What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For most people, the right starting point is one browser profile per identity or role. Use separate Edge or Chrome profiles for work, school, client, and personal logins; use Firefox profiles when you want fully separate browser setups; use Firefox Multi-Account Containers when tab-level separation is enough. If the boundary must include Windows settings, files, and applications—or the computer is shared—use separate Windows user accounts and then add browser profiles inside them.
Start with the boundary you actually need
“Multiple accounts” can mean two Gmail addresses, several client dashboards, a work identity alongside personal browsing, or different people sharing one PC. Those cases need different boundaries. A browser profile separates browser state; a Windows account separates a much larger part of the device.

| Option | Best fit | What is separated | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Edge profiles | Work and personal contexts, especially with Microsoft work identity or Windows integration | Profile-specific settings and data; Edge supports Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft accounts, and domain accounts | Review sync and organization policies; profiles remain inside the same browser and Windows user context |
| Chrome profiles | Several Google, work, or personal contexts, particularly where Chrome is already standard | Separate profile preferences and browser state; enterprise controls cover sign-in, sync, and profile separation | Managed policies can change sign-in or sync behavior; verify the account attached to each profile |
| Firefox profiles | Distinct browser setups with broader separation than a container tab | Mozilla describes profiles as a way to keep work and personal browsing separate | Switching profiles is a more deliberate workflow than changing a tab or container |
| Firefox Multi-Account Containers | Several site logins in one Firefox profile and one window-based workflow | Separate site contexts within container tabs | Containers are not full profiles; browser-wide settings and data remain in the same profile |
| Separate Windows user accounts | Shared PCs or boundaries that include files, applications, and Windows settings | Each account has its own Windows settings, documents, and applications | Changing users is a broader workflow change than switching browser profiles |
The browser vendors document these capabilities, but this table is not an independent performance or security test. Pick the smallest boundary that matches your real requirement, then use a stronger one when the consequences of mixing data are high.

A profile is a separate browser workspace inside one installation. Its preferences, bookmarks, history, extensions, themes, cookies, and signed-in sessions are associated with that profile rather than with your other profiles. Microsoft states that data associated with one Edge profile is separate from data associated with other profiles in its Edge privacy documentation. Chromium describes multiple Chrome users in similar terms, with separate preferences and state in its multiple-profile documentation.

This is usually better than repeatedly signing out of a single window. A work profile can retain the work account, extensions, bookmarks, and policies you need, while a personal profile retains a different set. Clear names and colors reduce the chance of posting from the wrong account or saving a password in the wrong context.
Profiles are still part of the same browser installation and the same Windows user session. They organize browser data; they do not create a complete barrier against somebody who can use your unlocked Windows account, inspect local profile files, or control the computer.
Choose the right browser workflow
Microsoft Edge profiles
Edge is a natural choice when your organization uses Microsoft identities or Windows-integrated services. Microsoft documents support for Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft accounts, and domain accounts in its Edge identity and configuration guidance. A profile can hold its own settings, bookmarks, extensions, themes, and preferences, so a work profile does not have to look or behave like a personal one.
To create one, open Edge’s profile control, choose the option to add or set up a new profile, and sign in with the identity intended for that workspace if your organization permits sign-in. Give the profile a role-based name such as “Work” or “Client A,” select a recognizable color, and open a new window for it. The exact labels can change between Edge releases or under administrator control.
Before importing bookmarks, installing extensions, or enabling synchronization, confirm that the profile shows the intended account. If the PC is managed, an administrator may preconfigure identities, disable features, or enforce a particular sync configuration.
Chrome profiles
Chrome profiles suit people who keep several Google, work, or personal contexts and organizations that standardize on Chrome. Each profile has separate preferences and state, while enterprise administrators can control sign-in, sync, and profile-separation behavior. Google’s policy documentation explains those controls at Set Chrome policies for users or browsers.

