Etsy does not identify a single best camera; the right choice depends on your workflow and the kinds of products you photograph.
What camera should I use for Etsy product photos?
Start with the phone or camera you have. Etsy’s Product Photography Checklist allows either and puts emphasis on lighting, steady framing, shot planning, and useful views—not a particular camera model.

A dedicated camera may suit you if you need interchangeable lenses or more manual control over exposure. A phone may be simpler for quick, well-lit shots. The available Etsy guidance does not provide controlled tests comparing phone and camera results, so there is no evidence-based universal winner. - For straightforward, well-lit products: Use your phone or camera and prioritize a clean background, soft light, and sharp focus.
- For small details: Try your phone’s macro mode or a camera’s suitable macro lens. Check lens compatibility before purchasing equipment.
- For greater manual control or lens flexibility: A dedicated camera may fit your process, but it also adds setup and equipment costs.
- For blur caused by movement: Improve stability first with a tripod or a sturdy surface; replacing the camera may not address the underlying problem.
An Etsy article from 2015 quoted Canon camera specialist Wasim Ahmad discussing larger sensors as an upgrade option. That is historical expert context, not a current camera comparison or a recommendation of a specific model. Etsy’s article on elevating photography also quotes jewelry designer Charlotte Park describing her natural-light approach as “sun-kissed glow lighting.”

Can I use my phone for Etsy photography?
Yes. Etsy lists a smartphone as suitable equipment. Use the main camera, keep the phone steady, and move closer rather than using digital zoom if zooming reduces image quality. Tap or otherwise set focus on the product, and check that small details are sharp before taking the full set of listing photos.
If you are photographing jewelry or another tiny item, use macro mode if your phone offers it. For a dedicated camera, Etsy’s Getting to Know Your Camera explains camera modes and the exposure controls: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. White balance also matters because it affects how colors appear. You do not need to master every setting to start; consistent light and focus are more useful first checks.

What lighting do I need for product photography?
Use soft, consistent light so shoppers can see the product without harsh shadows or misleading color. Etsy’s photography checklist suggests a sunny window, a sheer curtain to soften the light, and a reflector to brighten the shadow side. Outdoors, overcast conditions can also reduce harsh shadows.
Pick a setup that fits your space
- Window light: A low-cost starting point when you have reliable daylight. A sheer curtain softens direct sun; a reflector helps fill shadows.
- Light box: A practical option for small products when sunlight is unavailable or inconsistent. It can help provide a repeatable indoor setup.
- Three softboxes: Etsy lists three softbox lights as another way to work without sunlight and control shadows. They require more space and setup than a window or compact light box.
Avoid using camera flash for product shots, and do not mix daylight with artificial light sources in the same scene: mixed color temperatures can make accurate color harder to achieve. Whichever setup you choose, keep it consistent across a listing so the images look like they belong together.

How do I take better pictures of products to sell online?
Plan a set of images that answers the questions a shopper cannot resolve from the title and description alone. Use several clear angles and keep props from hiding the item or making it unclear what is included.
- Show the whole product. Begin with a clean, well-lit view that makes the item easy to recognize.
- Add detail views. Photograph workmanship, texture, materials, closures, or other features that matter to the buyer. Use macro mode or a suitable macro lens when needed.
- Show size and scale. Include a useful scale reference or a view that communicates dimensions. Make sure the reference does not obscure the product.
- Include a lifestyle view when useful. Show how an item looks in context, while keeping the product itself easy to identify.
- Use a group view only when it clarifies what is included. Arrange multiple pieces so shoppers can tell what they are seeing and what they will receive.
For a clean, repeatable look, use a simple backdrop such as seamless paper or fabric in an uncluttered color that complements the product. A tripod compatible with your phone or camera can help reduce movement; if you do not have one, use a stable shelf or another sturdy surface.

How should I edit and crop Etsy listing photos?
Crop for a clear composition while keeping the product’s appearance truthful. Etsy advises choosing images that work across multiple aspect ratios, so leave some room around the subject rather than composing so tightly that a crop could cut off an important feature.
Make restrained edits to brightness, contrast, and color so the image is clear but still resembles the real item. Etsy’s photo-editing guidance cautions that filters or manipulation can distort how a product appears. Check edited photos on more than one screen because displays can render color differently.

What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy’s Seller Handbook article Creating Listings That Convert recommends a minimum of 2000 pixels on the shortest side at 72 PPI. This is Etsy’s recommendation, not a guarantee of better listing performance. Check Etsy Help for current technical requirements before uploading, because requirements and display behavior can change.
Etsy’s current image requirements and best practices say the first image should be landscape or square, and that its shape determines the shape of following photos. The page lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and HEIC as supported file types; animated GIFs and transparent PNGs are not supported. It also notes that automatic rotation depends on information in the image file.
Use a clear, well-lit first photo and provide multiple high-quality images. Etsy cautions that a collage as the first photo may make it difficult for shoppers to tell what is for sale. Review the listing on Etsy after uploading to check that the first image and subsequent crops display as intended.
