Before signing, obtain the vehicle’s current privacy notice, identify every data stream and recipient, test the enrollment screens, document what works without an account or cellular connection, and confirm how to access, delete and reset data.
Start with the exact car, not the badge
A connected vehicle can create records from ordinary driving and from features you may never consider “online.” Potential streams include precise location, trip and driving behavior, vehicle status and diagnostic codes, connected-service use, paired-phone identifiers, contacts and destinations, voice recordings, and camera or other sensor data. Some information may be processed locally; other information may be transmitted to a manufacturer, associated with an account, or shared with outside companies.

The same brand can use different systems across model years, trims, countries, software versions and optional services. A privacy policy written for an entire company therefore cannot tell you exactly what a particular car collects. Check the notice named for the vehicle, the connected-service terms shown during delivery, the owner’s manual, and the controls available in that car’s screen and mobile app.

Why a brand-wide privacy promise is not enough
Whether a car is relatively data-light depends on several variables:
#1 Best Overall
- [Ultra-Lightweight Ear Buds Designed for Small Ears] Each earbud weighs only 3.7g and features a compact, ergonomic in-ear design made especially for small ears. Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping.The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.
- [Bluetooth 5.3 & Stable Connection] Bluetooth 5.3 provides fast pairing, stable wireless performance, and reduced dropouts as you move around home or office.
- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Vehicle configuration: a trim with a built-in modem, camera, voice assistant or subscription package can create different data flows from a lower trim.
- Market and law: disclosures and consumer rights can differ by country or U.S. state.
- Service enrollment: navigation, remote commands, roadside help, a hotspot, diagnostics and driving-score programs can each have separate terms.
- Account and settings: pairing a phone, creating an owner account or accepting a consent prompt can activate additional processing.
- Technical exceptions: a service may be optional while limited safety or regulatory functions still collect information.
A 2023 Mozilla review, as summarized in a congressional document reproducing Associated Press reporting, said none of 25 reviewed car brands met Mozilla’s minimum privacy standards and reported that 19 automakers’ notices said they could sell personal data. Those are dated findings about policies under Mozilla’s criteria, not a current rating of every model or proof that every vehicle behaves identically. Read the underlying notice for the car you are considering rather than treating the review as a model-level score (congressional document reproducing the reporting).
Build a written comparison sheet
Make one copy of this worksheet for every candidate vehicle. Ask the dealer or manufacturer to answer in writing, and save screenshots or PDFs of the notices shown on the car’s display.
| Question | Evidence to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| What is collected? | Categories and examples: location, trips, speed or acceleration, vehicle status, diagnostics, voice, phone identifiers, contacts, camera and sensor data. | “Vehicle data” is too broad to reveal whether sensitive location or behavior records are involved. |
| Where is it generated and sent? | Whether processing is local, transmitted over cellular or Wi‑Fi, stored in the car, tied to an account, or retained in a cloud service. | A setting that stops one service may not stop another transmission. |
| Why is it used? | Emergency response, remote access, navigation, diagnostics, product development, marketing, insurance, driving scores and other purposes. | Use required to deliver a requested feature is different from unrelated analytics or advertising. |
| Who receives it? | Manufacturer affiliates, service providers, insurers, roadside providers, data partners and other named recipients. | Recipients determine how far the information can travel and which policies apply. |
| Is enrollment optional? | Consent screen, default state, separate toggles and the effect of declining one service. | A salesperson’s general assurance may not match the vehicle’s actual enrollment flow. |
| What controls exist? | In-car menus, app switches, account portal, customer-service route, privacy-request form and deletion process. | You need a practical way to stop or limit collection after purchase. |
| What stops when connectivity is declined? | A complete list of lost features and whether safety systems remain available. | Privacy choices can have real convenience and safety-assistance trade-offs. |
| What happens at resale? | Factory-reset instructions, profile removal, account transfer and data-request options. | Without a reset, the next driver may see your destinations, contacts or paired devices. |
Inventory the data streams
Location and trip history
Ask whether the car records precise coordinates, route history, start and end points, geofences, time stamps or speed. Find out whether location is collected continuously, only when a feature is used, or during an emergency. “Location sharing off” can mean that a particular app no longer displays your position; it does not automatically prove that the vehicle’s modem has stopped transmitting.
Driving behavior
Look for acceleration, braking, cornering, distance, mileage, seat-belt status, driver identity and driving-score fields. Ask whether these records support a feature you requested or may be used for product development, marketing, insurance or another service. The retention period and ability to delete older trips are as important as the initial collection.
Vehicle status and diagnostics
Connected systems may report battery or fuel level, odometer, tire pressure, fault codes, charging sessions, maintenance events and software status. These records can enable useful alerts but can also reveal when and where a vehicle is used when combined with location. Ask whether diagnostic transmission can be disabled independently from emergency assistance.

