How to Choose a Battery System for a Data Center UPS

Choose a data-center UPS battery by starting with the protected critical load and the job the battery must perform, not by choosing a chemistry first. Define the load in the UPS’s units, required ride-through time, redundancy, growth, charging limits, monitoring, maintenance, safety approvals and end-of-life plan. Then compare approved VRLA and lithium-ion configurations using manufacturer runtime data for the exact UPS, battery cabinet and operating conditions. A battery that looks attractive on price or energy density can still be unsuitable if it cannot support the UPS’s DC window, recharge schedule, fault handling or local installation rules.

Start with the UPS duty, not the battery chemistry

A UPS battery is part of a power-protection system. Its purpose is to keep conditioned, no-break power at the critical load while the utility is unavailable and another power source—often a generator—starts, accepts load or the facility performs an orderly shutdown. That duty is different from storing as much energy as possible.

The U.S. Department of Energy Federal Energy Management Program (DOE FEMP) says UPS selection should account for equipment type, capacity and number; required power conditioning; redundancy; and the uptime required during an outage. Those same decisions determine the battery system. Record them before requesting a quotation.

Define the protected load

  • List only the loads that must remain online during the battery interval, separating them from noncritical cooling, lighting or convenience loads that can be shed.
  • Record real power and apparent power in the units used by the UPS manufacturer. Note present load, normal variation, startup currents and planned equipment growth.
  • Identify power factor, harmonics and any nonlinear loads that affect UPS output or battery discharge.
  • State whether the design must support one UPS module, a parallel block, an N+1 arrangement or another redundancy scheme. The battery architecture must preserve the intended redundancy after a module or battery string fails.

Define what “runtime” must accomplish

There is no universal five-minute, ten-minute or fifteen-minute rule. Set a required ride-through interval and specify the event that must occur before it expires: generator acceptance, transfer to another source, load shedding or an orderly shutdown. A short interval may be adequate where a tested generator starts quickly; a longer interval may be necessary where the site has slow starting, fuel-transfer or restart dependencies.

Document the required runtime at the actual critical load, not at the UPS nameplate rating. Include whether the requirement applies at beginning of life only or through the battery’s permitted aging range. Ask the manufacturer and design engineer to state assumptions for temperature, discharge rate, reserve capacity and end-of-life performance.

VRLA versus lithium-ion: compare complete systems

VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid) and lithium-ion are both used for UPS applications. Neither is the universal winner. Compare the approved battery system, cabinet, controls, service plan and site conditions rather than treating chemistry-level claims as guarantees for every product.

Decision factor VRLA Lithium-ion What to verify
Upfront cost Often lower in conventional installations, but the project total depends on cabinets, rooms, labor and monitoring. Usually higher initial battery cost in the comparisons cited by Vertiv. Obtain a project quote including installation, controls, commissioning and spares; no current market-wide price comparison is established.
Footprint and weight Can require more floor area and structural capacity for an equivalent UPS duty, depending on the configuration. Higher energy density can reduce cabinet footprint and weight in some approved designs. Use the selected model’s drawings, shipping weight, floor loading and access path.
Recharge Recharge characteristics may lengthen recovery after a discharge, depending on charger and battery size. Vertiv comparisons describe faster recharge, but actual time is set by the UPS charger, battery configuration and operating limits. Request a recharge curve and confirm that the UPS can deliver the required charging current without reducing redundancy.
Maintenance and monitoring Requires inspection, testing, connection checks and replacement planning. Temperature has a major effect on service life. Includes a battery-management system (BMS); inspection, alarms, communications and service are still required. Assign who reviews alarms, performs tests, stores records and responds to failed modules or strings.
Safety Address electrical energy, fault current, ventilation and room requirements for the installed assembly. Address cell-level protection, BMS controls, thermal events, fire protection, transport and the listed assembly. Confirm current listings and local fire and electrical rules with the manufacturer and authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
Lifecycle and end of life Plan string replacement, recycling and disposal; service life varies with temperature and duty. Longer life is claimed for some products, but warranty, operating limits and replacement economics are product-specific. Obtain warranty boundaries, expected service conditions, replacement method, recycling route and failure-response commitments.

What the cited lithium-ion comparisons actually establish

Vertiv’s June 2017 safety paper describes lithium-ion as having higher energy density, lower weight, faster recharge and higher upfront cost than VRLA in its comparison table. It also describes an integrated battery-management system and says battery monitoring is highly recommended. Those are vendor-published general comparisons, not guarantees for a particular cabinet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Current Vertiv product information presents lithium-ion UPS batteries as smaller and lighter, with longer life and reduced maintenance compared with VRLA. Treat those statements as vendor claims. Check the product’s warranty, load profile, temperature range, charging limits and approved UPS models before assigning a benefit to your project.

Why lithium-ion chemistry still needs an application decision

A 2016 Vertiv technical paper discusses lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) characteristics in data-center service, emphasizing power density, safety, calendar life and short-duration, high-power discharge. That analysis explains why a chemistry can fit a particular UPS duty; it is not a blanket recommendation for every facility or lithium-ion product.