Use Chrome’s profile menu to add a profile, then associate only the intended account with it. Label profiles by purpose rather than by a vague name such as “Profile 2.” Keep work bookmarks and extensions in the work profile, and check the account indicator before opening a sensitive service. Chrome’s labels and setup screens vary by release and by organizational policy, so follow what your current build displays.
Firefox full profiles
Firefox profiles are the better fit when you want distinct browser setups rather than merely another signed-in tab. Mozilla’s profile-management guidance describes using multiple profiles to keep work and personal browsing separate.
Create a profile for each broad context and keep its extensions, bookmarks, history, and preferences focused on that context. Firefox profile management is more profile-oriented than the quick profile switchers in some Chromium-based browsers, so expect to switch deliberately when changing roles. Use full profiles when you want separate browser-wide configuration; do not choose them merely to open one additional account on a single site.
Firefox Multi-Account Containers
Containers solve a narrower problem: separate site logins within one Firefox profile. A work container and a personal container can hold different sessions for the same service while you remain in one browser setup. Mozilla lists Containers alongside full profiles as an option for work and personal contexts.
Choose Containers when tab-level separation is enough and you value a single window workflow. Choose full profiles when you need different extensions, bookmarks, history, themes, or other browser-wide state. Containers do not turn one Firefox profile into separate Windows accounts, and they are not equivalent to isolated browser installations.
Separate Windows user accounts
Windows accounts are the correct level when people share a PC or when the boundary includes documents, applications, and Windows settings. Microsoft’s Windows account guidance describes those areas as belonging to each user account.

Create or use a separate Windows account for each person or role where appropriate, sign out or switch users before handing over the computer, and then create browser profiles inside each Windows account if that person still needs multiple identities. This adds a full session switch, but it matches a requirement that browser profiles cannot meet.
A decision process that works on Windows
1. List the identities and the data they touch
Write down each account or role: personal, employer, school, client, volunteer, or a second identity on the same service. Note whether it uses separate bookmarks, extensions, saved passwords, downloads, or documents. Two Gmail addresses that only need separate sessions are a smaller problem than an employer account alongside confidential personal files.
2. Decide whether the boundary is tab-level, browser-level, or device-level
- Tab-level: Choose Firefox Multi-Account Containers when the main requirement is separate site sessions in one profile.
- Browser-level: Choose Edge or Chrome profiles, or full Firefox profiles, when each identity needs its own browser data and settings.
- Device-level: Choose separate Windows accounts when files, applications, and Windows settings must be separated, or when different people use the PC.
3. Check whether an organization controls the device
On a work or school computer, policy can determine which browser, identity, sign-in method, and sync options are allowed. Edge provides administrative identity controls, and Chrome Enterprise provides policy controls for sign-in, sync, and profile separation. Ask the administrator before changing a managed profile or moving work data to a personal sync account.
4. Choose a naming scheme before creating profiles
Use names that describe the role and, when useful, the organization: “Personal,” “Work,” “School,” or “Client—North.” Assign distinct colors or avatars. Avoid names based only on creation order because they become ambiguous after you add more accounts.
5. Create the profiles and test the boundary
- Open the browser’s profile control and add the profile or, in Firefox, use its profile-management workflow.
- Sign in only with the account intended for that profile. If the browser offers to import data, review the selection before accepting it.
- Open a new window for the profile and check its name, color, account avatar, bookmarks, extensions, and saved sessions.
- Visit a service used by more than one identity and confirm that the expected account is displayed before taking any action.
- Repeat the check in every profile, then close windows from the previous identity before starting sensitive work.
Interface labels and available controls vary by browser release and organizational configuration. Treat the visible profile name and account indicator as a deliberate checkpoint, not as decoration.
Sync is a separate decision from local separation
Creating profiles can keep data separate on one Windows installation, but signing in may also synchronize browser data to an online account or across devices. Edge’s privacy documentation and Google’s Chrome policy guidance describe sync and identity controls.

For each profile, verify:
- Which account is currently signed in.
- Whether sync is enabled.
- Which categories are synchronized, such as bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions, settings, or open tabs.
- Whether the account is personal, school-managed, or employer-managed.
- Whether organizational policy requires a particular sync location or disables selected categories.
Do not assume that using one sync account in several profiles will preserve separate cloud data. The account and sync configuration govern what can be shared across devices and sessions. If work data is involved, keep it in the organization-approved profile and configuration, even when a personal arrangement would be more convenient.

