cool mornings, changing seasons, or work when a heavily insulated jacket would be too much |
| Washed Duck Insulated Active Jac (J130 / 104050) | Level 3 Warmest; severely cold conditions | 12-ounce washed cotton duck shell; 80g 3M Thinsulate featherless polyester insulation | Loose fit; hood; internal storm cuffs | Cold conditions when insulation, hood coverage, and room over a sweatshirt or hoodie are priorities |
| Washed Duck Bartlett Active Jac (106980) | Level 3 Warmest; severely cold conditions | 12-ounce soft duck shell; 100g polyester insulation in the body, sleeves, and hood | Loose fit; Wind Fighter feature | Cold, windy workdays when insulation throughout the jacket and loose layering fit matter |
The shell weights are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of durability or warmth. Likewise, the 80g and 100g figures identify the stated insulation amounts; they do not by themselves predict comfort for every wearer or activity.
Match the jacket to your climate
Cool, variable, or transitional weather
The J01 Detroit is the clearest fit when temperatures move through the day and you want a work jacket rather than a highly insulated winter coat. Its Level 1 Warm classification, blanket-lined body, and quilted sleeves provide structure and some warmth without the documented insulation package used in the two Level 3 jackets. A relaxed fit and bi-swing back favor reaching, driving, and routine work movement.
Choose this direction when your normal system is a shirt or light sweater, when you frequently go indoors, or when overheating is a bigger concern than standing outside for hours. If your regular midlayer is a thick hoodie, check the shoulder and chest room in person; relaxed fit is not the same as the J130’s explicitly layering-oriented loose fit.

Severely cold conditions with a bulky midlayer
The J130 is the most straightforward choice of these examples when you expect to wear a sweatshirt or hoodie underneath. Carhartt describes its loose fit as providing “extra room through the chest, shoulders, and body for comfortable movement and layering over sweatshirts or hoodies.” The hood and internal storm cuffs add coverage at openings where drafts commonly enter, while the 80g synthetic insulation supplies a stated insulated layer across the jacket.

That combination is useful for outdoor work, commuting, or errands in severe cold when you need room to add or remove a midlayer without binding. The loose cut can feel oversized if you normally wear only a thin base layer, so size it for your actual winter system rather than for a T-shirt.
Cold and windy workdays
The Bartlett is another Level 3 Warmest option. Its listed 100g polyester insulation extends through the body, sleeves, and hood, rather than being limited to one section. Carhartt also identifies a Wind Fighter feature and describes the jacket for cold, windy work use.
Consider it when sleeve and hood insulation are priorities or when wind exposure is a routine part of the job. The loose fit leaves room for layering, but the same sizing caution applies: evaluate the complete outfit, including gloves, hard-hat liners, or other equipment that may occupy the hood and cuffs.
How lining and insulation change the decision
Detroit: lined, but not one of the insulated Level 3 designs
The Detroit’s blanket-lined body and quilted nylon sleeves create different feel and movement characteristics from a jacket filled with a specified insulation weight. The body lining can add comfort and a little buffering against cool air, while the quilted sleeves are intended to keep arm movement manageable. The product information does not assign the Detroit a gram rating for insulation, so do not treat its lining as equivalent to the J130’s 80g or Bartlett’s 100g polyester insulation.

J130: synthetic insulation with a layering-first cut
The J130 combines a 12-ounce washed duck shell with 80g 3M Thinsulate featherless polyester insulation. The synthetic fill is a stated construction detail; it is not evidence of a particular temperature rating. Its practical advantage in this comparison is the combination of insulation, hood coverage, storm cuffs, and a loose cut intended for a sweatshirt or hoodie underneath.
Bartlett: insulation continues into the hood and sleeves
The Bartlett lists 100g polyester insulation in the body, sleeves, and hood. That full-area specification matters if your arms and head become cold before your torso, or if you spend time in wind rather than moving continuously. It remains a Level 3 Warmest garment, not a promise of comfort at a stated temperature.
Check coverage where cold air enters
Warmth is not only the amount of insulation. Openings at the neck, wrists, and hood can determine whether a jacket works in moving air.
- Hood: the J130 has a hood, and the Bartlett lists insulation in its hood. The Detroit specifications supplied here do not identify a hood, so verify the current listing if head coverage is essential.
- Storm cuffs: the J130 has internal storm cuffs, a useful barrier at the wrists when sleeves meet gloves.
- Wind control: the Bartlett includes Carhartt’s Wind Fighter feature. The supplied Detroit specifications do not state an equivalent wind feature.
- Shell: all three use a duck shell, but the listed fabric descriptions differ: cotton duck for the Detroit, washed cotton duck for the J130, and soft duck for the Bartlett.
These details support a reasoned choice, but they do not establish waterproofing, seam sealing, or a precipitation rating. If rain or wet snow is part of your climate, confirm those properties on the current product page before relying on the jacket as outerwear.

