Then verify the preview, listen to the audio, and check the public watch page on a phone or other viewer device. YouTube’s dashboard checks the feed arriving at YouTube; it cannot by itself confirm that your source file or replay software is playing correctly.
Where to check YouTube Live stream health
In YouTube Studio, open the scheduled or active event in Live Control Room. While the stream is running, the dashboard shows stream health and analytics. Read Stream status messages closely: YouTube provides specific errors and instructions there. Viewer metrics such as concurrent viewers, views, likes, chat rate, and average view duration describe audience activity; a low viewer count alone does not prove an ingest problem.

The precise dashboard view can vary with the event and current YouTube Studio interface. Follow the message shown for your stream rather than relying on a remembered label or assuming that every event presents identical diagnostics.

Pre-event checklist for a prerecorded stream
- Open the intended event. Confirm that the Live Control Room event is the replay you plan to run, with the intended title, privacy, and schedule.
- Confirm the encoder destination and key. In your replay or encoder software, check that the YouTube server URL and stream key match the event. YouTube describes the key as the credential that directs the encoder feed. Treat it as private; if it has been exposed, reset it in the relevant YouTube settings and update the encoder before sending a feed.
- Run a representative test. Send a segment with movement and audio like the material planned for the event. Testing before going live can reveal issues that a static frame or silent test misses.
- Wait for and inspect the preview. Before selecting Go live for a scheduled stream, confirm that the preview appears and shows the right prerecorded segment. Check for a visible picture, audible sound, and the expected timing and metadata.
- Check the viewer path. Open the event’s watch page as a viewer would. Confirm that the stream is accessible and playing, then check on a mobile device as well. A healthy ingest indicator does not establish that every destination or device displays the intended content.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe previewing the feed before going live. Its streaming tips also recommend testing and continuous monitoring of audio and video quality.

Monitor the replay while it is live
- Keep Stream health and Stream status visible, and note the exact message and when it began if a warning or error appears.
- Listen to and watch the actual playback periodically. A dashboard message is useful, but the viewer-facing player is the check that tells you what the audience receives.
- Compare the YouTube preview and watch-page playback with the replay software’s output. If YouTube’s preview is wrong too, investigate the feed being sent; if the software output is already wrong, start with the source or playout process. This comparison is a practical way to isolate where a fault begins, not a diagnosis supplied for any particular third-party replay application.
- Check that the source file is intact and the replay application has not stalled on a black, frozen, or silent segment. Consult that application’s own documentation and alerts for source-side diagnostics.
YouTube advises operators to monitor health messages during an event and continuously monitor audio and video quality. The Live Control Room diagnoses YouTube’s incoming feed; it does not provide a universal health report for every external playout program.
Encoder settings that can affect stream health
When the status message or symptoms point to the feed, check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and connection used by the encoder. YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate table lists RTMP/RTMPS video ingestion with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. The available choices also depend on whether your encoder supports them; the platform’s supported formats do not guarantee that a particular replay application can send each one.

- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Use the current YouTube table for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate. There is no single bitrate that applies to every setup.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Connection and protocol: Choose settings your available upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP.
Changing settings may require updating both the encoder and the event workflow. Test the revised configuration before the public event rather than assuming that a higher resolution or bitrate will improve a feed that the connection cannot sustain.
Common symptoms and what to check
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| No preview appears | Confirm that the encoder is running and sending to the correct YouTube server URL with the matching event stream key. Allow time for the preview, then follow any Stream status message. Check the replay software’s own output and alerts as well. |
| Preview is black, frozen, or shows the wrong segment | Check the source file and playback position in the replay application, then compare its output with the YouTube preview. Confirm that the intended file or playlist is selected and actually advancing. |
| Picture appears but there is no sound, or audio is poor | Check that the source contains the expected audio, that the replay software is sending it, and that the viewer player is not muted. Listen in both the Live Control Room preview and the public watch page. |
| Health warnings or interruptions appear | Record the exact status message and start time. Check the encoder’s connection and upload capacity, then compare the encoder output with YouTube’s preview. Use YouTube’s recommended settings table for the configured codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| Dashboard looks healthy but viewers report a problem | Check the public watch page and a mobile device directly. Verify event accessibility and playback; dashboard health is not a substitute for testing the viewer path. |
| Few or no viewers appear in analytics | Do not treat the audience count alone as evidence of ingest failure. Check Stream status, preview, and watch-page playback separately. |
After the event: verify the archive
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but you should still check the resulting YouTube archive rather than assume it is available or complete. Its encoder guidance also advises verifying local archive-file integrity and checking that the file size is growing. Retain the local recording according to your channel’s workflow.
