Start by checking what the fund actually holds: spot bitcoin or ether, futures contracts, or a mix. Then compare its full costs, custody arrangements, benchmark, and tracking—both against net asset value (NAV) and at the share price you would trade. A product’s name, low headline fee, or SEC listing approval alone does not establish what exposure it provides or make it safe.
In U.S. listings, “ETF” is often used broadly for crypto exchange-traded products. Some spot products are trusts or other ETPs, not registered investment-company ETFs. Read the current prospectus and official performance materials for the specific fund before comparing it.

First, find out what the product holds
A Bitcoin or Ethereum fund’s exposure can come from directly holding the cryptocurrency, holding futures contracts, or combining exposures. These structures are not interchangeable: they can differ in tracking, costs, operational arrangements, and what the fund owns.
Spot holdings
A spot product holds the underlying asset with a custodian. Check the prospectus for the asset held, custodian, reference index, and how the fund values its holdings. A spot product still has custody, market, and fund-structure risks; direct ownership of the coin is not the same as owning its exchange-traded shares.

Futures exposure
A futures fund uses contracts rather than directly holding the cryptocurrency. Contract replacement, or “rolling,” can affect results relative to spot prices; the fund may also rebalance its target exposure. For example, the ProShares Bitcoin & Ether Equal Weight ETF’s September 26, 2025 summary prospectus says, “The Fund does not invest directly in bitcoin or ether.” It describes an equal-weight Bitcoin and Ether objective pursued primarily through futures, with monthly futures replacement and monthly re-establishment of equal weights. Those details apply to that fund, not to crypto exchange-traded products generally. Read its summary prospectus.
Combined Bitcoin and Ether products
A combined name does not tell you whether a product holds the coins directly or uses futures. Look for the investment strategy, target weights, and rebalancing schedule. A combined fund can still be a concentrated cryptocurrency exposure rather than a broadly diversified investment.

Compare costs beyond the headline fee
Check the gross and net expense ratios, any fee waiver or reimbursement, and when it expires. Also look for trading, financing, brokerage, and spread costs. A quoted operating expense ratio does not necessarily include every cost borne by the fund or investor.
One dated illustration: the ProShares summary prospectus dated September 26, 2025 reported 1.03% total annual operating expenses before waiver, including 0.08% in other expenses identified as interest expense and futures commission merchant fees. After the described waiver, it reported 0.95% annual operating expenses; the prospectus stated that the waiver terms ran through September 30, 2026. It also said transaction and financing costs were not reflected in the expense table. These are disclosures for that fund and date, not a market-wide average or a current quote for every investor. Check the prospectus for its stated terms.

- Compare gross and net expenses, not just a displayed management fee.
- Note the waiver amount and expiration date; do not assume a waived fee is permanent.
- Check whether the strategy incurs futures, financing, or transaction costs outside the expense table.
- Include brokerage commissions and the bid-ask spread in the cost of buying or selling shares.
Inspect custody and the benchmark
For a spot product, identify the custodian and read what the disclosure says about control of assets, segregation, subcontractors, insurance limits, and procedures for disruptions or losses. Do not treat a named custodian or insurance statement as proof that losses are impossible; details and limits are fund-specific.
For example, Grayscale’s BTC product disclosure names Coinbase Custody and the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (XBX). A separate Bitwise Bitcoin ETF annual report for the year ended December 31, 2025 identifies Coinbase Custody Trust Company as bitcoin custodian and BNY Mellon as cash custodian, administrator, and transfer agent. Find the exact index or reference rate the product uses and how it is calculated, including the pricing time. Two products tracking a similarly named asset may use different benchmarks or valuation methods, so compare the methodology rather than relying on the label.
Understand why returns may differ from Bitcoin or Ether prices
For a spot product, its holdings and liabilities inform NAV, while the exchange price of its shares can trade above or below NAV. Fund expenses and liabilities can make NAV returns differ from the benchmark; premiums or discounts, spreads, and commissions can make an investor’s market-price return differ further. Grayscale’s disclosure notes that shares are bought and sold at market prices, may trade above or below NAV, and that brokerage commissions reduce returns. Review the product disclosure.
Make like-for-like comparisons: match the same start and end dates, compare NAV total returns with the product’s stated index, and separately inspect market-price returns and premium/discount history. For a futures strategy, account for contract rolls and any rebalancing rather than treating its results as a direct measure of spot-price performance.
Use a consistent comparison checklist

Before acting, use the latest prospectus, fee schedule, official fact sheet, benchmark methodology, and current exchange trading information.