Choose a fit that works over your real layers
Fit should be judged with the clothing and equipment you will actually use. A jacket that feels comfortable over a T-shirt may restrict your shoulders once a hoodie, work shirt, or insulated vest is added.
- Write down your normal cold-weather stack. Include the base layer, shirt, sweatshirt or hoodie, and any vest or protective equipment.
- Start with the intended cut. The Detroit is listed as relaxed fit; the J130 and Bartlett are listed as loose fit. Carhartt specifically connects the J130’s loose fit with layering room.
- Check shoulder movement. Raise both arms, reach forward as if steering, and cross your arms. The Detroit’s bi-swing back is a documented movement feature; a loose body on the other models provides space, but neither description replaces an actual movement check.
- Check sleeve and cuff overlap. Sleeves should cover the wrist when you reach, while still leaving room for gloves. On the J130, confirm that the internal storm cuffs sit comfortably over your base layers.
- Close the jacket over the thickest planned layer. Test the zipper or front closure without pulling across the chest. If you will carry tools or wear a harness, perform that test with the equipment in place.
- Use the current size chart. Model names, measurements, and available sizes can change. Compare your body measurements with the current chart and try the planned combination whenever possible.
A deliberately roomy jacket is not automatically warmer: excess space can admit drafts, while a tight jacket can compress insulation and limit movement. Aim for enough volume to preserve your layering system without creating gaps at the neck, cuffs, or hem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Work movement versus everyday wear
For active work
Movement changes how much insulation you need. Someone shoveling, loading, or walking continuously may generate more heat than someone standing at a job site. The Detroit’s bi-swing back addresses shoulder mobility in a lighter design. The J130’s loose chest, shoulder, and body dimensions are intended to accommodate movement and a sweatshirt or hoodie. The Bartlett’s loose fit and insulation through the sleeves and hood support cold, windy work where coverage matters.

For commuting and casual use
For short trips between heated buildings, the Detroit may be easier to regulate because it is the Level 1 option. A Level 3 jacket can be more comfortable when you wait outdoors, walk slowly, or face wind, but it may feel excessive during indoor time. Decide based on the longest uninterrupted outdoor period, not only the temperature at the moment you leave home.
A practical selection process
Use this sequence when two jackets still seem plausible:
- Identify exposure. Is your typical use cool and changeable, severely cold, or severely cold plus windy?
- Pick the warmth category. Start with Level 1 for cooler conditions and Level 3 Warmest for severe cold.
- Decide whether you need a hood. If yes, the J130 and Bartlett have documented hood coverage; verify the current Detroit listing before choosing it for head protection.
- Decide where insulation matters. Choose the J130 for an 80g insulated, hoodie-friendly system; consider the Bartlett if 100g insulation through the body, sleeves, and hood is the priority.
- Evaluate wind exposure. The Bartlett lists Wind Fighter, while the J130 lists internal storm cuffs. Select the feature that addresses your main draft point.
- Test the cut with your midlayer. Relaxed Detroit fit and bi-swing mobility serve a different purpose from the loose, layering-oriented cuts of the Level 3 jackets.
- Confirm current details. Check the live product page for model number, available sizes, closure details, stock, and any specification updates before ordering.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning a warmth label into a temperature claim: none of the reviewed pages supplies a numeric threshold.
- Assuming all Level 3 jackets are interchangeable: the J130 and Bartlett differ in insulation amount, hood and cuff details, and stated wind feature.
- Buying by chest measurement alone: shoulder movement, sleeve overlap, and the thickness of your midlayer determine whether the jacket works in practice.
- Confusing lining with insulation: the Detroit’s blanket-lined body is not documented as an 80g or 100g insulated construction.
- Ignoring the head and wrists: a warm torso can still feel cold if your hood or cuffs leave openings in wind.
- Assuming a duck shell is waterproof: the supplied specifications do not establish waterproofing or a precipitation rating.
- Using an old listing: model names, stock, specifications, and sizing can change. Verify the current page at the time of purchase.
Which jacket should you get?
Choose the Iconic J01 Duck Detroit when your climate is mainly cool or variable, you prefer a less insulated work-jacket feel, and shoulder mobility is important. Its Level 1 Warm classification is not equivalent to either Level 3 option.
Choose the Washed Duck Insulated Active Jac J130 when severe cold, a bulky hoodie or sweatshirt, hood coverage, and wrist protection are central requirements. It is the clearest match in this group for a roomy insulated layering system.
Choose the Washed Duck Bartlett Active Jac when you need Level 3 warmth with insulation stated for the body, sleeves, and hood, especially for cold and windy work. Its Wind Fighter feature and full-area insulation make it the more coverage-focused alternative in this comparison.
None of these choices can be reduced to a guaranteed temperature number. Select the warmth category that matches your exposure, then confirm the fit and coverage with your complete clothing system.
What to verify before ordering
Carhartt product specifications, model naming, availability, and stock can change. The details above reflect the official product information checked on October 13, 2026. Before purchase, open the current listing for the exact model number—103828, J130/104050, or 106980—and verify the warmth description, insulation, hood and cuff details, size chart, and available sizes. If your use involves wet conditions, also look for a current statement about water resistance or waterproof construction; that information is not established by the specifications summarized here.
