Finally compare the complete recurring cost, fair-use rules, equipment, support and any written restoration commitments. A high advertised speed is not useful if the line cannot be installed, slows sharply after a data threshold or lacks the upload and fault response your work requires.
Plans, coverage and contract terms vary by locality and change over time. Use the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) tariff directory to find filed offers for your service area, confirm every detail with the provider, and use TRAI MySpeed measurements rather than a single marketing headline.

1. Check that a connection can actually reach your address
Broadband is a local service. A plan shown online may be limited to particular streets, buildings, exchanges, villages or eligibility categories. Do not select a plan until installation at your complete address has been confirmed.

- Open TRAI’s Know your Tariffs search.
- Select your state or service area and filter by provider, connection type, price or validity as needed.
- Record the plan name, tariff period, advertised and typical speeds, data allowance, taxes, installation fee and equipment terms.
- Ask the provider to verify feasibility at your house, apartment, office or shop—not merely your PIN code.
TRAI’s directory includes national and regional providers, but a listing is not a guarantee that a port, fibre route, pole or last-mile radio link is available at your premises. Request the confirmation in writing if the connection is important for work.

Confirm practical installation details
- Whether the building owner, society or landlord must approve cabling.
- Expected installation date and any one-time activation, wiring or security deposit.
- Where the optical network terminal or modem will be installed and who supplies power backup.
- Whether the quoted price is monthly, prepaid for a validity period, or subject to taxes and minimum-term conditions.
- What happens if the feasibility survey fails after you have paid an advance.
2. Size the plan for simultaneous use
Choose capacity for the busiest normal hour, not for one phone running a speed test. Count people, computers, phones, televisions, cameras, cloud backups, point-of-sale devices and guests that may be active together. Video meetings and cloud uploads can consume upstream capacity even while others stream or browse.
Use TRAI’s indicative household ranges as a starting point
TRAI’s 31 August 2021 broadband recommendations provide illustrative combinations of connected devices and light, moderate or high use. They are recommendations, not a universal minimum or a guarantee that a particular application will perform well.
| Connected devices | Indicative moderate-use range | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| One to two | 10–50 Mbps | Suitable as a starting range for a small household with ordinary browsing, streaming and calls. |
| Three to five | 50–300 Mbps | Leaves more room for concurrent streaming, work calls, downloads and smart-home traffic. |
| More than five | Above 300 Mbps for moderate and high use in the table | Relevant to busy households or premises with many simultaneous users; actual needs depend on applications and network design. |
These figures come from TRAI’s illustrative table, not observed national performance statistics. A household that rarely uses the connection may be comfortable below the top of a range; a family transferring large files or using several high-resolution streams may need more headroom.
Translate activities into a busy-hour requirement
- Light use: messaging, email, news, school portals and occasional standard-definition video.
- Moderate use: several simultaneous video streams, web applications, online classes, video meetings and routine downloads.
- High use: multiple high-resolution streams, frequent large uploads, cloud backup, software distribution, security-camera feeds or many staff working concurrently.
Write down the busiest combination you expect and choose a tier that leaves margin for growth. A plan that is adequate today can feel slow after adding a remote worker, a 4K television, cameras or a cloud backup schedule.
3. Compare typical download and upload performance
“Up to” is a ceiling. Compare the typical download and upload speeds declared in the tariff, and ask how they are measured. Upload speed affects video-conference quality, sending design or accounting files, cloud synchronization, live selling and off-site camera storage.
Rank #2
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Understand TRAI’s speed rule
TRAI states: “TRAI does not prescribe any minimum download or upload speed.” Providers must disclose typical download and upload speeds in their tariff offerings, and at least 90% of measured test samples must meet or exceed the declared typical speed. This is a disclosure and measurement requirement, not a promise that every device will see the advertised maximum inside your home.
