How to Choose a Beetle Trap and Lure for Ecological Monitoring

Choose a beetle trap by what you need to sample: pitfall traps measure activity among ground-moving beetles, barrier traps intercept flying beetles, and baited traps can help detect a particular target when its lure and deployment protocol are validated. These methods sample different parts of a community, so none is a universal substitute for the others.

Start with the monitoring question

Decide what a useful result would be before selecting equipment. A survey may aim to detect a known species, compare activity of ground-active beetles between sites, or describe a broader beetle assemblage. Those objectives call for different sampling methods and affect what a capture can tell you.

  • Target-species detection: Use the target species’ validated lure and survey protocol, if one exists.
  • Ground-active beetles: Use pitfall traps, interpreting catches in light of the sampling effort and deployment conditions.
  • Flying beetles or broader assemblages: Consider flight-intercept or window traps; a Malaise trap can also collect flying beetles as part of general insect sampling.

Monitoring guidance emphasizes documenting methods and effort so results can be interpreted and compared. Trap design, placement, habitat, timing, lure, servicing, and sample handling all matter (Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution, “Standards and Best Practices for Monitoring and Benchmarking Insects,” 2020).

Compare trap types by what they sample

Method What it samples Best fit Main tradeoffs
Pitfall trap Beetles moving across the ground Ground-active groups such as ground beetles and rove beetles Setup can be simple, but catches depend on effort and protocol; specimens may need sieving and identification.
Flight-intercept or window trap Flying insects that collide with a barrier Passive sampling of flying beetles, without relying on a target lure Requires a collection system and servicing; in some conservation settings, trapping may cause disturbance.
Attractant or pheromone trap Beetles responsive to a particular lure Detection or monitoring of a target species with a validated lure protocol Species-specific. Lure, spacing, placement, and duration should follow the target protocol.
Malaise trap A broad range of flying insects, including beetles General flying-insect sampling Broad rather than target-specific; a recent beetle study used it alongside other methods, not as a universal replacement.

AHDB says pitfall traps can monitor “ground-active insects, such as ground beetles, rove beetles and spiders” in its field guidance, “How to use traps to monitor insect populations in the field.”

Choose lures for the target, not for “beetles” in general

There is no single general-purpose beetle lure established by these sources. An attractant works only for beetles that respond to it, and official procedures specify different lure combinations for different species.

Japanese beetle detection

EPPO’s 2016 procedures recommend a combined pheromone and floral attractant for Japanese beetle detection surveys. Because the lure can attract beetles from a substantial distance, the guidance says not to use it in buffer zones around known infestations. It recommends a minimum spacing of 200 m between traps in that specific survey context; that distance is not a general spacing rule for other beetles or survey designs. Consult the EPPO PM 9/21(1) guidance for Popillia japonica for applicable procedures.

Emerald ash borer

Purdue’s approved-method page describes different lure combinations and separation requirements for Agrilus planipennis. It also notes morphological identification challenges in Agrilus. Treat the page as target-specific guidance, not as a general lure recommendation, and verify current requirements before conducting a regulated survey (Purdue University CERIS, “Agrilus planipennis – Approved Method Detail”; page notes extend through 2017).

Follow the protocol for setup and servicing

Pitfall traps

As an example of field setup—not a universal recipe—AHDB describes a plastic pot set with its rim level with the ground, containing liquid and a few drops of washing-up liquid, with a cover over it. Its field-lab protocol aimed to check traps after seven days. Use the design, contents, and checking interval specified for your study rather than assuming this example suits every beetle or habitat.

  • Butterfly net outer diameter is about 14" net ring for collection, 32" net depth for avoiding butterflies flying out.
  • Bug catching net telescopic handle extends from 17" to 36", Perfect for adults.
  • Butterfly nets for insect specimen capture, fit to capture different butterfly, dragonfly, bat, fish and other bugs.
  • Professional bat net is much more durable than others.
  • Bird net Easy to carry, easy storage. Quick assembly.

Attractant and barrier traps

Use the target protocol for trap design, lure combination, placement, spacing, deployment duration, servicing, and sample handling. Service intervals vary by method and study design: for example, a 2025 study of post-fire beetle assemblages describes trap-specific sample collection and lure replacement, rather than establishing one schedule for all traps (“Evaluation of sampling methods for characterisation of post-fire beetle assemblages,” Journal of Insect Conservation, 2025).

Keep a consistent record for each trap, including location and habitat, date deployed and retrieved, design, lure, and servicing or sample-handling details. Without those records, differences in catches may be difficult to interpret as ecological differences rather than differences in sampling.

Weigh capture goals against field burden and disturbance

A trap that catches the target can still be a poor fit if it demands more checking than the project can sustain or disrupts the population being monitored. In central Italy, guidelines for monitoring the hermit beetle and closely related species compared two demanding approaches: at least 150 cavity pitfall traps checked every two days from 15 July to 25 August, and 30 black cross-window traps baited with pheromone and checked every two days during the mating period. The guidance reports that the baited window traps could disturb mating activity and were not recommended every year in that context (Maurizi et al., “Guidelines for the monitoring of Osmoderma eremita and closely related species,” Nature Conservation, 2017). These figures describe that target, habitat, and method comparison; they are not general staffing requirements or evidence that one trap type is more efficient for beetles overall.

For another example of study-specific placement, the 2025 post-fire beetle study placed one pheromone trap at least 50 m from other traps. Do not transfer that distance to another species or design.

Confirm identifications before treating captures as detections

A specimen in a trap is not automatically a confirmed record of the target. EPPO recommends laboratory confirmation of suspected Japanese beetles, while Purdue notes identification challenges within Agrilus. Follow the identification and confirmation requirements of the relevant survey protocol, especially when findings may trigger management or regulatory action.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Define the question: target detection, ground-active activity, or broad flying-beetle sampling.
  2. Match the method: pitfall for ground movement, barrier interception for flying beetles, or a validated attractant for a specified target.
  3. Find the target protocol: confirm lure, trap design, spacing, placement, deployment period, servicing, and identification requirements.
  4. Check feasibility and impact: account for check frequency, access, sample handling, and potential disturbance.
  5. Standardize and document effort: record trap and lure details, location, habitat, timing, servicing, and specimen handling.
  6. Confirm the result: use the required identification method before reporting a target detection.