Phones, contacts, voice and destinations
Pairing a phone can copy identifiers, call history, contacts, text-message metadata or navigation destinations into the vehicle. Voice controls may create recordings or transcripts. Before accepting a prompt, ask whether processing occurs on the device or in a cloud service, how long recordings or transcripts remain, and whether deleting a phone profile also deletes copies held elsewhere.
Cameras and other sensors
Exterior and interior cameras, microphones, radar and other sensors can produce images, audio or inferred information. Determine whether data is used only for an on-board safety function or uploaded for diagnostics, development or other purposes. Ask specifically about cabin monitoring and whether a camera can be disabled without disabling a safety feature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Identify purposes and recipients
Read the purpose and sharing sections line by line. Sort each disclosed use into three groups:
- Requested feature: information needed to provide emergency help, remote lock or start, live navigation, a hotspot or a diagnostic alert you chose.
- Operations and improvement: security, fraud prevention, software updates, troubleshooting and product development.
- Separate commercial use: marketing, targeted advertising, insurance, driving scores, data products or sharing with partners.
Then list every recipient category and ask whether it receives raw records, aggregated statistics or a score derived from the records. A service provider processing data for the manufacturer is not the same as an unrelated recipient using it for its own purposes. The FTC wrote in May 2024: “Firms do not have the free license to monetize people’s information beyond purposes needed to provide their requested product or service.” That sentence is a general statement in the FTC’s article, not a car-specific legal ruling; use it as a question to ask about any secondary use (FTC, “Cars & Consumer Data: On Unlawful Collection & Use,” May 14, 2024).
Check enrollment and defaults at the dealership
- Request the current notice first. Ask for the privacy notice and connected-service terms for the exact model year, trim and market. Record the version date and save a copy.
- Watch the delivery setup. Have the salesperson show every consent screen. Ask whether telematics is off until you enroll, whether a trial automatically starts, and whether declining one service also declines or disables others.
- Separate accounts. Determine which functions require a manufacturer account, a paid subscription, a phone pairing or a separate roadside provider. Do not accept a bundled account merely to complete delivery if you do not want the services.
- Test the decline path. Ask what happens when you choose “not now,” disable precise location or refuse data sharing. Photograph the resulting menu and list any warning or lost function.
- Get an itemized answer. Ask the dealer to write down which data is collected when the car is un-enrolled, which safety-related exceptions apply, and how to reverse the choice.
Company letters to Senator Edward Markey illustrate why the details matter. In a response dated January 8, 2024, Subaru stated, “Vehicle telematics data is not collected by Subaru unless the customer voluntarily enrolls in Starlink.” That is a company representation about the described services and period, not an independent audit or a guarantee about every other Subaru data stream. Other automaker responses described opt-in connected services while noting limited safety-related collection in certain circumstances. Use such statements as leads for questions, not as a universal brand ranking (automaker responses published by Senator Markey’s office).

Map the controls you can actually use
In-car controls
Open the vehicle’s privacy, connectivity, data-sharing and location menus before buying. Record the exact labels and whether each switch applies to all collection or only a single feature. Check whether the setting survives a restart, software update, driver-profile change and a change of primary account.
Mobile-app and account controls
Look for controls in the companion app and web account. A car can remain enrolled even when an app is deleted. Ask how to revoke tokens, remove a former driver, close an account and stop remote commands. Confirm whether a subscription cancellation changes data collection or only billing.
Access and deletion requests
Find the privacy-request address or web form and ask what identity proof, vehicle identification number and time frame are required. Request a copy of information associated with your account and ask which records cannot be deleted because of safety, legal or security obligations. Keep the confirmation and note the date of completion.
Precise-location switches
Ask whether a location switch stops transmission, prevents an app from displaying location, or merely disables a feature such as roadside tracking. Have the representative explain what remains collected under emergency or regulatory exceptions.
Understand the functionality trade-offs
Declining connectivity can reduce data collection, but it can also remove services you value. Require a model-specific answer rather than assuming every feature behaves the same way.