Size the battery with manufacturer configuration data

Nominal amp-hours or kilowatt-hours do not tell you how long a UPS will support a real load. UPS input and DC-window limits, discharge rate, temperature, aging, parallel strings, converter efficiency and reserve settings all affect runtime. Use the UPS manufacturer’s runtime curves or an approved configuration tool for the exact battery arrangement.

  1. Measure and document the load. Record critical kW and kVA, power factor, load variation and planned growth. Use the units and load conditions requested by the UPS and battery manufacturers.
  2. Set the ride-through requirement. State the required duration and what must happen before it ends, such as generator acceptance, source transfer, load shedding or controlled shutdown. Do not substitute a generic industry number.
  3. Identify the UPS configuration. Record make, model, power rating, module count, redundancy, operating mode, supported DC voltage window, charger capacity and approved battery cabinets or strings.
  4. Obtain model-specific runtime data. Request curves or configuration output at the actual load, temperature, battery age assumption and redundancy state. Ask whether the result is beginning-of-life, end-of-life or another basis.
  5. Check recharge and recovery. Confirm the UPS can recharge the selected capacity within the required time while supporting other modules and maintaining the intended redundancy.
  6. Specify controls and service with the hardware. Include battery monitoring, BMS communications where applicable, alarms, inspection, acceptance testing, preventive maintenance, replacement and failure response.
  7. Have the design reviewed. The equipment manufacturer, electrical engineer and AHJ should confirm compatibility, protection settings, installation clearances and code requirements for the actual site.

An illustrative five-minute comparison—not a sizing rule

One Vertiv 2016 example compares LFP and high-performance VRLA for a 500 kVA UPS operating at 0.8 power factor and 90% efficiency. The paper states a 444 kW battery load and a five-minute runtime requirement at beginning of life. In that specific configuration, the LFP arrangement had a footprint 45% smaller and weight 72% lower than the compared VRLA arrangement.

45% smaller footprint and 72% lower weight — Vertiv, 2016. These figures describe one modeled configuration, not a market-wide result, a guaranteed saving or a target that can be applied to another UPS. Obtain new drawings and runtime data for your own load and cabinet combination.

Evaluate space, structural loading and facility constraints

Battery choice can change the room, not just the equipment schedule. Compare cabinet dimensions, service clearances, aisle width, door and lift access, floor loading, seismic requirements where applicable, cable routes and the location of disconnects. A lighter cabinet may simplify structural work, while a larger number of modules can affect access and maintenance time.

Include the space occupied by monitoring equipment, fire-protection components, ventilation or cooling changes, spare strings and replacement staging. Cost the floor area and structural modifications as part of the battery system, because a lower purchase price can be offset by construction work.

Plan maintenance, monitoring and failure response

VRLA responsibilities

VRLA systems need a documented inspection and testing program. Define visual inspection, terminal and connection checks, temperature measurement, impedance or conductance testing where specified, alarm review and string replacement criteria. Keep records by string and cabinet so a deteriorating unit can be identified before it threatens redundancy.

Vertiv’s 2017 safety paper states that VRLA batteries lose 50% of battery life for every 8°C increase in temperature. That is a vendor-published generalization, not a guarantee or a substitute for the selected battery’s temperature-life data. Maintain the manufacturer’s specified environment and ask for service-life curves at the site’s expected temperature.

Lithium-ion responsibilities

Lithium-ion systems use a BMS to monitor and protect cells and modules, but that does not make them maintenance-free. Establish alarm thresholds, communications paths, firmware or configuration control, inspection intervals, sensor checks and procedures for an isolated or failed module. Confirm what the UPS displays, what the BMS reports separately and how alarms reach the operations team.

Require a written response plan for over-temperature, cell imbalance, communication loss, isolation faults and a BMS-initiated shutdown. The plan should identify who can reset equipment, when a module must be replaced and how the critical load remains protected during service.

Make safety and code verification part of procurement

Safety depends on the complete listed battery system—cells, modules, cabinets, disconnects, controls and installation—not chemistry alone. Vertiv’s lifecycle material covers design, testing, specification, installation, site acceptance, operation, service, failure management and end of life, and references UL 1973 and related component and control standards.

The 2017 Vertiv safety paper discusses UL 1973 for stationary battery systems and lithium-ion protections such as battery management. It is historical context from June 2017, not confirmation that a current product or local installation complies today. Codes, listings and AHJ interpretations can change.

Ask for these documents before purchase

  • Current safety listings and certificates for the exact battery cabinet or assembly.
  • Installation drawings showing clearances, disconnects, cable routing, ventilation or cooling and fire-protection interfaces.
  • Electrical ratings, fault-current data, protective-device coordination information and UPS compatibility documentation.
  • Transport, storage and handling instructions, including procedures for damaged or isolated modules.
  • Commissioning and site-acceptance test procedures, alarm matrices and emergency shutdown instructions.
  • Warranty terms, operating-temperature limits, service intervals and end-of-life or recycling instructions.