Read the declared typical figures alongside the advertised maximum. If a plan lists a high download rate but a much smaller upload rate, check that the asymmetric service suits your work. For a small business that sends large files or hosts services, a faster upload tier—or a separately specified business connection—may matter more than a headline download number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Separate line performance from Wi-Fi performance
Walls, distance, interference, old client hardware and router placement can make a good broadband line appear slow. When checking performance, test near the router and, where possible, over Ethernet. Repeat the test at busy and quiet times. A wired result that is close to the declared typical speed points to a Wi-Fi coverage problem; a consistently low wired result is evidence to raise with the provider.
4. Read the “unlimited” and fair-use conditions
Unlimited usually describes the billing model, not unlimited full-speed data. Ask four separate questions before ordering:
- How many gigabytes are included at the stated full speed during each billing or validity period?
- What exact threshold triggers a policy change?
- What speed applies after the threshold?
- Can additional data be purchased, and what charges or validity rules apply?
TRAI requires providers to clearly state the fair-use limit and the post-limit speed; excess data can attract charges under the applicable tariff terms. Save the tariff sheet, order summary and fair-use wording. If several people stream, update devices or back up photographs, estimate monthly consumption rather than assuming the word “unlimited” removes all limits.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Estimate data use conservatively
- Add the expected monthly use of streaming, meetings, operating-system updates, game downloads, cloud backup and security cameras.
- Include guests and automatic device updates, which are easy to overlook.
- Compare the total with the full-speed allowance, leaving a buffer for unusually busy months.
- For a business, ask whether the threshold is measured per account, per location or per user and whether unused data expires.
5. Calculate the complete monthly and first-year cost
Compare offers on the amount you will actually pay, not the base number in a banner. Put recurring and one-time amounts in the same worksheet.
| Cost item | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Recurring tariff | Is the amount monthly or prepaid for a stated validity, and are taxes included? |
| Installation and wiring | Is activation free, discounted or refundable if feasibility fails? |
| Equipment | Is the modem, optical terminal or router rented, sold, refundable or tied to the account? |
| Data overage | What are the post-threshold speed and any extra-data charges? |
| Optional services | Are calling, television, cloud storage or entertainment bundles useful to you, or merely increasing the price? |
| Exit or relocation | Are there notice, early-termination, deposit or relocation charges? |
Calculate the first-year total as installation plus equipment and deposits plus twelve months of recurring charges, adjusting for prepaid validity and promotional periods. Compare like with like: a cheaper plan with a rented router, low post-threshold speed and costly installation may cost more than a higher-priced plan with the needed equipment included.
6. Treat business continuity as a separate requirement
A home plan can be fast yet unsuitable for a business that loses revenue when service fails. Before signing, request written answers on continuity and support.
Questions for a small business
- Is there a stated uptime, repair or restoration commitment, and is it contractual or only an objective?
- How do you open a fault ticket outside office hours?
- Is there a defined escalation path and a ticket number?
- What restoration target applies to fibre cuts, equipment failure and power-related outages?
- Are upload capacity, static addressing, inbound access or other IP requirements available and documented?
- Can the account be supported by a named business desk rather than a general queue?
- Are service credits available for missed commitments, and what exclusions apply?
The reviewed official material does not establish a universal Indian broadband SLA or prove that every business-labelled plan is better. Ask for the actual service schedule attached to your order. Keep a second connection, mobile hotspot or other contingency if an outage would stop payments, customer support or production.
TRAI identifies business establishments among contexts that may need high-use broadband. BharatNet separately lists business-to-business infrastructure offerings, but eligibility and terms are specific to each displayed offer and location.
7. Check technology, router and in-home coverage
Connection technology affects installation, fault patterns and the equipment you need. Fibre-to-the-home generally uses an optical network terminal and a router; other local options may use copper, cable or fixed wireless. Ask which technology will be installed at your address, not just which technology appears in the company’s general advertising.

