Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Check VRR and ALLM separately: HDMI 2.1 branding alone does not guarantee either feature. Sony says PS5 supports 4K/120Hz output, but the TV, connection, settings and game must also support the mode.
Which TV features matter for PS5?
Start with the capabilities you want, then confirm each one for the specific TV model and regional variant—not just the product family or a general “HDMI 2.1” label.

- 4K resolution: The TV must accept a 2160p signal.
- 120Hz input: The TV must accept 120Hz at 4K on the HDMI input you plan to use. A television that supports 120Hz only at a lower resolution does not meet that requirement.
- VRR: Variable Refresh Rate can synchronize the display’s refresh rate with compatible PS5 game output. Sony says it can reduce visual artifacts such as screen tearing and improve visual performance, but behavior depends on the display, game and selected mode. See Sony’s PS5 resolution and display guide and its PS5 features page.
- ALLM: Auto Low Latency Mode can make a compatible TV switch to a low-latency mode during gameplay. Verify it independently in the TV manual; Sony specifically cautions that not all HDMI 2.1 TVs support ALLM.
Check which individual HDMI ports support the required 4K/120Hz signal and features. Ports on the same TV may differ, and some models require you to enable a high-bandwidth or enhanced-format setting for the selected input.

Will every PS5 game run at 4K and 120 frames per second?
No. Sony confirms that PS5 supports 4K/120Hz video output, but that describes the console’s output capability—not the resolution and frame rate of every game. A 120Hz output mode applies when the TV and game support 120Hz frame rates. Check the particular game’s supported modes; do not buy a TV on the assumption that all games render at native 4K and 120 frames per second.

How to compare TVs for PS5
- Look up the exact model and regional variant. Use the manufacturer’s specifications and manual, rather than relying on a retailer’s shorthand or a series name.
- Confirm 4K at 120Hz on a specific input. Make sure the same port you intend to use supports the signal, and note any input setting the manual says to enable.
- Check VRR and its stated limits. Treat VRR as a separate compatibility item; support and results can vary by TV and game.
- Verify ALLM separately. Find it in the manual or exact-model specifications instead of assuming it follows from HDMI 2.1.
- Consider your room and viewing needs. Choose screen size, brightness characteristics and price for your space and budget. The Sony materials cited here do not compare picture quality, brightness, contrast or prices, so they cannot establish which TV is best overall.
“HDMI 2.1” is not a complete quality rating or a guarantee that every advertised feature is available on every port. Model-level specifications and the signal reported by your PS5 are more useful checks.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Usually, start with the HDMI cable included with the PS5. Sony recommends it. If you need a replacement or are troubleshooting 4K/120Hz, Sony advises using an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for that signal; a new cable is not an automatic purchase requirement. See the PlayStation 5 FAQ and current PS5 support guide.

Connect and verify the PS5 output
- Connect the console directly to the TV’s HDMI input documented for 4K/120Hz. For initial setup, avoid routing the signal through a receiver, soundbar or switch that could limit compatibility.
- Update the TV firmware and enable any input-specific high-bandwidth or enhanced-signal setting required by its manual.
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Check the connected display’s reported resolution, VRR and HDR capabilities, and review the current output signal.
- Use the included cable first. Sony says the console detects TV capabilities and selects the best available resolution automatically; resolution can also be selected manually. To pursue 4K/120Hz, check that Resolution is set to Auto or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate is Auto.
Troubleshoot a blank picture or 1080p/120Hz fallback
If selecting 4K/120Hz produces a blank image or the console falls back to 1080p/120Hz, work through these checks:
- Confirm the TV’s exact model supports 4K/120Hz input—not merely 120Hz at another resolution.
- Use the TV’s supported HDMI port and enable its required high-bandwidth input setting.
- Install current TV firmware.
- Connect the PS5 directly to the TV while testing.
- Use the included cable or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
- On PS5, check that Resolution is Auto or 2160p and Video Transfer Rate is Auto.
Sony notes that lowering Video Transfer Rate can limit 4K/120Hz output. Treat a lower rate as a troubleshooting trade-off, not the preferred permanent setting when 4K/120Hz is the goal. For Sony’s full steps, see How to change PS5 console resolution.

What to prioritize when buying
For the stated goal, the core checklist is 4K/120Hz input on the port you will use, verified VRR support, and ALLM if you want automatic low-latency switching. Then weigh size, room suitability and budget. Confirm the PS5 reports the expected capabilities after setup; the console, TV input, settings, firmware and cable all form part of the signal path.