Ask the manufacturer and local AHJ to confirm current fire, electrical, building, transport and environmental requirements for the actual jurisdiction. Do not rely on an older technical paper as a code approval.

Compare lifecycle cost, not only the purchase order

A credible comparison includes battery purchase, cabinets, installation labor, monitoring, commissioning, service visits, replacement strings or modules, spare inventory, room modifications, structural work, cooling and disposal. Request a lifecycle model using the same load, runtime, temperature, redundancy and planning horizon for both options.

Ask vendors to separate one-time and recurring costs and to state assumptions. A longer claimed service life is valuable only if the warranty, operating conditions and replacement process support it. Conversely, a lower initial price can be misleading if more floor area, frequent replacement or intensive inspection is required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Questions that expose hidden assumptions

  • Is the quoted runtime beginning-of-life, end-of-life or an unspecified condition?
  • Does the price include battery monitoring, BMS integration, software licenses and alarm communications?
  • What happens to redundancy while one string, cabinet or module is isolated?
  • Who supplies and installs replacement batteries, and how long are parts available?
  • What temperature and discharge-rate assumptions underpin the service-life estimate?
  • Are transport, hazardous-material handling, recycling and disposal included?
  • What site acceptance tests prove runtime, recharge, alarms, bypass behavior and fault isolation?

Characteristic UPS battery system Behind-the-meter BESS
Primary job Protect critical loads with conditioned, no-break power during an interruption. Support site-level energy management, flexibility and longer-duration reserve energy.
Electrical relationship Integrated with the UPS’s DC bus, inverter and transfer or bypass architecture. Connected to the facility distribution system through its own power-conversion and control equipment.
Response objective Immediate ride-through with tightly controlled voltage and frequency at the protected load. Energy shifting, demand management, resiliency or extended reserve, subject to its controls and interconnection.
Selection evidence UPS-approved battery configuration and manufacturer runtime data. Site load profile, interconnection, dispatch strategy, duration and local requirements.

A large data center may use both: the UPS handles the no-break transition while a BESS supports longer-duration or site-level objectives. Do not assume a BESS can be connected to a UPS DC bus, or that a UPS battery can perform all BESS functions, without an engineered and approved architecture.

Common selection mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by chemistry slogan

“Lithium is smaller” or “lead-acid is cheaper” is not a specification. Replace the slogan with a quote for the exact UPS, runtime, temperature, cabinet and service plan.

Sizing from nominal energy alone

Nominal kWh or amp-hours omit the UPS’s discharge behavior, DC limits, efficiency, aging and reserve. Require runtime data for the actual configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a vendor example as a design target

The 500 kVA, five-minute example and its 45% footprint and 72% weight figures are illustrative. They cannot predict another facility’s result.

Ignoring growth and redundancy

A battery sized for today’s measured load may fail the runtime requirement after equipment is added. Model growth and verify that a failed string or module does not remove the required redundancy.

Assuming lithium-ion is maintenance-free

BMS alarms, sensors, communications, inspections and replacement procedures remain essential. Put ownership and response times in the service agreement.

Treating an old safety paper as current approval

The cited safety paper dates from 2017. Obtain current listings, drawings and AHJ confirmation for the equipment and jurisdiction being installed.

A procurement checklist you can issue to vendors

  1. Critical load: present kW and kVA, power factor, variation and forecast growth.
  2. UPS: make, model, module count, redundancy, DC window, charger capability and approved battery configurations.
  3. Runtime: required interval, generator or shutdown event, load-shed sequence and end-of-life basis.
  4. Environment: temperature range, humidity, floor loading, seismic or structural constraints, access and clearances.
  5. Battery proposal: chemistry, cabinet count, dimensions, weight, ratings, monitoring, BMS and communications.
  6. Evidence: manufacturer runtime curves, recharge time, temperature-life data, warranty and service-life assumptions.
  7. Safety: current listings, installation instructions, fire and electrical interfaces, transport and emergency procedures.
  8. Operations: acceptance tests, alarm response, preventive maintenance, spares, replacement method and outage plan.
  9. Lifecycle: recurring service, replacement schedule, recycling or disposal and total-cost assumptions.
  10. Approvals: engineer-of-record review and AHJ confirmation before release for construction.

Bottom line for the decision

Select the battery system that demonstrably meets the critical load’s ride-through requirement in the exact UPS configuration while fitting the facility’s space, structural, safety and operating constraints. VRLA may be the practical choice where established service practices and lower initial cost matter; lithium-ion may justify its higher initial cost where footprint, weight, recharge or service-life objectives dominate. Those are decision factors, not universal outcomes. The defensible choice is the one supported by model-specific runtime and recharge data, a complete monitoring and maintenance plan, current safety approvals and a lifecycle-cost comparison that includes replacement and end of life.
