How to Check Your Xbox Digital Game License History

To verify an Xbox digital-game purchase or code redemption, open Microsoft account order history, sign in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase, and go to Payment & billing > Order history. Filter by date or open an order, then look for a Completed or Redeemed status. Use the Microsoft Store library separately when your goal is to install or reinstall the game.

What “Xbox license history” actually means

Xbox does not provide a separate page labeled “digital game license history.” The authoritative record is the Microsoft account’s Store order history. It records purchases made through Microsoft and codes redeemed to that account. A transaction record answers which account acquired the entitlement and when Microsoft posted it; the Store library answers what that account can currently download.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

These are related but not identical checks. A game can be present in the library without you remembering the original order, while an old order may be visible even when the title is no longer available for your device or region. Start with the account record when you need proof of purchase or redemption, and use the library when you need to install the game.

What to have ready before you look

You only need a web browser and access to the Microsoft account that made the transaction. If you are unsure which account was used, gather the clues you already have: an old purchase email, the account normally used on the Xbox, the account belonging to the family member who bought the title, or the account that redeemed a gift code. Do not assume that the profile currently active on the console is the purchasing account.

If you are checking an older game, note an approximate year or season. The order-history page lets you narrow or broaden the date range, and an approximate date makes a long list easier to review. If the purchase was a code redemption, the code itself is not proof that the current account owns it; the redemption was attached to the account that was signed in when the code was used.

Check your Xbox purchase and redemption history

  1. Open account.microsoft.com/billing in a browser.
  2. Sign in to the Microsoft account that bought the game or redeemed its code. If you use more than one Microsoft account, sign out and test the others rather than assuming the currently open account is correct.
  3. Open Payment & billing, then select Order history. Microsoft documents this route in View your Microsoft Store order history.
  4. Under Refine, choose a date range that includes the transaction, or select an order to inspect its details. Broaden the range if you do not know the purchase date.
  5. Read the order status. A posted purchase or redemption should show Completed or Redeemed. An In progress order has not posted to the payment option yet.

Record the order date, title, order number and status if you are documenting ownership for support. Keep the account page open while checking the Store library so you do not accidentally switch accounts.

Understand the statuses

Status What it tells you How to use it
Completed The purchase has posted in the Microsoft account’s order history. Treat it as a posted purchase when matching a game to the account.
Redeemed A code redemption is recorded for the account. Use it to confirm that the code was claimed on this account.
In progress The charge has not yet posted to the payment option. Wait for posting before treating the transaction as complete; if it remains unresolved, contact Microsoft support.

“Redeemed” is not the same label as “Completed,” but both indicate that the relevant entry has been posted rather than remaining in progress. The exact title, date and order details are more useful than a search based only on a console’s installed-games list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An In progress entry should not be used as conclusive proof that ownership is available. Allow the transaction to post, then refresh the history and library. If the status remains unresolved or the payment appears incorrect, support can review the account-specific transaction.

Confirm which account owns a game

Digital rights follow the Microsoft account used for the original transaction. For a store purchase, look for the game in that account’s order history. For a code, Xbox’s Redeem Xbox codes or gift cards guidance explains that you must be signed in to the intended account before redeeming: the code becomes associated with that account and cannot be transferred afterward.

If a family member redeemed a code, check that person’s Microsoft account rather than the account normally used on the console. Likewise, a purchase made on an older personal account will not appear in a newer account’s history. You can use the order-history page for both orders and redeemed codes, so check it before trying to redeem the same code again.

When several accounts are possible, repeat the same process for each one: open the billing page, confirm the account identity, select the full date range, and inspect the title and status. Keep notes about which account produced which result. This avoids changing settings or buying the game again simply because the first account checked was not the one that acquired it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you need a record rather than a download

Order history is the better evidence for a transaction. It can show the date and posting status even if the game is not currently listed as installable. Save a screenshot or note the order number only after confirming that sensitive payment information is not included in what you share. Do not post account details or redemption codes publicly.

For a support case, the useful facts are the Microsoft account being checked, the title, approximate purchase or redemption date, order number, status and any exact error shown by the Store or Xbox app. A support representative may need to verify the account privately, so share details only through Microsoft or Xbox’s official support flow.

Find and reinstall a game you already own

If your purpose is to play the game rather than document the purchase, move to the Microsoft Store library after confirming the account. Microsoft’s Find and install your Microsoft downloads from Microsoft Store article covers downloading, installing and reinstalling digital purchases, including Xbox games bought directly from Microsoft.