What they are good at
- Keeping website cookies and routine sign-ins associated with a role.
- Separating bookmarks, history, extensions, themes, and preferences.
- Reducing accidental use of the wrong account when profiles are clearly labeled.
- Making repeated work/personal switching quicker than signing out of every site.
What they do not establish
- A complete security boundary from another person who can use the same unlocked Windows account.
- Protection from someone who can inspect local browser-profile files or control the device.
- Isolation of Windows documents, installed applications, or system settings.
- A guarantee that an employer, school, or administrator cannot apply policy to the browser or device.
Use a Windows account when the threat or privacy requirement includes the rest of the device. Use normal Windows locking and sign-out practices regardless of which browser option you select.
Common scenarios and the best fit
Two Google or Outlook accounts for one person
Create one browser profile per identity. Keep each account signed in only in its labeled profile and use separate windows when working side by side. Containers can work for this in Firefox if you want one profile and one window; full profiles are easier to reason about when the identities also need different bookmarks or extensions.
Work and personal browsing on one personal PC
Use separate Edge or Chrome profiles, or separate Firefox profiles if you need distinct browser setups. Review sync before adding employer data, and keep the work identity in the approved configuration. A browser profile is sufficient for organization and accidental-session control, but not for separating personal files from someone who can use the same Windows account.
Several client accounts with different extensions and bookmarks
Use one profile per client or role when each context needs its own extensions, saved sessions, bookmarks, or history. Give every profile a clear client label and color. Avoid relying on containers alone if a client-specific extension or browser setting must never appear in another context.
A shared family or public computer
Use separate Windows user accounts for each person where appropriate. Each user can then create browser profiles for their own work and personal identities. Sign out or switch users rather than leaving a sensitive account open in an unlocked session.
Best Value
A managed work device
Follow the administrator’s approved browser and identity setup. Edge and Chrome can expose controls that force or restrict sign-in, sync, and profile separation. If a setting is unavailable or keeps reverting, treat that as a policy decision and ask the administrator instead of attempting to bypass it.
Troubleshooting mixed accounts and confusing sessions
The wrong account appears on a website
Confirm the active profile name and avatar first. Close the tab, open the service in the intended profile window, and check the account indicator before continuing. If the session remains wrong, sign out of that site only within the affected profile or clear its site data there; do not erase data from every profile unless that is intentional.
Bookmarks, passwords, or extensions appeared in another profile
Check whether data was imported during profile creation or synchronized from an account already used elsewhere. Review the profile’s sync account and categories, remove unintended imports, and keep future imports limited to the selected profile. On a managed device, policy may control which categories can be changed.

Profiles keep changing after a browser update
Record the browser version, profile name, signed-in account, and any organization message shown in the settings page. Browser interfaces and policy controls change over time, so consult the current vendor documentation or your administrator rather than following an old menu path.
A work profile cannot enable or disable sync
Assume an organization policy may be enforcing the setting. Edge identity controls and Chrome Enterprise policies can restrict sign-in and synchronization. Ask the administrator which data categories and account are approved.
You need stronger separation than profiles provide
Move to separate Windows user accounts when the requirement includes files, installed applications, Windows settings, or different users. Keep browser profiles inside those accounts for any additional role separation.
A maintenance checklist
- Keep profile names, colors, and avatars distinct.
- Check the active profile before sending messages, uploading files, or changing account settings.
- Review sync account and categories after creating a profile and after major browser changes.
- Keep employer or school data in the organization-approved identity and profile.
- Remove unused profiles only after confirming that needed bookmarks, passwords, and files are backed up or retained in the correct account.
- Lock or sign out of Windows when another person can access the computer.
- Reassess the boundary when a role starts handling confidential files or requires different applications.
Bottom line: match the tool to the boundary
Use separate Edge or Chrome profiles as the default for one person managing multiple identities on Windows. Choose Firefox full profiles when you need distinct browser setups, and Firefox Multi-Account Containers when separate site tabs are enough. Choose separate Windows user accounts when the separation must include documents, applications, and Windows settings or when the computer is shared. In every case, treat sync and organization policy as independent decisions, verify the account attached to each profile, and do not mistake browser organization for a complete device-security boundary.
