The right Breville espresso machine depends less on the badge or headline price than on the work you want to do every morning. Choose the Bambino Plus if you want a compact brewer with automatic milk texturing and are willing to buy a grinder separately. Choose the Barista Express for an integrated grinder and a hands-on espresso routine. Choose the Barista Express Impress when you want the integrated grinder but need help with dosing and tamping. Choose the Barista Touch Impress when touchscreen instructions and hands-free milk texturing are worth paying for.
Those are workflow differences, not a guaranteed taste ranking. Breville’s product pages describe the features; they do not establish that the more expensive or more automated machine makes better espresso. Start by deciding how much grinding, puck preparation and milk work you want to learn, then compare the total setup rather than the machine’s sticker price.

Decide which parts of espresso you want to do yourself
A portafilter espresso machine turns several separate tasks into one routine: grind coffee, measure a dose, distribute it in the basket, tamp the puck, lock in the portafilter, extract, steam or texture milk, and clean the parts that contacted coffee and milk. Breville’s four machines place assistance at different points in that chain.
Grinding
The Bambino Plus does not list an integrated grinder on its cited US product page. If you use whole beans, add a separate grinder to the budget and to the counter space calculation. The Barista Express, Barista Express Impress and Barista Touch Impress integrate a conical burr grinder, so those machines combine grinding and brewing in one appliance.

Puck preparation
The standard Barista Express leaves dosing and tamping to you. The Barista Express Impress adds intelligent dosing and assisted tamping. The Touch Impress adds assisted puck preparation as part of its guided workflow. This assistance is most valuable when you want repeatability without spending as much time learning distribution and tamp pressure.
Milk
The Bambino Plus offers automatic milk texturing with selectable temperature and texture, while still allowing manual texturing. The Barista Express and Barista Express Impress use manual microfoam texturing. The Touch Impress provides hands-free milk texturing. If you mostly drink black espresso, this difference matters less; if you make several milk drinks, it can determine whether the workflow feels enjoyable or cumbersome.
Compare the four machines by workflow

Choose the Bambino Plus when compactness and easier milk drinks come first
The Bambino Plus (BES500) is the simplest choice when you already own a grinder, plan to buy one separately, or primarily want a small espresso brewer. Breville lists a 54 mm portafilter and claims a 3-second ThermoJet warm-up. The three-second figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured result, so treat it as an indication of the intended quick-start design rather than a guarantee for every outlet, dose or drink.
What the Bambino Plus removes
- It can automate milk temperature and texture selection, reducing the need to learn steam-wand technique immediately.
- Its compact format can suit a smaller kitchen than an all-in-one grinder machine.
- It can still be used manually when you want to learn milk texturing instead of relying on the automatic setting.
What it leaves to you
You still need a way to grind coffee for the best use of fresh whole beans. A grinder is a separate purchase, and its footprint, adjustment range and retention become part of the setup. If you already have a capable grinder, the Bambino Plus can avoid paying for a second one inside the espresso machine. If you do not, compare the combined cost and counter space with an integrated-grinder model before deciding that the machine itself is cheaper.
Current displayed price caveat
When the cited US page was accessed in 2026, it displayed a $399.95 sale price against a $499.95 regular price and showed the machine out of stock. Both price and inventory are volatile; verify the live page before purchase. The displayed promotion should not be treated as a permanent price.

- MANUAL HAND-TEXTURED MICROFOAM: The powerful steam wand on this cappuccino maker and latte machine is designed to quickly turn milk into smooth, flavorful microfoam for creating latte art at home
- PRECISE DOSE GRINDING: Integrated precision conical burr grinder on bean-to-cup espresso machine grinds on demand to deliver correct amount of freshly ground coffee directly into portafilter for your preferred taste with any roast of bean
- WATER PRESSURE: Low pressure pre-infusion gradually increases pressure at the start and draws out all the flavors evenly during the extraction for a balanced-tasting espresso, latte or cappuccino
- RECEIVE 2 FREE BAGS OF SPECIALTY COFFEE: Included when you purchase and register any Breville coffee machine; T&Cs apply
- PRECISE ESPRESSO EXTRACTION: Digital temperature regulation (PID) delivers water at precisely the right temperature, so espresso coffee maker allows for precise espresso extraction
Choose the Barista Express for an integrated grinder and a traditional learning path
The Barista Express (BES870) is the straightforward all-in-one option. Breville describes an integrated precision conical burr grinder with dose control and a manual microfoam texturing workflow. You do not need a separate grinder, but you do need to learn how grind size, dose, distribution, tamping and milk technique affect the result.
Who benefits from the Express
- Buyers who want one appliance for grinding and brewing rather than two machines.
- People who see dialing in espresso and steaming milk as part of the hobby, not as friction to eliminate.
- Households that want manual control without the assisted dosing and tamping system of the Impress.
What to expect as a beginner
The first adjustment is usually grind size. If the coffee runs too slowly, grounds may be too fine; if it runs too quickly, they may be too coarse. The machine’s manual workflow means you will change one variable at a time, observe the flow and taste, and repeat. That learning curve is a feature for an enthusiast, but it can feel like unnecessary work if you want a repeatable drink with minimal experimentation.
Choose the Barista Express Impress when dosing and tamping are your bottlenecks
The Barista Express Impress (BES876) keeps the integrated-grinder and manual-milk approach but adds help where many new users struggle: putting a consistent amount of coffee into the basket and tamping it evenly. Breville lists 25 grind settings, intelligent dosing, assisted tamping and correction of the next dose.
How the intelligent dosing claim works
Breville says, “The dose is automatically calculated based on the last grind, ensuring it’s ready for the next use.” In practical terms, the machine uses the previous grind as a reference for the following dose rather than asking you to start from an entirely manual estimate each time. It does not remove the need to choose an appropriate grind setting, keep coffee and equipment consistent, or evaluate the extraction.
What remains manual
Milk texturing remains manual, so you still operate the steam wand and learn the position, air introduction and swirling needed for microfoam. The assistance is concentrated on puck preparation, not on turning every drink into a one-button operation.