Decide whether you need a separate Wi-Fi router
A Wi-Fi router is an optional physical purchase, not a substitute for a faster broadband tier. TRAI discusses Internet access through Wi-Fi and recommends secure authentication, while a BharatNet offer uses “Fibre Home WiFi” in its plan name. Before buying anything separately, confirm:
- Whether the provider supplies a router or optical terminal and whether it remains the provider’s property.
- Which connection type, authentication method and Ethernet speed the router must support.
- How many rooms and floors need coverage and whether wired access points are practical.
- Whether the provider will troubleshoot a customer-owned router.
- That the wireless network uses a strong password and current security settings.
Do not pay for equipment you cannot use with the provider’s installation or that covers less area than your home or office requires.
8. Use real measurements when you already have service
Existing subscribers should measure more than once, at different times and from more than one device. Use TRAI MySpeed, the regulator-recommended consumer measurement route, and note the date, time, connection type and whether the test was wired or wireless.

- Run a wired test near the router when possible.
- Repeat during your busiest period and during a quieter period.
- Run a Wi-Fi test in the rooms where work or streaming occurs.
- Record download, upload and latency results, along with any disconnects.
- Compare repeated wired results with the tariff’s declared typical speeds.
- Give the provider the timestamps and ticket numbers if results remain poor.
One test cannot establish long-term ISP reliability. A pattern across days and times is more useful, and a weak Wi-Fi result should first be isolated from the broadband line with a wired test.

Other offers on the page have different speeds, thresholds, bundled services and eligibility. These two examples are not a nationwide benchmark and should not be compared with an address-verified local plan until taxes, installation, equipment and post-threshold conditions are known.
10. Build an address-specific comparison table
Once at least two offers are feasible at the same address, fill in every column below. A blank answer is a reason to ask another question, not a reason to assume the best case.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Field | Offer A | Offer B | What to verify |

11. Apply the choice to common situations
Small household
Start within TRAI’s one-to-two-device moderate-use range, then increase capacity if several people stream, attend classes or work simultaneously. Prioritize reliable in-home coverage and a sufficient full-speed allowance over an unused maximum.
Large or heavily connected home
Count every active device, including televisions, cameras and backups. A tier in the three-to-five-device range may be a starting point, while households with more than five active devices and high use should examine tiers above 300 Mbps and verify upload capacity.
Home-based professional
Prioritize upload speed, video-call stability, cloud access, support response and a backup connection. Check whether the plan’s terms permit the work you conduct and whether a business service offers written commitments you actually need.
Small shop or office
List staff, point-of-sale terminals, cameras, guest Wi-Fi and cloud applications. Request a written fault-escalation process and restoration target, document the account holder and keep a continuity option for outages.
12. Avoid these common buying mistakes
- Choosing by maximum download alone: compare typical download and upload figures and your busiest simultaneous use.
- Assuming “unlimited” means no slowdown: locate the fair-use threshold and post-limit speed in the tariff.
- Comparing a promotional price with a standard price: calculate the first-year cost after the promotion ends.
- Ignoring feasibility: obtain address-level installation confirmation before paying.
- Blaming the ISP for every Wi-Fi problem: run a wired test and check router placement and coverage.
- Relying on one speed test: measure repeatedly at different times and preserve the results.
- Assuming a business label guarantees continuity: read the actual written SLA, exclusions and escalation terms.
- Buying a router prematurely: confirm supplied equipment, compatibility and support boundaries first.
13. A final ordering checklist
- Search your state and service area in TRAI’s tariff directory.
- Confirm feasibility at the complete installation address.
- Count simultaneous users, devices and high-bandwidth activities.
- Use TRAI’s illustrative ranges only as a starting point, then add headroom for growth.
- Compare declared typical download and upload speeds.
- Write down full-speed data, fair-use threshold, post-threshold speed and overage charges.
- Add taxes, installation, deposits, equipment, validity and promotion expiry to the cost calculation.
- For business use, obtain written support, escalation, restoration and any IP commitments.
- Verify router supply, compatibility, security and coverage needs.
- Save the tariff and order confirmation, then test the installed service repeatedly with TRAI MySpeed.
The right plan is therefore the one that is installable at your address, keeps up with your busiest simultaneous use, remains usable within its data policy, and provides support appropriate to the consequences of an outage. Recheck those conditions whenever you move, expand the office or the provider changes the tariff.
