Choose a biogas-to-hydrogen system by matching a measured, dependable supply of raw biogas to your hydrogen demand and required product specification—not by choosing a reformer from a nameplate capacity alone. Before seeking proposals, define the system boundary, analyze the gas over representative operating periods, and require vendors to show a mass and energy balance, performance limits, and a lifecycle cost for your site.

Can biogas be used to produce hydrogen?

Yes. Biogas can be cleaned and processed in a reforming system to produce a hydrogen-rich stream, which then needs conditioning and purification to meet the intended use. A project therefore involves more than a reformer: gas treatment, process utilities, hydrogen cleanup, and possibly compression, storage, and delivery all affect performance and cost.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) identifies project size, feedstock composition and quality, collection logistics, and local infrastructure as important cost factors for biogas projects. These factors also shape whether a particular biogas-to-hydrogen concept is practical. A site with a nominally large resource may still be a poor fit if the gas supply is intermittent, its contaminants demand extensive treatment, or the required hydrogen delivery infrastructure is unavailable.

Define the hydrogen product and cost boundary first

Before estimating system capacity or comparing proposals, specify what the system must deliver and where the cost calculation ends. “Hydrogen output” is not a complete requirement: a process producing hydrogen at the plant gate is not directly comparable with one that also compresses, stores, or delivers it.

Use the same boundary and assumptions when comparing configurations or quotations. The U.S. Department of Energy’s H2A analysis framework is designed to support consistent lifecycle hydrogen-cost comparisons; it is a methodology, not a site-specific price or a substitute for disclosing project assumptions.

What size biogas reformer do you need?

Size the system against dependable methane supply and the hydrogen demand profile, using measured site data. Digester nameplate capacity or annual feedstock tonnage alone does not establish how much usable gas will be available to a reformer at a steady rate.

Start with the supply profile

Collect raw-gas flow and composition data over periods that represent normal operation and meaningful variation, including seasonal changes where relevant. Compare the dependable methane supply—not just average or peak biogas flow—with the hydrogen demand, expected downtime, and any gas that must be reserved for other site uses.

Ask a vendor to provide a mass and energy balance based on the analyzed gas and your required hydrogen purity, pressure, and availability. The evidence summarized here does not establish a universal methane-to-hydrogen sizing ratio or design yield that applies to every feed gas and system.

Test whether the supply can support the proposed scale

Larger systems can benefit from lower unit capital costs, but scale only helps when feedstock and gas can be collected and delivered reliably and economically. The IEA’s 2020 outlook describes the logistics challenge of securing sustained quantities for larger biogas operations, alongside potential scale economies in plant capital costs. Assess both effects for your site rather than assuming that a larger unit will automatically lower hydrogen cost.

What feedstock and raw-gas data should you gather?

Feedstock labels such as manure, wastewater, or landfill gas are not complete specifications for a reformer. The gas actually reaching the process—and how that gas varies over time—determines the cleaning and operating requirements.

The IEA’s 2025 assessment groups assessed feedstocks into crop residues, manure, biowaste, and woody biomass, and emphasizes local availability and infrastructure. Those broad categories help frame resource availability, but a project developer still needs site-specific gas measurements.

Request representative measurements

  • Raw-biogas flow range and variation over representative operating periods.
  • Methane and carbon-dioxide fractions, including how they change with time.
  • Analysis of sulfur compounds, including hydrogen sulfide, and siloxanes where relevant.
  • Moisture and other contaminants identified by the process designer as important for the proposed equipment.
  • Seasonal supply variation, expected interruptions, and any planned changes in feedstock or site operations.

Use representative samples and document when and where they were collected. A single composition reading cannot describe a variable gas stream or establish the maximum contaminant level a system must tolerate.

Use project examples as context, not feed specifications

The European Commission’s BIO-HYDROGEN project used model biogas containing 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide and investigated catalyst behavior with added hydrogen sulfide. These were project test conditions, not universal feed-gas limits or a recommended specification for a commercial system. The project report also noted that siloxane removal by biofilters had not then been realized in that project; it does not establish that a particular present-day treatment method will or will not work at your site.

Which process stages belong in the system comparison?

Compare complete process configurations on a common feed composition, product specification, availability target, and cost boundary. Gas cleaning and reforming are distinct engineering tasks, followed by hydrogen conditioning and purification; utilities and any delivery equipment should be included when they fall inside the project boundary.

