Choose by the jobs you expect it to handle, then compare blending results, usable capacity, cleanup, controls, dimensions, noise, stability, and warranty—not wattage alone. A personal blender better suits portable single servings; an immersion blender is convenient for blending soup in its cooking pot and takes less storage space.
Choose the blender type that matches your routine
Blenders differ in what they are designed to do. A conventional countertop model is aimed at everyday blending, while high-performance models target a broader range of demanding tasks. Personal and immersion blenders solve different problems: serving size and portability, or blending directly in a pot.

| Blender type | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional full-size countertop | Smoothies, shakes, and less intensive everyday blending. | May be less capable with demanding ice and frozen-drink tasks than high-performance models. Compare independent performance evidence and the warranty. Consumer Reports’ 2025 buying guide describes the category. |
| High-performance full-size countertop | A wider range of tasks, including purées and more demanding blending. | Consumer Reports’ 2025 guide gives a category price range of $300–$700; this is not a current quote for a particular model. Some models may include a 10-year warranty, while budget models typically cover one year, according to the guide. Check the exact model’s price and warranty. |
| Personal blender | Single-serving smoothies and drinks to take along. | The mixing cup commonly doubles as a travel jar, but this category is not intended for tough blending jobs. |
| Immersion blender | Puréeing soup directly in its cooking pot, making sauces, and saving storage space in a small kitchen. | It is less powerful than premium countertop blenders and cannot handle every job a traditional blender can. |
These category distinctions and trade-offs are described in Consumer Reports’ blender buying guide. No single type is best for every kitchen: the right choice depends on batch size, where you blend, and how demanding your recipes are.

Consumer Reports’ 2025 buying guide lists blender motors from 300 to 2,200 watts or more, but cautions that higher wattage does not necessarily mean better performance. Blade design and container shape affect how ingredients move through the blender. As Cindy Fisher, who oversees Consumer Reports’ blender test labs, puts it: “The design of the blades and container plays a role, too.” The quotation appears in the publication’s Vitamix-versus-Blendtec comparison.

When you can compare test results, look for performance on icy drinks, ice crushing, and purée, as well as convenience, durability, and noise. Consumer Reports describes testing across those areas; that is a description of its testing, not a result from this article. Its buying guide also identifies capacity, controls, cleaning, stability, dimensions, and warranty as useful criteria.
- Blending results: Check evidence for the ingredients and textures you make, especially frozen drinks if those are a regular task.
- Capacity: Match the usable jar size to the amount you blend at once, not just the number of servings you hope to make.
- Cleanup and controls: Consider whether the parts and controls will be manageable after everyday use.
- Fit and operation: Check the appliance’s dimensions against counter and cabinet space, along with noise and stability.
- Warranty: Read the terms for the exact model rather than relying on category-level expectations.
Check capacity, storage, and cleanup before buying
A blender can have ample capacity yet be awkward to use if it does not fit beneath your cabinets or is difficult to clean. Measure the available counter and cabinet clearance, and consider where you will store the jar and any accessories. For a personal blender, also check whether the cup size suits your usual serving. For an immersion blender, consider whether its shaft and attachments can be stored conveniently.

Use product specifications and, where available, comparative testing to assess these practical details alongside blending performance. Consumer Reports includes convenience, durability, and noise in its test descriptions, not just the texture of the finished blend.

Do not assume every blender or container handles hot liquids the same way. Read the owner’s manual for the specific model and jar before blending hot soup. For example, the cited Vitamix 780 owner’s manual says not to start hot liquids above speed 1 and instructs users to secure the lid and lid plug before operating. Those directions apply to that manual’s model, not automatically to other blenders.

Container compatibility can matter too. Vitamix says its Ascent hot-soup program is disabled when using the 8-ounce bowl or 20-ounce cup because those smaller containers do not have vented lids for releasing steam. This is a model-family example, not a universal rule. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the blender and container you plan to use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Load smoothie ingredients according to the blender’s guidance
For Vitamix blenders, the manufacturer recommends adding liquids first, followed by dry ingredients, leafy greens, fruits and vegetables, and then ice and frozen ingredients. Vitamix says this order helps move ingredients toward the blades and can prevent air pockets. It also recommends starting at low speed and quickly increasing to high for many blends, subject to the recipe and model manual. Treat this as manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule for every blender. See Vitamix’s smoothie instructions.

A practical decision checklist
- List your regular jobs. If smoothies, soup, and varied recipes matter, start with a full-size countertop blender. Favor a personal blender when portability and single servings dominate, or an immersion blender when you mainly want to purée soup in the pot.
- Estimate batch size and measure the space. Check jar capacity, counter footprint, and cabinet clearance before settling on a model.
- Compare relevant performance evidence. Look for results on smoothies or icy drinks, ice crushing, and purée, alongside noise, convenience, and durability where those results are available.
- Review ownership details. Check cleaning, controls, stability, the full dimensions, and the exact warranty terms.
- Read the manual for hot liquids. Confirm the instructions for both the blender and the container you intend to use; do not generalize another model’s settings.
