Choose a 240Hz gaming monitor by matching its resolution and refresh rate to the frame rates your PC can sustain in the games you play, then verify motion performance, adaptive-sync support, screen size, and the monitor-to-PC connection. A 240Hz rating is the display’s maximum refresh rate; it does not make a game render 240 frames per second.
How do you choose the right gaming monitor?
Start with your games and PC, not the refresh-rate number on the box. A monitor can refresh up to 240 times per second, but the game and computer must supply frames for the display to show. Actual performance depends on the game, CPU and GPU, graphics settings, display mode, and connection. Dell’s September 2026 gaming monitor buying guide recommends matching the target refresh rate to the GPU’s output. Competitive multiplayer is often a stronger reason to prioritize high refresh; visually rich single-player games may make resolution and image quality more important.

Match resolution and refresh rate to your games
- Competitive shooters: Consider Full HD or QHD if your PC can sustain high frame rates at the settings you use. Dell’s guide discusses QHD as an option for competitive multiplayer, but your actual frame rate will vary by game and system.
- Visually detailed games: Prioritize resolution and image quality if those matter more to you than reaching very high frame rates.
- 4K at high refresh: A powerful GPU is recommended to drive 4K at high refresh rates. Check performance in your own games at your intended resolution and settings before choosing.
For a sense of the range, ASUS lists the 27-inch TUF Gaming VG279QML5A as a Full HD Fast IPS 240Hz monitor, while MSI lists the 27-inch MPG 272URX QD-OLED at 4K and 240Hz. These are specification examples, not performance recommendations.

Is 4K or 1440p better for gaming?
Neither is universally better. Higher resolution can provide a more detailed image, but it also asks more of the GPU if you want high frame rates. QHD (1440p) can be a balance for players who want more detail than Full HD while still targeting high refresh; 4K makes sense when image detail is the priority and the PC can deliver suitable frame rates.
#1 Best Overall
- Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
- Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
- Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
- Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
- Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.
Decide based on what your PC sustains in your games, not a general promise that a particular resolution will reach 240 frames per second. The monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate combination must also be supported by the specific input you plan to use.
How should you compare refresh rate and response time?
Refresh rate describes how often the display updates its image. Response time describes how long pixels take to change color. Samsung’s monitor guide explains these as different measures: a higher refresh rate can make motion appear smoother, while response time concerns pixel transitions.

Do not use a manufacturer’s millisecond figure by itself to rank monitors. ASUS lists a 0.3ms minimum response-time claim for the Full HD VG279QML5A; MSI lists 0.03ms GtG for the 4K MPG 272URX QD-OLED. Those are different manufacturer claims and conventions, not directly comparable proof of overall motion quality. Independent comparative testing would be needed to rank the models’ motion performance.

Adaptive sync coordinates a compatible display’s refresh with the frame rate from a compatible graphics card. AMD says FreeSync can reduce or eliminate visual artifacts such as tearing and stuttering; availability and requirements vary by certification tier and connection. - 240Hz Refresh Rate: Stay above the pack with 240Hz, giving you an edge in performance as frames transition instantly.Specific uses for product - Gaming
- 1ms Response Time: Colors fade and illuminate instantly with a 1ms response time, eliminating ghosting and piecing together precise imagery during action-packed scenes and gaming.
- 1500R Curvature: The 1500R degree curved design immerses you into all of the action no matter where you choose to sit in the room.
- AMD FreeSync Premium: By accelerating the frame rate to at least 120Hz at 1080P FHD resolution and delivering low latency to prevent visible delay in data processing, AMD FreeSync Premium allows gameplay to reach the highest echelons of performance.
- Built-In Speakers: Perfectly suited to work & gaming settings, built-in speakers deliver robust & smooth audio while saving space on your desk.
Check the exact monitor’s current certification and compatibility with your GPU. A feature label alone may not settle the question: ASUS lists FreeSync Premium for the VG279QML5A, while its product page says G-SYNC compatibility is “in processing.” Treat that status as unresolved unless the current listing confirms otherwise.
What monitor size should you get for gaming?
Choose a size that suits your desk distance and how much of your view you want the screen to occupy. Dell’s guide describes 24.5-inch and 27-inch screens as options for competitive play at desk distance, with larger displays better suited to an immersive setup. Consider how close you sit and whether you prefer to take in the whole screen at once; there is no single best size for every desk or player.

Panel type is another preference-led choice. The examples above contrast a Full HD Fast IPS screen with a 4K QD-OLED screen, but manufacturer specifications do not establish a universal winner. Compare image characteristics, your viewing environment, motion performance, features, ergonomics, and current price. Do not assume an HDR label alone establishes image quality.
What cables do you need to connect a 240Hz monitor?
Check the monitor, GPU output, cable, resolution, and refresh setting as one compatibility chain. LG’s July 9, 2025 support article says high-refresh support can depend on the cable connection, PC performance, GPU, and environment, and that supported modes vary by monitor model.

- Advanced Motion Blur Reduction: ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync (ELMB SYNC) technology enables ELMB together with variable refresh rate, eliminating ghosting and tearing for sharp gaming visuals with high frame rates
- Convenient Monitor Control: DisplayWidget Center enables easy OSD access and monitor settings adjustments with a mouse
- Look up the monitor’s manual or specification table and confirm that your chosen input supports your target resolution and 240Hz mode.
- Check that your graphics card has a compatible output for that input and mode.
- Verify that your existing cable supports the required connection. LG’s article gives DisplayPort 1.4 or HDMI 2.0-or-higher as guidance for the LG models it covers; those figures are not a universal guarantee for every 240Hz monitor.
- After connecting the display, open your operating system’s advanced display settings and select the intended refresh rate. If 240Hz is not available, recheck the selected resolution, input, cable, GPU output, and model-specific supported modes.
Do not buy a replacement cable unless the cable you have fails the compatibility check for the mode you intend to use.
Two 240Hz monitor specifications to compare
These official product listings illustrate how resolution and panel type can differ even when both monitors are listed at 240Hz. They are not a ranking.
