How to Check Your Website’s Accessibility—and What a Checker Can’t Tell You

An accessibility checker can quickly flag many potential website barriers, but it cannot certify that a site is accessible or compliant with WCAG. Use automated results to guide a broader review: inspect issues in context, test key tasks with a keyboard and screen reader, fix the underlying problems, and repeat the checks as the site changes.

What an accessibility checker can—and cannot—do

Accessibility checkers help identify potential barriers efficiently. Depending on the tool, they may flag markup that could affect screen-reader output, insufficient text contrast, or other detectable issues. They are useful for finding and prioritizing work, not for making a final judgment about whether people with disabilities can use a site.

The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative puts the limitation plainly: “Tools cannot check all accessibility aspects automatically. Human judgement is required.” Automated checks can miss barriers, and some alerts may be false or misleading. A clean report or high score is not proof of accessibility or WCAG conformance. W3C guidance on selecting evaluation tools explains why tools assist evaluation rather than determine accessibility.

Automated checks and hands-on testing answer different questions. A checker may identify a control whose markup needs attention; using the page reveals whether a person can reach, understand, and operate it. Chrome’s accessibility reference likewise distinguishes issues automated checks can help identify from keyboard and screen-reader navigation that must be tested by using the page.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose a checker for the job

There is no single best checker for every site. Start with the pages, content, and user tasks you need to evaluate, then check whether a tool fits your workflow. The W3C’s tool-selection guidance highlights factors such as purpose, content type, standards, cost, browser and operating-system support, access to private content, and reporting.

  • Purpose and method: Decide whether you need automated scanning, guided manual checks, or both.
  • Scope and access: Consider whether you are checking a single page, a representative sample, an entire site, or private and password-protected areas.
  • Content and standards: Confirm the tool handles your content type and identify which WCAG version or other standards it maps findings to.
  • Workflow: Choose a format that suits the work: browser extension, online service, API, command-line tool, or integration into ongoing testing.
  • Practical fit: Check supported browsers and operating systems, language, reporting, collaboration features, and any cost or licensing limits.

Tools can complement one another; a quick browser-based check, for example, may help during development while a structured evaluation addresses a broader sample. Compare them by what they can evaluate and how you will use the results—not by one overall score.

Examples of useful tools

  • WAVE: WebAIM describes WAVE as a set of tools that identifies many accessibility and WCAG errors while supporting human evaluation. Its online checker and browser extensions are available for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. The extensions evaluate the rendered page, including styles and dynamically generated content, and can be useful for intranet, password-protected, locally stored, or dynamic pages. WebAIM says the extension runs in the browser without sending page information to its server. WAVE cautions that no automated tool can check every WCAG issue and that it does not certify a site. Results from the online tool, extension, and API can differ if a page or server presents different content based on browser, location, session, cookies, time, or scripting support. See WAVE, its extension documentation, and help page.
  • axe DevTools Extension: The W3C evaluation-tools list describes it as an in-browser tool for automated, semi-automated, and manual testing, with issue details and reporting. The list identifies WCAG 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 support for the extension. Check the W3C evaluation tools list and confirm current browser support, plan limits, and pricing before choosing it.
  • Chrome DevTools and Lighthouse: Chrome DevTools can help surface issues automated checks handle, such as whether elements are properly marked up for screen readers and whether text contrast is sufficient. Treat Lighthouse as a useful feedback loop, then test keyboard and screen-reader operation directly. See the Chrome DevTools accessibility reference.
  • W3C Easy Checks: If you are starting without a specialized tool, W3C’s evaluation overview links to step-by-step Easy Checks for an initial review.

How to check a website step by step

  1. Define the scope. Identify the pages, key user journeys, and content types you need to evaluate. Include important tasks such as finding information, submitting a form, or completing a purchase where relevant.
  2. Run an automated check on representative pages. Use a checker suited to the pages and access you have. Record the issues it reports, but do not treat an alert count or score as a conformance result.
  3. Inspect each finding in context. Confirm whether an alert corresponds to a real barrier, identify who may be affected, and prioritize remediation by user impact. A tool’s result is a lead to investigate, not a verdict.
  4. Use the site with a keyboard. Navigate key tasks without a mouse. Check whether interactive elements can be reached and operated, and whether focus order makes sense as you move through the page.
  5. Test with a screen reader. Try the same essential flows using a screen reader. Check whether controls have understandable names, headings communicate structure, and dynamic changes are conveyed.
  6. Fix the source of the problem and retest. The needed change may be in code, design, or content. After making it, rerun relevant checks and repeat the affected keyboard or screen-reader task.
  7. Repeat throughout development and after significant changes. Check early, when fixes are easier to make, and continue as pages and features evolve. For a more comprehensive evaluation, use a documented, representative sample rather than relying on a quick scan.

When a quick scan is not enough

A single-page check is a useful starting point, but it cannot establish that an entire site works for everyone. A fuller conformance evaluation needs a defined scope, exploration of the product, representative samples, evaluation, and reporting. WCAG-EM provides a process for this work that is independent of a particular tool, browser, or assistive technology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The W3C’s WCAG-EM overview says WCAG-EM 2 was published on 23 July 2026 and applies to apps and other digital products as well as websites. For the methodology, see the WCAG-EM 2.0 report. A structured evaluation is different from running an automated checker: it documents what was in scope, what was sampled, how it was evaluated, and what the findings mean.