Choose the Barista Touch Impress when guided operation is worth the premium
The Barista Touch Impress (BES881) is the most automation-oriented option in this comparison. Breville lists a touchscreen with step-by-step guidance, assisted puck preparation and hands-free milk texturing. That combination targets the buyer who wants help deciding and repeating the process rather than learning every adjustment immediately.
What the touchscreen changes
Instead of remembering a sequence of settings, you follow on-screen instructions for the selected drink. Guidance can reduce the number of decisions a beginner faces at the counter, especially in a household where several people make coffee. It does not establish that the espresso will taste better than an Express or Express Impress; it changes how much instruction and manual intervention the machine provides.
What hands-free milk texturing changes
Hands-free texturing can be the deciding feature for frequent cappuccinos, lattes and similar drinks. It shifts steam-wand control away from the user, while the machine’s assistance handles the milk step. If you mainly drink straight espresso, the premium may provide less practical value than a separate grinder or better beans.

Build a realistic budget around the complete workflow
Comparing only the machine prices can produce the wrong answer. Count the equipment and effort required to make the drinks you actually plan to serve.
If you choose the Bambino Plus
- Add a separate grinder if you buy whole beans.
- Allow counter space for both the grinder and the espresso machine.
- Decide whether automatic milk texturing replaces the need to practice with a steam wand.
- Confirm that the grinder can make espresso-fine adjustments and that its dosing routine fits your tolerance for measuring and cleanup.
If you choose an integrated-grinder model
- You save a separate appliance, but the grinder is part of the machine’s long-term workflow.
- Choose the Express for maximum manual involvement, the Express Impress for dosing and tamping help, or the Touch Impress for touchscreen and milk automation.
- Leave room for beans, a knock box or waste container, cups and cleaning supplies even when the grinder is built in.

Match the machine to your skill level
You are new to espresso and want the fewest decisions
Start with the Touch Impress if touchscreen guidance and hands-free milk texturing solve problems you know you will have. The Bambino Plus is another low-friction route for milk drinks, provided you are comfortable choosing and using a separate grinder. The difference is where the assistance lives: the Touch Impress guides more of the workflow, while the Bambino Plus concentrates convenience on warm-up and milk texturing.

You are new but want to learn the craft
The Barista Express offers a clear manual path. You learn to adjust the grinder, dose the basket, tamp and steam milk. The Express Impress is a compromise for learners who want to practice extraction and milk while reducing the frustration of inconsistent puck preparation.
You already understand espresso variables
Choose based on the task you want to delegate. An experienced user may prefer the Bambino Plus with a favored separate grinder, or the Barista Express for an integrated setup with direct control. The Impress models make sense when speed and repeatability matter more than doing every preparation step by hand.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use the correct basket and grind approach
The Bambino Plus instruction manual distinguishes between basket types. Single-wall baskets are intended for freshly ground whole beans. Dual-wall baskets can be used with pre-ground coffee. That distinction matters because the basket and grind method must match the coffee format you choose.
Freshly ground whole beans
Use a single-wall basket with an espresso-capable grinder. Adjust grind size gradually while watching the flow and evaluating taste. Grounds that are too fine can slow the flow; grounds that are too coarse can allow water to pass too quickly. Change one variable at a time so you can identify what improved or harmed the extraction.