  1. On the Xbox console or in the Xbox/Microsoft Store app, sign in with the account shown in the order history.
  2. Open your library or owned-games area and search for the title.
  3. Select the game and choose the available install or download action.
  4. If the title is already installed, use the game’s manage or update controls rather than buying it again.

The library is an installation tool, not a complete financial ledger. If the game is absent there, return to order history and verify the account, date range and status before drawing conclusions.

Use the two checks in sequence when helping someone else. First establish that the transaction belongs to the signed-in account. Then remain signed in to that same account while opening the library. Switching accounts between these steps is a common reason a valid purchase appears to disappear.

What to do when a purchased game is missing

A missing result has several possible explanations. Work through the checks in order so you do not repurchase a title or attempt to reuse a code that is already tied to another account.

1. Check every likely Microsoft account

Sign out of the account currently open in the browser and test the account used on the console, the account that received the purchase email, and any older personal or family account. Microsoft’s order-history guidance specifically recommends confirming that the signed-in account is the one used for the purchase.

2. Expand the date range and inspect the order

Under Refine, select a wider period or inspect individual orders. A narrow date filter can hide an older purchase. Open the order itself and check the title and status instead of relying on a general search result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you remember only that the game was bought “years ago,” start with the broadest available period and then narrow it once you see the relevant entry. Compare the displayed title carefully; similarly named editions or add-ons can make a result look like the wrong game.

3. Distinguish a purchase from a code redemption

A redeemed code may appear as Redeemed, while a direct purchase normally appears as Completed. If you expected a code to work on a different account, the association cannot be moved after redemption; check the account that performed the redemption.

Do not keep entering a code simply because it is not visible in the current account. Check the order history of the account that was signed in at the time of redemption. Xbox directs users to the Microsoft account history for orders and redeemed codes, making that record the safer first check.

4. Check regional availability

Microsoft identifies regional availability as one reason a download may not appear. Store catalogs and licensing can vary by market, so a title visible in one country may not be offered for download in another. Do not change your region solely to bypass a licensing issue; first confirm the account and consult Microsoft’s support guidance.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regional availability explains why a historical order and a current Store listing may not look identical. Treat the order as evidence of the past transaction, then verify whether the title is currently offered for the account’s market and device.

5. Review family settings

Family settings can hide content from a child or managed account. If the purchase belongs to a family member, the account’s safety or content settings may affect what appears in the Store even though the transaction remains in order history. The family organizer may need to review those settings.

Check these settings after confirming the account, not instead of confirming it. A restriction cannot explain an order missing from the wrong account, but it can explain why a valid entitlement is not visible to a managed user.

6. Consider Store removal

Microsoft’s download troubleshooting notes that a title can be removed from the Microsoft Store. Removal can affect availability and installation options without changing the historical record of an earlier transaction. An order entry therefore does not guarantee that every title remains downloadable on every device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Check device compatibility and sign-in state

The download article also lists device incompatibility and being signed in with an inappropriate Microsoft account as possible causes. Verify that the console or PC meets the title’s platform requirements and that the Store or Xbox app has not silently switched accounts. Restarting the app after correcting the account can refresh the library view.

Compatibility and licensing are separate questions. A completed purchase can be correctly recorded while the current device cannot install that title. If the library identifies a restriction, note it for support instead of treating it as evidence that the transaction never happened.

8. Escalate an entitlement mismatch

If order history shows a completed purchase or redeemed code but the correct account still cannot install the game, contact Microsoft or Xbox support with the order number, title, account email and the exact error message. Support can review account-specific entitlement data; the public order-history page alone cannot restore every missing title.

Explain the sequence you already tried: account confirmation, date-range review, order status, library search and checks for region, family settings and compatibility. That gives support a precise mismatch to investigate rather than a general report that the game is missing.

Purchase history versus installation access

Your goal Use this location What to verify
Prove a purchase or redemption Microsoft account order history Correct account, title, date range and Completed or Redeemed status
Install or reinstall a game Microsoft Store library or Xbox installation controls The same account is signed in and the device can run the title

This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating an empty library as proof that no purchase exists. Check the transaction record first, then investigate availability, settings and compatibility if installation still fails.

It also prevents the opposite mistake: treating an old order as a guarantee of current installation access. The Store may have regional, family-setting, removal or compatibility limitations even when the historical entry remains visible.

