What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose Firefox on desktop if your first priority is a documented switch for the browser’s own AI features. Mozilla’s AI Controls can block current and future Firefox AI features and prompts, remove entry points, and delete downloaded on-device models. If your priority is selectively reducing Google-connected services rather than switching off every built-in AI feature, Vivaldi exposes the clearest set of individual controls. Brave is a Chromium-based alternative with vendor-described changes to Google communications, but hiding its AI entry point is not the same as removing the feature.
None of these choices can stop an AI tool built into a website, and Firefox’s switch does not stop an independently installed extension from calling an external AI service. Treat “AI off” and “Google services reduced” as separate goals, then choose the browser whose documented controls match your threat model and device.

Start with the control you actually need
“A browser that blocks AI features and Google services” can mean several different things. You may want to remove a browser vendor’s chatbot, prevent local models from being downloaded, stop searches and typed suggestions from being sent to a provider, or reduce background services such as Safe Browsing, DNS fallback, autofill and account integration. No single setting covers all of those categories.

What “blocking AI” does—and does not—cover
Browser-integrated AI
A browser-integrated feature is code or a service supplied as part of the browser, such as a built-in assistant, summarizer or on-device model. A browser can often remove its buttons and disable its calls. Firefox’s documented AI Controls are the clearest example: when a feature is blocked, its entry points are removed; for an on-device feature, a model that Firefox already downloaded is removed as well. Mozilla says the preferences persist across updates: “Once you set your AI preferences in Firefox, they stay in place across updates.” (Mozilla announcement)
Website AI
A page can run JavaScript, call an online model or display an AI assistant regardless of the browser’s own AI setting. Blocking Firefox’s integrated features, Vivaldi’s privacy options or Brave’s interface elements does not block that site-provided functionality. You need site-specific permissions, content blocking or an organisational network policy for that separate problem; those controls are not established by the sources for this comparison.
Extensions and add-ons
Firefox explicitly warns that its AI Controls do not prevent an extension from independently using an external AI service. Review installed extensions separately and remove or disable any extension that sends page content or typed text to a service you do not want to use.
Search engines and machine-learning tools
Mozilla separates AI Controls from search-provider settings and tools such as Google Lens. Turning off Firefox’s browser AI therefore does not automatically change your search engine or disable Lens. Configure those functions in their own settings when your aim is to reduce Google-connected requests. (Mozilla’s AI Controls documentation)

Firefox: the strongest documented central AI switch
What the control covers
Firefox’s AI Controls let you block current and future AI features and prompts, or manage features individually. Blocking removes the places in the interface where the feature can be launched. If an on-device model has already been downloaded, blocking that feature removes the model. Mozilla describes the controls and their scope in its support article and product announcement: Firefox AI Controls and Mozilla’s announcement.
- Central policy: a single AI Controls area can block the browser’s current and future built-in AI features.
- Granular policy: individual features can be allowed or blocked when you want one capability but not another.
- Local-model cleanup: a blocked on-device feature has its already downloaded model removed.
- Persistent preference: Mozilla says the choice remains in place across updates.
How to configure it
- Use a current Firefox desktop release and open the browser’s Settings.
- Open the AI Controls section. The exact placement can change between releases, so use Settings search if the section is not visible.
- Choose the central option to block Firefox’s AI features, or open the individual feature controls for a selective policy.
- Confirm the change, then restart Firefox if the release requests it. Check that the related buttons or menu entries have disappeared.
- Separately review Search settings, Google Lens and installed extensions. They are not governed by the AI Controls switch.
Trade-offs and boundaries
Blocking a Firefox AI feature means giving up that feature’s functionality and visible launch points. It does not make Firefox a Google-free browser, change your search provider automatically or prevent a website from offering its own AI. It also cannot police an extension that makes its own external request. Those boundaries are material if your concern is data leaving the browser rather than simply hiding a button.
When Firefox is the right choice
Pick Firefox desktop when you want a documented, browser-level off switch and are comfortable configuring search, Lens and extensions as separate tasks. The announcement describes the AI Controls section for desktop; verify that your operating system and installed edition expose the setting before relying on it, especially if you use a mobile build.
Vivaldi: granular controls for named Google services
What Vivaldi documents
Vivaldi’s privacy settings identify several Google-provided or Google-connected components and explain their defaults and consequences. The documentation is a service-by-service checklist, not a claim that every form of browser or website AI is blocked. (Vivaldi privacy settings)

