To choose a Bitcoin ETF, first confirm that it holds Bitcoin directly rather than using futures or options, then compare its current fee, custody disclosures, and trading costs. No single number—especially the expense ratio or trading volume—tells you which fund is cheapest or easiest to trade. Use current filings and comparable market data, and treat every figure as dated.
First, check what the fund actually holds
“Bitcoin ETF” is often used informally for several exchange-traded products, but their strategies can differ. A spot Bitcoin product holds Bitcoin directly for the fund; a futures product gets exposure through futures contracts, and an options-based product may use a different strategy again. These structures can have different risks and tracking behavior. Read the fund’s investment objective and principal strategies rather than relying on its nickname. The SEC-filed prospectus discussing these distinctions is available here.

For a spot fund, also identify the benchmark or reference rate used to calculate net asset value (NAV). Check how the benchmark is constructed and what pricing window it uses: two funds can report different NAVs because their reference methodologies differ.

Ongoing fund fee
Record the current expense ratio or management fee from each fund’s latest prospectus, along with any fee waiver’s end date and exclusions. Note other disclosed expenses where applicable. A temporary net fee and another fund’s gross fee are not an apples-to-apples comparison unless you account for the waiver.
For context, Grayscale’s Bitcoin Mini Trust fact sheet published April 23, 2026, reports a 0.15% management fee and lists assets and holdings as of March 31, 2026. That is one issuer’s figure, not evidence that it is the market’s lowest current fee. See the fact sheet.
Trading costs
The fund fee does not include the cost of executing your own buy or sell order. Check your broker’s commission policy and the fund’s bid-ask spread—the gap between the best displayed buying and selling prices. A narrow spread generally means less immediate trading friction, though the price you receive can still change while an order is open.
Rank #2
When possible, compare dollar trading volume as well as share volume: shares of differently priced funds are not equivalent units. Consider a limit order and compare activity during active market hours; neither practice guarantees a particular execution price.
Use volume as a clue, not a verdict on liquidity
Compare trading activity over the same period and in the same units, then inspect spreads and premiums or discounts to NAV. High volume does not guarantee a narrow spread, a trade at NAV, or favorable execution for your order size. Fund assets and trading history add context, but they do not establish future liquidity, safety, tracking quality, or suitability.
Rank #3
A Grayscale comparison published March 10, 2026, using Grayscale and Bloomberg data through February 28, 2026, reported average daily trailing-30-trading-day volume of 5,666,453 shares for BTC and 77,335,236 shares for IBIT. It also reported dollar volume and average bid-ask spread; share counts alone cannot establish which is easier or cheaper for a particular investor to trade. The comparison was labeled for investment professionals and is an issuer comparison, not a neutral current ranking. Its dated figures should not be treated as current market data.
Check premiums and discounts to NAV
A fund share’s exchange price can differ from the value of the fund’s Bitcoin per share. Compare market price with NAV over a consistent period, looking at both the average and the range. Check whether a source reports an absolute average deviation or a signed premium/discount; those measures are not interchangeable.

Creations and redemptions help keep market prices aligned with portfolio value, but interruptions can weaken that arbitrage mechanism. A summary prospectus filed with the SEC on July 16, 2026, warns: “A Spot Bitcoin ETP may suspend the issuance of shares at any time which will impact the price of shares of a Spot Bitcoin ETP, resulting in significant difference (premium/discount) between the Spot Bitcoin ETP’s market price and its net asset value.” Read the prospectus for the risks described for the specific product.

Custody is handled for the fund; it is separate from your brokerage account and any personal Bitcoin wallet. In the latest prospectus and, where relevant, the statement of additional information, identify the named Bitcoin custodian, any additional custodian, and any prime execution agent that may hold Bitcoin. Then review the disclosed consequences if a provider fails, is hacked, or stops servicing the fund. A custodian’s name alone is not a safety rating.
The same July 16, 2026 SEC-filed summary prospectus states: “Spot Bitcoin ETPs are subject to custodian risk including if the custodian fails to provide services as required or terminates the custodian agreement.” Grayscale’s March 31, 2026 fact sheet, for example, identifies Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC as custodian and Coinbase, Inc. as prime execution agent for the Bitcoin Mini Trust; verify service providers in current filings because arrangements can change. A hardware wallet is an alternative way to hold Bitcoin directly, not a way to custody shares of an exchange-traded fund.

- Bitcoin price risk: Exchange-traded shares do not remove the volatility of Bitcoin or the possibility of losing money.
- Pricing and tracking risk: A benchmark may not track Bitcoin prices across all markets, and fund performance can differ from the price an investor sees elsewhere.
- Operational and cybersecurity risk: Disruptions, security events, or service-provider failures can affect fund operations or asset value.
- Different legal protections: The SEC-filed disclosure says spot Bitcoin ETPs are not registered as investment companies under the Investment Company Act of 1940. A listing on an exchange and securities-law filings do not mean that every protection available to a registered investment company applies.
These are product risks, not problems solved by selecting a fund with a lower fee or higher volume. Review the current prospectus for each candidate’s own risk disclosures.
A practical comparison checklist
- Match the exposure: Confirm spot, futures, options, or another strategy in the investment objective and principal strategies.
- Compare the benchmark: Record the reference rate and its pricing methodology and window.
- Write down recurring charges: Capture the current fee, whether it is gross or net, waiver terms and end date, and other disclosed expenses.
- Measure trading friction: Compare bid-ask spreads and same-period share and dollar volume; check your broker’s commissions.
- Review NAV deviations: Compare premiums and discounts over the same period, using the same definition.
- Check service providers and scale: Note custodians, any execution agent, assets, and fund history from current documents, without treating scale as a guarantee.
- Date every figure: Use the latest prospectus for fees and custody, and a consistent current market-data source for trading measures.
The available numerical examples above are dated through February or March 2026, while the SEC risk disclosure is dated July 16, 2026. They do not provide a synchronized, neutral comparison of all U.S. spot Bitcoin ETPs as of October 7, 2026, so they cannot establish today’s cheapest or highest-volume fund. Refresh each candidate’s figures before comparing.
