This U.S.-focused guide compares Sephora, Ulta Beauty, and Amazon on seller transparency, return rules, and support—not on a counterfeit-rate ranking. No retailer policy guarantees that every individual item is authentic. Before buying, check who sells the exact listing and whether that purchase channel lets you return it the way you expect.
Start with the seller and the purchase channel
An app is a storefront, not necessarily the seller. A listing may be sold by the retailer itself, a beauty brand, or a third-party marketplace seller; fulfillment and return rules can also vary by channel. Look at the seller name on the exact product page and at checkout, then identify where the order will be handled if something goes wrong.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises marketplace shoppers to check who helps with problems, what refund and return rules apply, and whether protections cover the seller and item. Marketplace operators can offer different levels of assistance, and some leave disputes, returns, refunds, delivery, or payment issues to buyer and seller. FTC guidance on buying through online marketplaces recommends checking the seller’s identity and contact details, the listing description, return terms, fees, and deadlines.

- Seller: Is it the retailer, the brand, or a third party? Do not assume an item is sold by the app’s owner just because it appears in that app.
- Return path: Can you return it to a store, mail it back, or only start the return in the marketplace where you bought it?
- Refund: Is it returned to your original payment method, issued as store credit, or subject to shipping or processing limits?
- Deadline and condition: Note the exact return window and whether the policy allows opened or gently used beauty products.
- Support: Save the seller’s contact information and the app’s instructions for reporting a problem.
How to judge authenticity without treating reviews as proof
Reviews and star ratings can help you spot recurring concerns, but they do not establish that a beauty product is genuine. The FTC warns that ratings may be fake or misleading. Check recent reviews from more than one source, look for consistent seller identity and contact details, and be cautious when an expensive product is offered at a strikingly low price.

Keep payment and messages within the marketplace’s system when possible, so you do not step outside its stated protections. Save the listing, seller name, order confirmation, and return deadline. If the item appears counterfeit or materially different from its description, contact the seller and the marketplace through their official support routes promptly, and follow the platform’s dispute instructions.
Amazon says its policy requires authentic products and prohibits counterfeit sales; that is a company policy statement, not certification of an individual listing. Amazon also reported that in 2023 it invested more than $1.2 billion and employed more than 15,000 people addressing fraud and abuse, including counterfeits. Those company-reported enforcement figures do not measure the chance that a particular beauty listing is fake. Compare return policies by app and channel
The following policies are U.S.-specific. They are the retailers’ published terms, not an independent audit of product authenticity or of how every return is handled. Confirm the current rules for the exact item and channel before ordering.

What Sephora’s return terms mean in practice
Sephora’s U.S. policy generally allows new or gently used products returned within 30 days for a full refund to the original payment method, subject to proof of purchase and return validation. Eligible Sephora.com orders can be returned free in a store or with a prepaid mail label. The policy says mail returns may take up to 30 days to process, and shipping charges generally are not refunded unless the return resulted from Sephora’s error. Some products are final sale. Check Sephora’s returns and exchanges policy for the current rules.

Do not assume every order shown in a Sephora app follows the same return route. Online, store, pickup, delivery, and TikTok Shop orders have different procedures; marketplace purchases may need to go back through the platform where they were made. Sephora at Kohl’s purchases follow separate Kohl’s procedures. Check the policy for your specific order before choosing a channel.

Ulta’s Guest Services page says DoorDash and Instacart purchases can be returned within 60 days at an Ulta store with the marketplace receipt, for Ulta merchandise credit. TikTok Shop purchases must be returned through TikTok, not at an Ulta store or warehouse. These examples show why “bought from Ulta” is not enough to determine the return process. On resale of returned goods, Ulta states: “Our policy does not allow for the re-selling of used, damaged or expired products.” It says returned products that do not meet its standards are properly disposed of. Choose the app that fits your priorities
- If you value a published return option for gently used products: Sephora’s stated U.S. policy generally accepts new or gently used items within its 30-day window, subject to validation and exceptions.
- If you are ordering through a delivery or social-shopping marketplace: Check the marketplace-specific instructions first. Ulta’s DoorDash and Instacart process differs from its TikTok Shop process; Sephora also separates some marketplace and delivery orders from ordinary online purchases.
- If you are buying from a third-party marketplace seller: Treat seller identity, contact details, item-specific return terms, and deadlines as essential checks. A platform-wide counterfeit prohibition does not verify the product in a particular listing.
Pre-purchase checklist
- Open the exact product listing and note the named seller and who fulfills the order.
- Read the return terms for that item and purchase channel. Confirm the window, condition rules for opened beauty products, return location or shipping method, refund type, and any fees.
- Check recent reviews across sources, but do not use ratings alone as proof of authenticity.
- Save the listing, seller details, receipt, support route, and return deadline.
- Pay and communicate through the marketplace’s official system, then report a suspected fake or misrepresented product promptly through its stated support process.