| Setting or integration | Documented default | What disabling changes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Safe Browsing | Enabled by default | Turning it off removes that browser safety lookup; the source does not state an alternative protection or performance result. |
| Google DNS fallback | Enabled by default, configurable | Disabling it prevents the documented fallback; name-resolution behavior then depends on your remaining network configuration. |
| Google-provided autofill | Available as a Google-provided feature | Turning it off removes that integration, so the corresponding autofill behavior may no longer be available. |
| Bundled Google extensions | Present as documented integrations | Disabling them removes the associated extension functionality. |
| Google account services | Configurable | Disabling them prevents signing in with a Google account through those services. |
| Chrome Web Store integration | Configurable | Disabling it prevents adding extensions from that store. |
| Search suggestions | Disabled by default | Suggestions can be enabled by field and search engine; when enabled, typed text is sent to the selected search engine. |
How to reduce Google connections in Vivaldi
- Open Vivaldi’s Settings and select Privacy.
- Review each Google-related service listed there rather than treating one checkbox as a universal block.
- Leave Google Safe Browsing and DNS fallback enabled if you rely on those protections; disable them only after deciding what will replace their function.
- Turn off Google account services if you do not want Google-account sign-in. Expect that account-based features will stop working.
- Turn off the Web Store integration if you do not want extension installation from that store. Install extensions through another supported route only if you trust and understand it.
- Check the search-suggestion controls for every search field. Keep suggestions disabled when you do not want typed text sent to a search engine.
- Save the settings, open a private test tab and verify the behaviors you care about: no suggestions, no account sign-in prompt, or no store-installation path.
What this choice does not prove
Vivaldi’s documented privacy switches do not establish a comprehensive AI-blocking mode. They can reduce specified Google-connected services, but they do not demonstrate that browser AI, website AI or third-party extensions are all disabled. Select Vivaldi for the granularity of its Google-service controls, not for an unsupported promise of being Google-free.
When Vivaldi is the right choice
Choose Vivaldi desktop when you want to decide separately which safety, DNS, autofill, account, extension-store and suggestion services remain active. Write down the functions you still need before disabling anything: removing Safe Browsing, account login or store access has a direct usability or safety cost.
Brave: Chromium foundation with documented modifications
Understand the architecture
Brave is built on Chromium. Brave says it modifies Chromium’s communication with Google services, proxies some communications through Brave servers, replaces Google-based sync and removes selected privacy-related Chromium APIs. Its own description should be read as a list of modifications, not as evidence that every Google-origin component or the Chromium foundation has been eliminated. (Brave privacy features; Brave’s Chromium deviations)

Hide versus disable
Brave’s help documentation distinguishes hiding a feature in the interface from fully disabling it. Hiding an icon or entry point changes what you see; it does not by itself demonstrate that the underlying feature is absent or unable to run. For some desktop features, Brave documents Group Policy as the route for complete disabling. (Brave feature controls)

- Open Brave’s settings and locate the controls for the feature you want to remove, such as the Leo entry points.
- If you only hide the icon, record that the action is cosmetic and verify whether the feature remains reachable elsewhere.
- For a documented full-disable requirement, use the desktop Group Policy method described by Brave and have an administrator apply it.
- After policy application, restart the browser and check all menus, side panels and context actions where the feature could appear.
- On Android and iOS, do not plan on Group Policy: Brave states that this administrative mechanism is unavailable on those platforms.
When Brave is the right choice
Brave suits readers who need Chromium compatibility and accept Brave’s vendor-described privacy changes. It is not the clearest choice when your non-negotiable requirement is a single, documented switch that blocks all browser AI entry points. On mobile, the desktop Group Policy limitation is particularly important.

A practical selection framework
Choose Firefox when AI control is the deciding test
Use Firefox desktop if your acceptance test is: “Can I centrally block the browser’s own current and future AI features, remove their entry points and clear local models?” Then separately configure search, Lens and extensions. This is the most direct match for a browser-level AI opt-out documented by the vendor.
Choose Vivaldi when service-level Google reduction is the deciding test
Use Vivaldi desktop if your acceptance test is: “Can I decide individually whether Safe Browsing, DNS fallback, Google autofill, account services, bundled extensions, Web Store access and search suggestions are active?” Before switching off a service, identify the safety or convenience function you will lose.

Choose Brave when Chromium compatibility is essential
Use Brave if sites, extensions or workflows require Chromium behavior and you prefer the privacy changes Brave documents. Confirm whether you need a hidden interface element or a true administrative disable; those are different outcomes, and the latter may not be available on your phone or tablet.

Verification checklist after changing settings
- AI entry points: inspect the toolbar, new-tab page, context menus, side panels and selection menus for the feature you intended to block.
- Local models: on Firefox, confirm that a blocked on-device feature no longer retains its downloaded model.
- Search suggestions: type a non-sensitive test phrase and verify whether suggestions appear; if they do, check every search field and engine.
- Account prompts: test a sign-in flow only after deciding whether account services should remain available.
- Extension installation: verify that disabling a store integration produced the expected loss of store access, without weakening your extension-supply-chain standards.
- Safety lookups: if you disabled Safe Browsing or DNS fallback, document the replacement protection and test that your network still resolves and filters as intended.
- Mobile limits: repeat the check on each platform. A desktop policy or setting may not exist on Android or iOS.
- Website and extension AI: inspect installed extensions and the sites you use; browser-level controls do not cover their independent AI requests.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking a hidden icon for a disabled feature
Interface cleanup is not proof of code removal. Brave’s documentation makes this distinction explicit. If your requirement is enforcement rather than appearance, use the documented desktop policy route where available and verify every alternate entry point.
Assuming one AI switch governs search
Firefox separates AI Controls from search providers and Google Lens. A browser can have its built-in AI disabled while still using a Google search engine or Lens. Treat those as separate configuration decisions.
Calling a browser “Google-free” after disabling a few services
Vivaldi’s own settings page lists multiple Google-connected services and their defaults. Turning off some of them does not establish that all Google-origin code, requests or website content are gone. Describe the exact services you disabled instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDisabling safety services without a replacement
Safe Browsing and DNS fallback have operational roles. If you turn them off for privacy reasons, decide how you will handle malicious-site warnings and name resolution before making the change; otherwise the trade-off is not controlled.
Forgetting extensions and websites
Firefox’s AI documentation specifically excludes extensions that call external AI services, and all three browsers can display AI supplied by websites. Audit those layers separately rather than expecting a browser switch to enforce a whole-device policy.
Keeping the decision current
Record the browser version, operating system, enabled services and the date you verified them. Recheck the vendor documentation after major updates because labels, defaults and available controls can change. Firefox’s announcement says its AI preference persists across updates, but persistence does not mean the surrounding search, extension or website behavior is covered. Vivaldi’s defaults and Brave’s policy support are likewise product details that should be confirmed for the release and platform you actually use.