A dual-wall basket is the documented option for pre-ground coffee on the Bambino Plus. It can simplify the setup when you do not own a grinder, but it does not turn a basic kitchen grinder into an espresso grinder. For any model with an integrated grinder, use the machine’s grind and dose controls as the starting point, then adjust as your coffee and recipe require.

Plan the first setup and daily routine
- Check the model and power requirements. Verify the exact US SKU, available counter depth and clearance for the water tank, hopper or touchscreen before opening the box.
- Choose your coffee format. Decide whether you will use freshly ground beans or pre-ground coffee. On the Bambino Plus, match that choice to the single-wall or dual-wall basket described in the instruction manual.
- Set the grinder or prepare the dose. On an integrated-grinder machine, begin with the manufacturer’s controls and make small grind adjustments. With the Bambino Plus, use the separate grinder’s espresso range and dose consistently.
- Prepare the puck. The Express requires manual dosing and tamping. The Express Impress and Touch Impress provide assisted puck preparation, but still require you to follow the machine’s prompts and keep the basket clean.
- Extract and observe. Watch whether the flow is unusually slow or fast. Record the coffee, grind setting and dose so the next adjustment is deliberate rather than random.
- Texture milk only if the drink needs it. Select automatic or hands-free texturing where available, or use the steam wand manually on the Express and Express Impress.
- Clean immediately. Empty coffee residue, rinse the portafilter and basket, wipe the milk-contact surfaces and follow the machine’s cleaning cycle instructions.
Budget for water filtration and maintenance
The Bambino Plus manual lists a water-filter holder and filter, cleaning tablets and descaling powder among the maintenance supplies. Exact replacement compatibility depends on the machine SKU, so match every filter or tablet to the model before ordering. The same principle applies to accessories for the integrated-grinder machines: use the documentation for the exact model rather than assuming that a part for one machine fits another.
Routine tasks
- Rinse the portafilter and basket after brewing so oils and grounds do not accumulate.
- Wipe the steam wand immediately after milk texturing and purge it according to the manual.
- Keep the grinder area free of stale grounds; retained coffee can affect the next dose.
- Replace the water filter and run cleaning or descaling procedures at the intervals and with the products specified for your model and water conditions.
Why maintenance belongs in the buying decision
Automation reduces some operating steps but does not remove cleaning. A machine that texts you through a recipe still needs clean water paths, a clean milk system and a dry, unclogged grinder area. If you dislike maintenance, choose the workflow with the fewest components you are willing to clean consistently rather than paying for features you will avoid using.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying the cheapest machine without pricing the grinder
The Bambino Plus price does not include a grinder on the cited product page. Add that purchase before comparing it with an integrated-grinder model.

Assuming more automation means better espresso
Touchscreen guidance, assisted tamping and automatic milk texturing change effort and consistency of operation. The available manufacturer descriptions do not prove superior flavor or durability, so choose automation for the work it removes, not for an unsupported taste promise.
Choosing a manual steam wand when nobody wants to practice
The Express and Express Impress require manual milk texturing. If most drinks contain milk and the user does not want to learn steaming, the Bambino Plus’s automatic option or the Touch Impress’s hands-free system may be a better workflow fit.
Ignoring kitchen layout
A separate grinder needs its own footprint, while an integrated machine needs room for beans, water access and cleaning. Measure the space with the machine’s access panels and hopper or tank clearance in mind, not only the width shown in a listing.
Treating a sale price as permanent
The cited US pages showed promotional prices and, for the Bambino Plus, an out-of-stock status at the time accessed. Check the live Breville listing and authorized seller inventory immediately before buying.
A practical decision checklist
- Separate grinder acceptable? If yes, the Bambino Plus remains in contention; if no, choose an integrated-grinder model.
- Want to practice milk texturing? Choose the Barista Express or Barista Express Impress. If not, consider the Bambino Plus automatic system or Touch Impress hands-free system.
- Need help making a consistent puck? Favor the Barista Express Impress or Touch Impress over the standard Express.
- Need on-screen instructions? The Touch Impress is the model in this group with touchscreen, step-by-step guidance.
- Black coffee most of the time? Put more weight on grinder access, puck preparation and counter space than on milk automation.
- Milk drinks for several people? Give greater weight to automatic or hands-free texturing and to how quickly each user can repeat the workflow.
- Have a strict budget? Compare the machine plus grinder, accessories and maintenance supplies, and treat displayed promotions as temporary.
Bottom line
Buy the Bambino Plus for a compact brewer and easier milk texturing when a separate grinder is acceptable. Buy the Barista Express for an integrated grinder and hands-on learning. Buy the Barista Express Impress for integrated grinding with dosing and tamping assistance. Buy the Barista Touch Impress for the most guided workflow and hands-free milk texturing. None is proven here to produce better-tasting espresso than the others; the sensible choice is the one whose level of manual work, space and total setup cost matches how you actually make coffee.
