Choose a U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP), often called a spot bitcoin ETF, by comparing its ongoing costs, benchmark and net tracking, share-trading conditions, and custody disclosures separately. The available information does not establish a current cheapest, most liquid, or best-tracking fund, so a defensible choice requires up-to-date figures for the specific funds you are considering. The wrapper can make bitcoin exposure simpler to access through a brokerage account; it does not remove bitcoin’s price risk or the product’s own risks.
What you own—and what you still risk
A spot bitcoin ETP holds bitcoin in a trust, and its shares represent a beneficial interest in the trust’s assets. The structure is intended to spare investors the operational work of acquiring, holding, and trading bitcoin directly. In return, shareholders hold an exchange-traded security rather than bitcoin they control themselves, and the trust’s expenses and liabilities affect returns.

On January 10, 2024, SEC Chair Gary Gensler said, “While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse bitcoin.” The SEC’s listing action also did not endorse the products’ disclosed custody arrangements. Treat an exchange listing as permission to trade the shares, not as a guarantee about bitcoin or a fund’s service providers.

Compare the candidates on the same terms
Build a dated comparison from each fund’s latest prospectus and from market data observed under conditions relevant to your own trade. Keep the four main tests distinct: a low sponsor fee does not establish good tracking, and a fund’s bitcoin holdings do not establish that its shares will trade with a narrow spread.
| Comparison | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Current annual sponsor fee, effective date, waiver terms and end date, applicable thresholds, and expenses charged to the trust. | A promotional or waived rate can differ from the ongoing rate, while other expenses can also affect returns. |
| Benchmark and tracking | Exact reference-rate name; NAV and benchmark returns over the same dates; calculation method and period. | Products may use different reference rates, and expenses and liabilities affect net fund returns. |
| Share liquidity | Bid–ask spread, trading volume, and premium or discount to NAV, with observation date and time, market hours, and trade size. | Trading conditions change and may not match the conditions for your brokerage account or order. |
| Custody and operations | Named bitcoin custodian and material custody and service-provider disclosures in the latest filing. | These are product-specific operational risks; listing approval is not a custody endorsement. |
| Structure | Current creation and redemption process and other operating terms disclosed by the issuer. | Mechanics can differ among funds and change over time. |
How to evaluate fees and waivers
Start with the latest prospectus, not a launch announcement or an old comparison chart. Record the annual sponsor fee, when it applies, whether a waiver is in effect, when it ends, any asset threshold or other condition, and which ordinary expenses the sponsor pays versus which may be charged to the trust.
For example, an Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF filing from 2026 reports a 0.25% annualized sponsor fee after its initial waiver expired. That is a term disclosed for one issuer’s fund, not evidence of the lowest current rate across the market. Because fee schedules and waivers can change, confirm the latest filing for every candidate before comparing them.
Rank #2
If you expect to hold for a longer period, distinguish the waiver period from the rate that applies after it expires. A headline rate alone can make two funds look more alike—or more different—than their actual terms warrant. Do not call one fund cheaper unless the rates, effective dates, waiver conditions, and relevant expenses have been checked on a comparable basis.
Check the benchmark and measure net tracking
Read each fund’s objective and identify its reference rate by its exact name. “Tracks bitcoin” is too vague for a useful comparison: funds can use different benchmarks, and their returns are reduced by expenses and other liabilities.
Rank #3
The cited Invesco Galaxy filing names the Lukka Prime Bitcoin Reference Rate and describes an objective of reflecting spot bitcoin performance less expenses and other liabilities. Bitwise’s August 1, 2025 prospectus names the CME CF Bitcoin Reference Rate – New York Variant for BITB. These are issuer-specific examples, not a complete or necessarily current list of fund benchmarks.
To compare performance, use each fund’s NAV returns and its stated benchmark returns over the same dates, then account for expenses. Do not compare one fund’s share-price return with another fund’s NAV return. If you use a tracking-error statistic, state the period and calculation method; without those details, the number is difficult to interpret. The examples above do not establish a current, comparable tracking ranking across issuers.

Assess the liquidity of the shares you will trade
Liquidity is a characteristic of the shares in the market, not simply of the bitcoin held by the trust. Look at the bid–ask spread, trading volume, and whether shares trade at a premium or discount to NAV around the hours and for the order size you expect to use. Check conditions relevant to your brokerage and intended order type; a market order and a limit order do not manage execution in the same way.

These measures can change, and a fund’s daily NAV calculation does not by itself show that its shares have a narrow spread or a deep order book. The available figures here do not support a live comparison of spreads, volumes, or premiums and discounts, so they cannot identify a liquidity winner. Nor should size alone be treated as proof that a fund will always be cheaper to trade.

In the latest prospectus, identify the bitcoin custodian and read how the fund describes its custody arrangements, key control, service providers, and risks from operational disruption. Compare the actual disclosure language; a custodian’s name alone does not establish that two funds have identical controls.
In its 2026 filing, Invesco Galaxy Bitcoin ETF names Coinbase Custody Trust Company, LLC as its bitcoin custodian. That fact applies to the named fund and filing, not to every spot bitcoin ETP. The SEC’s January 10, 2024 statement explicitly said its listing decision did not endorse disclosed custody arrangements, so regulatory listing should not be presented as a guarantee about custody.
Verify creation and redemption terms before relying on old comparisons
Check the latest issuer filing for the fund’s current creation and redemption process and other operating terms. Bitwise’s August 1, 2025 prospectus reported regulatory approval for in-kind creation and redemption as of that prospectus date. That dated, product-specific disclosure is not proof that the same terms apply now or that every spot bitcoin ETP uses the same mechanics.
Make the decision without inventing a winner
- Shortlist funds you can buy through your brokerage. Confirm the product and share class you are comparing rather than assuming all bitcoin-linked exchange-traded products have the same structure.
- Compare the latest cost disclosures. Note the ongoing sponsor fee, waiver expiration and conditions, and relevant trust expenses for each candidate.
- Compare like-for-like tracking data. Identify each exact benchmark and use matching-period NAV and benchmark returns, with the dates and method stated.
- Check execution conditions for your trade. Observe spreads, volume, and NAV premiums or discounts at a relevant time and trade size; record the date and time because these conditions can move.
- Read custody and operating terms. Verify the named custodian and the current disclosures on custody, service providers, and creation and redemption.
Choose based on the trade-offs that matter to your holding period and order, using comparable, current disclosures. No single fee figure, benchmark label, trading-volume observation, or custodian name settles the comparison on its own.