Refunds are a separate process

Finding an order does not automatically create a refund. For digital Xbox games, Microsoft directs customers to Xbox’s Request a refund for digital games route through its support page, Get a refund for apps and games purchased from Microsoft Store. You must sign in to submit a request, and Microsoft notes that online returns are not available in every market.

Use order history to identify the transaction, then follow the refund route and its eligibility questions. A completed status confirms that the order posted; it does not by itself confirm that the purchase qualifies for a refund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are asking about a code, remember that checking whether it was redeemed and requesting a refund are different tasks. First establish the account and redemption status. Then use the official refund flow to learn whether that transaction can be reviewed in your market.

Practical checklist

  • Open account.microsoft.com/billing.
  • Sign in to the Microsoft account that bought the game or redeemed the code.
  • Choose Payment & billing > Order history.
  • Use Refine to set an appropriate date range or open an order.
  • Look for Completed or Redeemed; treat In progress as not yet posted.
  • For installation, open the Microsoft Store library while remaining on that account.
  • If the title is missing, check other accounts, region, family settings, Store availability, device compatibility and sign-in state.
  • Contact Microsoft/Xbox support when the record and the available entitlement do not match.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking only the console profile: the profile currently signed in may not be the account that bought or redeemed the game.
  • Assuming “In progress” is ownership: Microsoft says that status means the charge has not posted to the payment option.
  • Trying to transfer a redeemed code: Xbox associates a redeemed code with the account used during redemption, and it cannot be transferred.
  • Using the library as the receipt: installation visibility can be affected by region, settings, Store removal or compatibility.
  • Repeating a purchase before checking history: inspect all likely accounts and the date filters first.
  • Sharing a screenshot carelessly: crop or cover account and payment details before sending evidence to anyone, and never publish a full redemption code.

When support is the right next step

Use self-service history and library checks for account selection, date filters and ordinary reinstalls. Escalate when a correctly identified, posted transaction does not produce the expected entitlement, when a payment remains in progress unexpectedly, or when you need a market-specific refund decision. Include the order details and avoid sharing a full redemption code in a public forum.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a separate Xbox license-history page?

No. Use Microsoft account Payment & billing > Order history for purchases and redeemed codes. Use the Microsoft Store library for current installation access.

How can I see which Xbox games I own?

Sign in to the Microsoft account that made the purchase, review its order history, and then open the Store library on that same account. History confirms the transaction; the library shows what is currently available to install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does “Redeemed” mean?

It indicates that a code redemption is recorded for that Microsoft account. The code is associated with the account used during redemption and cannot be transferred to another account.

What does “In progress” mean?

Microsoft says the charge has not yet posted to the payment option. Wait for the order to post before treating it as a completed transaction, and contact support if it remains unresolved.

Why is my game in order history but not in the library?

Check the account first, then regional availability, family settings, Store removal, device compatibility and sign-in state. A historical order does not guarantee that every title remains downloadable on every device or in every market.

Can I move a redeemed Xbox code to another account?

No. Xbox associates the code with the account that was signed in during redemption. Check that account’s order history instead of trying to redeem the code again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does finding the order guarantee a refund?

No. Use the Xbox digital-game refund route, sign in, and review the eligibility questions. Microsoft notes that online returns are not available in every market.

What information should I give support?

Provide the title, order number, approximate date, status, Microsoft account being checked and the exact installation or purchase error. Share this information through official support and never post a full redemption code publicly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I check my Xbox digital game purchase history?

Open account.microsoft.com/billing, sign in to the Microsoft account used for the purchase, and select Payment & billing > Order history.

Can order history show a redeemed Xbox code?

Yes. Xbox directs users to Microsoft account order history for orders and redeemed codes; a code redemption is typically labeled Redeemed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Xbox purchase not appear?

Verify the Microsoft account, broaden the date filter, and check region, family settings, Store availability, device compatibility and sign-in state.

Can I transfer a redeemed code?

No. A redeemed code is associated with the account used during redemption and cannot be transferred.

How do I request a refund?

Use Xbox’s Request a refund for digital games route through Microsoft support. Sign-in is required, and online returns are not available in every market.

The Bottom Line

Use Microsoft account Order history to verify the purchase or redemption on the correct account. Look for Completed or Redeemed, then use the Store library to install. If the record and library disagree, check account, date, region, family settings, Store availability and compatibility before contacting Microsoft or Xbox support.
