A 3D-printed enclosure can bring a soldering controller and an adjustable DC output into one portable unit, but the iron and auxiliary supply remain separate electrical jobs. Choose the iron controller first, then size its input, battery or mains source, converter, wiring, cooling and grounding for that specific design. Two documented approaches illustrate the difference: a Makita-battery build pairing a clone T12 station with a buck converter, and AxxSolder, a JBC-cartridge controller with its own input and grounding requirements.
What a combined mobile station actually contains
Think of the enclosure as packaging, not a single power circuit. One subsystem controls the soldering iron; another, if included, provides an adjustable DC output for separate bench tasks. Each has its own voltage, current, heat and protection requirements. A battery that can run an iron controller does not automatically make a converter’s output suitable for every load.

The controller also determines iron compatibility. A T12 setup and an AxxSolder setup are not interchangeable merely because both fit in a portable enclosure: AxxSolder is designed for specified JBC cartridge and handle families.
Two documented build architectures
| Design | Iron platform | Input and output details | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Makita-powered enclosure, 2020 | Clone Hakko T12 station | Mounted on a Makita 14.4 V battery adapter; a separate DC-DC buck converter is described as adjustable from 0–15 V and rated up to 3 A in that build. Its creator warns that sustained draw above 3 A can overheat the cited converter. Separate switches control the iron and auxiliary supply; input voltage monitoring, banana binding posts and 18 AWG silicone power wire are listed. Project listing. | Confirm the exact controller, converter’s continuous rating and cooling, battery adapter wiring, connector and wire ratings, and protection. The 0–15 V and 3 A figures are the creator’s details for this build, not ratings for similar modules generally. |
| AxxSolder portable controller | JBC C115, C210 and C245 cartridge families | Accepts 9–24 V DC or USB-C Power Delivery (PD). It limits iron output to the negotiated PD source capability. Its documentation says a 65 W, 20 V PD source allows NT115 and T210 handles to run at full power, while T245 is power-limited. The project recommends a Meanwell LRS-150-24 for full power and states its rating as 156 W at 24 V. Project documentation. | Check supported handle wiring and identification, source capability, and the controller’s grounding instructions. The recommended mains supply is a project-specific full-power option, not a recommendation for a battery build. |
A newer May 2026 enclosure listing describes a T12 station and adjustable supply for 6S 18650 cells, with boost and buck modules, display and banana outputs. Its search excerpt says a BMS and fuse are essential and recommends PETG over PLA for heat resistance, but the listing page could not be opened. Treat those as claims from that listing and verify the actual files, components and instructions before relying on them. Listing.

Choose by iron, input source and auxiliary-output needs
Start with cartridge and handle compatibility
Identify the exact iron, controller and handle before choosing an enclosure. For a T12 build, verify the controller is intended for the particular T12 handle and its wiring. For AxxSolder, use a supported JBC C115, C210 or C245 cartridge/handle family and follow its identification instructions. AxxSolder warns that incorrect handle detection can select the wrong temperature calibration and maximum power, potentially damaging a cartridge. Do not power a cartridge until its wiring and identification have been checked against the controller documentation.
Match the source to the controller
Possible inputs include a tool battery, a protected battery pack, a DC supply or USB-C PD, but the chosen controller determines what is acceptable. AxxSolder specifies 9–24 V DC or USB-C PD and constrains output according to the negotiated source capability; its 65 W example shows why a nominally supported input does not mean every handle receives full power. The Makita example instead uses a 14.4 V battery adapter. Do not transfer one design’s input assumptions to another controller.

The AxxSolder project reports a portable pack made from 12 Samsung INR18650 35E cells in a 3S4P configuration. That is a project-specific example, not a universal pack recipe: a battery build needs protection and fusing appropriate to the actual cells, pack, wiring and load.
Size the adjustable output for the load you will use
Decide the required output-voltage range and sustained current independently of the iron’s needs. Check the converter’s continuous capability, its protection behavior and how it will shed heat inside the enclosure. Do not size it using an advertised peak current alone. In the Makita creator’s described setup, the auxiliary output is stated as up to 3 A and the creator warns against drawing more than that for a long time because the cited PSU may overheat. That warning applies to the described module and configuration, not every buck converter.

Plan enclosure safety before printing
- Battery protection: For a battery-powered build, establish suitable pack protection and a fuse for the cells, wiring and expected loads; do not treat the enclosure listing’s BMS and fuse claim as a substitute for component-specific verification.
- Wiring and connections: Confirm wire gauge, connector and terminal ratings for the actual current path. The Makita build lists banana binding posts and 18 AWG silicone wire, but those parts are not automatically adequate for another design or load.
- Heat management: Allow for converter and controller heat, and keep heat-producing modules away from cells and printed walls as the design requires. A May 2026 listing recommends PETG rather than PLA; verify the enclosure’s material and thermal demands rather than assuming a filament alone makes the design safe.
- Hot iron storage: Provide a stable, heat-resistant rest and a safe way to stow the hot iron. Portability makes tip protection and accidental contact especially important.
- Grounding: Follow the selected controller’s instructions exactly. Do not infer another design’s grounding scheme from a shared enclosure or similar connector.
Grounding is controller-specific
AxxSolder’s instructions for its C245 grounded-tip arrangement call for a floating SELV (safety extra-low voltage) supply and warn against a supply whose DC output is referenced to mains earth. The project notes that some USB-C charger shells may also connect to earth. This is specific guidance for that controller arrangement, not a general wiring rule for T12 stations or other soldering controllers. Check the documentation for the exact controller and supply before connecting a grounded tip or changing any earth reference.

Pick the simpler build that meets the real requirement
- Choose a T12-plus-converter layout if you want a separate adjustable auxiliary output and are prepared to verify the battery adapter, converter’s continuous current and thermal behavior. The documented Makita build is an example, not a validated recipe for every module.
- Choose AxxSolder if your intended iron uses one of its supported JBC cartridge families and you can follow its controller, handle-identification, input-power and grounding requirements. It is a custom controller project, so expect more electronics and firmware work than fitting ready-made modules into an enclosure.
- Choose enclosure and power parts together only after settling the controller, battery or source, required auxiliary voltage/current and grounding plan. Confirm that the printed layout gives the actual components enough room and heat management; a design intended for different cells or modules may not suit your parts.