| Function | What may depend on connectivity | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency and roadside assistance | Calling, crash notification, vehicle location and two-way support may require a modem, subscription or account. | Does the service work without enrollment, and what limited safety collection remains? |
| Remote commands | Remote lock, unlock, start, climate control and vehicle location normally need an account and cellular connection. | Does disabling data sharing cancel remote commands, and can the command history be deleted? |
| Navigation and traffic | Live traffic, cloud search, destination sending and map updates may stop; offline maps may remain. | Which navigation functions work entirely offline? |
| Hotspot and connected entertainment | Wi‑Fi hotspot, streaming and account-linked content generally require a subscription or paired service. | Can the hotspot be disabled while other telematics remains on? |
| Diagnostics and maintenance | Automatic fault alerts, service reminders and remote troubleshooting may be unavailable. | Can diagnostic codes be read locally, and is transmission separately controllable? |
| Over-the-air updates | Some software or map updates may require connectivity, while critical updates may use a different process. | How are updates delivered when the owner declines connected services? |
| Safety systems | Driver assistance and crash-avoidance hardware may operate locally, but connected emergency features can be separate. | Which safety functions are independent of telematics, and where is that documented? |
Never infer that disabling a telematics account disables airbags, braking assistance or other safety hardware. Ask for the owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s explicit explanation of each system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare two finalists without inventing a privacy score
If two or more cars remain viable, compare them on the same axes and keep the evidence beside each answer:
- number and sensitivity of data categories;
- continuous versus event-based collection;
- opt-in, opt-out and default enrollment;
- precision, persistence and independence of controls;
- recipients, retention periods and secondary purposes;
- ability to obtain a copy or request deletion;
- features lost when cellular service or an account is declined;
- ease of removing profiles and transferring ownership.
Do not compress these factors into one “privacy score” unless you publish a defined weighting method. A car with more collection may still be the better fit for someone who needs emergency assistance, while a buyer who never uses remote features may prefer the vehicle with fewer mandatory services. Make the trade-off explicit instead of calling either car universally private.
Use the FTC’s 2026 GM and OnStar order in the right context
The Federal Trade Commission finalized an order on January 16, 2026, resolving allegations that GM and OnStar collected and sold geolocation data without informed consent. According to the FTC, the order requires the covered companies to obtain affirmative express consent before collecting, using or sharing connected-vehicle data, subject to stated exceptions; provide a way for U.S. consumers to request a copy and seek deletion; provide a way to disable precise-geolocation collection where the vehicle has the necessary technology; and provide an opt-out for geolocation and driving-behavior collection with limited exceptions. The FTC describes the last requirement as a way to “opt out of the collection of geolocation and driver behavior data, with some limited exceptions” (FTC release, January 16, 2026).
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This is a company-specific finalized order, not a rule requiring every automaker to offer identical switches. Treat the consent, deletion and opt-out terms as requirements for the covered companies and vehicles within the order’s scope. For another manufacturer, verify the notice and controls directly.
Best Value
After purchase: reduce sharing and protect the next owner
Reduce collection now
- Open the car’s privacy and connectivity menus and disable optional location, personalization, voice, analytics and driving-score features you do not need.
- Review the manufacturer app and web account; remove unused drivers, revoke remote access and cancel unwanted trials or subscriptions.
- Unpair phones and delete contacts, call history, messages and navigation destinations from the vehicle.
- Submit an access or deletion request using the manufacturer’s stated process, and save the response.
- Recheck settings after major software updates, service visits and a change of owner account.
Prepare for sale, lease return or trade-in
Before handing over the vehicle, remove personal profiles, paired phones, contacts, destinations and garage-door credentials; sign out of apps; cancel or transfer subscriptions; and follow the manufacturer’s reset and account-transfer instructions. Ask customer service to remove your account association if the vehicle remains visible in your app. There is no single reset procedure for every model, so use the current manual and the exact account instructions rather than relying on a generic factory-reset assumption.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Relying on a salesperson’s “it’s optional”
“Optional” may describe a paid subscription, not the data collection needed for emergency or diagnostic functions. Ask which data flows continue when the subscription is declined and request the answer in writing.
Assuming a phone setting controls the car
Disabling location permission for the mobile app does not necessarily disable the vehicle’s independent modem. Check the in-car menu and account enrollment separately.
Confusing a privacy dashboard with deletion
A dashboard can hide a trip or stop display without deleting cloud records. Ask whether the action is suppression, de-identification or deletion and which retention exceptions apply.
Ignoring the trial period
A free connected-service trial can enroll the vehicle and begin collecting data before you decide whether to pay. Record the end date and cancel or change settings before renewal.
Assuming a low-tech trim has no connectivity
Emergency hardware, software updates or a built-in modem may exist even without navigation or a hotspot. Verify the vehicle identification number, hardware list and enrollment screen.
Buying an unverified blocker or adapter
There is no evidence that a generic OBD-II accessory, cellular blocker or other add-on will disable a manufacturer’s embedded telematics system across models. Such devices can interfere with safety, diagnostics or legal requirements. Use the manufacturer’s controls and documented privacy-request process instead.
A practical decision rule
Choose the vehicle whose documented data practices match the services you genuinely need. A strong candidate has clear categories, named purposes and recipients, enrollment you can decline, controls that apply to the data you care about, a workable access or deletion process, and a written list of functions that remain available offline. If the manufacturer cannot answer those questions for the exact trim and market, treat that uncertainty as a purchasing disadvantage rather than filling the gap with a brand reputation or a marketing promise.
