Start with the token issuer—not a wallet list. Ordinary Cardano native tokens do not enforce transfer-time rules on their own, while a restricted token may require a particular script, smart-wallet address, registry check, or issuer-approved app. A wallet that connects to a dApp or signs Cardano transactions is not automatically compatible with that workflow.
First identify what “transfer restrictions” means for this token
Ask the issuer for the token’s canonical policy ID and asset name, then ask how transfers are restricted and which exact app or steps are required. “Restricted” can describe different mechanisms, and the wallet choice depends on the actual on-chain and issuer-defined workflow.

Ordinary native tokens
Cardano’s ordinary native tokens are recorded on the ledger. Their minting policy governs creation and burning; normal transfers after issuance do not execute that policy as a transfer-time rule. It therefore does not, by itself, enforce an allowlist or blacklist. Cardano’s documentation explains that transfer validation requires a mechanism such as locking tokens at a script address, where spending is subject to validation. See Cardano’s overview of native tokens.

CIP-113 proposes a standard for programmable tokens whose ownership changes require successful script execution. The proposal describes a registry to identify programmable tokens and their transfer logic, as well as deterministic smart-wallet addresses. The CIP page, updated September 29, 2026, lists implementors as N/A; it is a proposal, not evidence that wallets across the ecosystem already support these transfers. Read the CIP-113 proposal and the Cardano Developer Portal’s programmable-token overview.

What a Cardano wallet connection does—and does not—tell you
CIP-30 defines a browser interface through which a dApp can request wallet information such as addresses and UTXOs, and ask the wallet to sign a transaction. The wallet keeps the keys and the user approves signatures. The Cardano Developer Portal summarizes the security boundary this way: “The keys never leave the user’s device; the wallet prompts the user to approve each signature.” See Connect a Wallet and the CIP-30 specification.
That connection and signing capability is not proof that the wallet understands a particular token’s transfer rules. A wallet may be able to sign a transaction while the token’s required validation, registry lookup, or issuer process is missing. Confirm support for the specific asset and transaction route with both the issuer and the wallet provider.

How to choose: verify the transfer path before moving tokens
- Get the token identifiers and instructions. Ask the issuer for the canonical policy ID and asset name, the restriction mechanism, and the exact transfer app or instructions. Avoid relying on a ticker or token name alone.
- Ask what the transaction must satisfy. Find out whether the transfer requires a smart-wallet address, registry lookup, allowlist or KYC check, a particular dApp, or a specific wallet integration. Do not assume any of these are available for every token.
- Confirm exact compatibility. Ask the issuer and wallet provider whether that wallet supports that token’s complete transfer workflow—not merely Cardano, CIP-30 connections, or transaction signing. Request issuer-specific steps if support is unclear.
- Compare custody and signing. Decide whether a software wallet or hardware-backed signing better fits your needs. Check device compatibility, how transactions are reviewed, and how recovery works. Cardano’s Keys & Wallets guidance covers wallet and key-handling models. A hardware device can change how keys are held and used; it cannot override token rules.
- Do not experiment with a transfer to test support. If the issuer’s path is unclear, get instructions before sending even a small amount. A destination or transaction that does not satisfy the token’s validation may not complete as intended.
Compare wallets on the factors that affect this token
| Factor | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer-defined token workflow | Explicit confirmation for the exact asset and transfer route from the issuer and wallet provider | This is decisive: general Cardano support does not establish compliance with token-specific rules. |
| dApp connection and signing | Whether the wallet supports the required connection interface and lets you review and approve the relevant transaction | A connection interface is only a way for an app to request information and signatures; it does not supply missing token logic. |
| Custody and device support | Software or hardware-backed signing, compatible devices, and recovery practices | These choices affect key handling, not whether a transfer passes the token’s rules. |
| Transaction review and instructions | Whether the transaction details and issuer-provided steps are clear before you approve | Clear review helps you check that you are following the required path rather than signing an unexpected request. |
Questions to ask before choosing
- What are the policy ID and asset name for the token?
- Are transfers governed by a script address or another programmable-token mechanism?
- Is a smart-wallet address, registry lookup, allowlist or KYC check required?
- Which dApp and wallet workflow does the issuer support for this exact token?
- Can the wallet provider confirm that workflow, including transaction review and signing?
- What key custody and recovery model suits your needs without sharing your recovery phrase?