Stage or item What to establish for the proposal Why it affects the comparison
Raw-gas receipt and conditioning Flow range, composition, moisture, contaminants, and feed variability used in the design basis. The system must be sized and specified for the gas it will actually receive, not a generic feedstock label.
Gas cleaning Required treatment steps, media or consumables, replacement assumptions, and contaminant operating limits. Cleaning adds equipment and ongoing costs and can affect uptime and maintenance.
Reforming and utilities Process configuration, heat and power requirements, water needs, and the vendor’s performance basis. Utility demand and operating conditions affect operating cost and the amount of hydrogen produced from the available feed.
Hydrogen conditioning and purification Purity and pressure at the specified delivery point, plus any cleanup stages included. A hydrogen-rich process stream is not necessarily product that meets the end-use specification.
Compression, storage, and delivery Whether each item is included, its design basis, and the point at which the quoted cost ends. Including or excluding these items can make two apparently similar cost figures incomparable.

A 2024 review of biogas reforming surveys process pathways, purification, utilities, and techno-economics. Use it to frame questions, not to presume that one reforming pathway is best for every site. Compare proposed options using the same feed data and assess hydrogen output and purity, tolerance for feed variation and contaminants, cleaning needs, heat and power demand, uptime and maintenance, operating scale, emissions boundary, and installed and operating cost.

What affects the cost of hydrogen from biogas?

A defensible estimate includes the full set of costs within the chosen project boundary, not just the reformer price. The IEA identifies project size, feedstock composition and quality, collection radius, and infrastructure as cost drivers, and notes that biogas projects can have relatively high ongoing operating expenses.

  • Capital and installation: Include process equipment, gas treatment, installation, and site-specific infrastructure or interconnections.
  • Feedstock and gas supply: Include feedstock purchase or gate fees, collection, transport, and any conditioning required before processing.
  • Utilities and consumables: Include steam, heat, electricity, water, cleaning media, and expected replacement of catalysts or other components.
  • Operations and maintenance: Include labor, scheduled service, repairs, and downtime assumptions.
  • Product finishing: Include hydrogen cleanup and, if within scope, compression, storage, and delivery.
  • Financing and lifetime: State the financing assumptions, project life, and operating schedule used to calculate a lifecycle cost.

Disclose the capacity basis, annual operating hours or capacity factor, feedstock price or gate fee, utility assumptions, financing, lifetime, hydrogen purity and pressure, and cost boundary. A lifecycle method such as DOE H2A can help keep comparisons consistent, but the result is only as useful as the site-specific assumptions entered.

How should you interpret published capacity and cost figures?

Published figures can illustrate the range of research and project-development work, but none of the figures below is a current commercial quotation or a universal design benchmark.

Published figure What it describes How to use it
More than 30 feedstock types The breadth of feedstocks covered in the IEA’s 2025 assessment. It is not a count of commercial hydrogen systems or proof that each feedstock is suitable for a particular reformer.
6 kW hydrogen-system target A target described by the European Commission BIO-HYDROGEN project. It is a project-development scale figure, not evidence of a currently available catalog system.
1–2 m³/h biogas-cleaning prototype A biotrickling-filter prototype described by the same Commission project as intended to treat this biogas flow. It is a project prototype figure, not a current supplier rating or quotation.
US$0.27/kWh hydrogen cost and eight-year payback Results reported by Braga and coauthors in a 2013 study under that study’s assumptions. This is a historical, case-specific result, not a current market price or expected payback for a new project.

Likewise, the IEA’s 2025 estimate of approximately 45 billion cubic metres equivalent of biomethane potential at or below prevailing wholesale natural-gas prices concerns global biomethane potential. It is not an estimate of hydrogen-system market size, hydrogen output, or a project-specific cost.

What to include in a project brief or vendor request

Send vendors the same data and requirements so their proposals can be compared on a common basis. A useful brief includes:

  • Project location and available site infrastructure.
  • Raw-gas flow range, composition, contaminant analysis, and seasonal variation.
  • Hydrogen demand profile, required purity and pressure, and expected annual uptime.
  • Available utilities and any site constraints that affect installation or operation.
  • The emissions accounting boundary and whether compression, storage, and delivery are in scope.

Ask each vendor for a guaranteed performance envelope tied to those inputs, a process flow diagram, and a mass and energy balance. Request the cleaning-media and replacement assumptions, maintenance schedule, capital and operating cost breakdown, and warranty and availability terms. Treat a proposal that omits its feed-gas basis or cost boundary as incomplete for comparison.
