Check your Virginia voter registration and assigned polling place through the Virginia Department of Elections’ Citizen Portal. For statewide general and primary elections, the department’s separate Polling Place and Ballot Information Lookup can also show election-specific details such as early-voting sites and what is on the ballot.
Which Virginia lookup should you use?
| Route | Best for | Scope and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Citizen Portal | Checking registration status and, for registered voters, checking a polling place | Year-round voter-record route; the portal also supports registration and updates and shows election district, absentee ballot status, and voting history. |
| Polling Place and Ballot Information Lookup | Finding election-specific voting information, including early-voting options and ballot information | Available during statewide general and primary elections; details vary by election. |
| Local general registrar | Resolving an unclear or missing online record, or asking about a locality-specific special election | Choose your city or county in the state’s contact lookup to find the office. |
How do I check whether I’m registered to vote?
- Open the official Virginia Citizen Portal and choose the registration-status function.
- Have your name, date of birth, last four digits of your Social Security number, and locality ready. The portal says information must be entered in English.
- Review the voter record shown. The portal can also display your election district, absentee ballot status, and voting history.
If you believe you are registered but cannot find your record, do not treat the missing online result as proof that you are unregistered. Contact the general registrar for your city or county using the state’s Local Contact Information lookup. The department also explains voter-record access on its View Your Info page.

What if my name or address is out of date?
The Virginia Department of Elections lists several ways to update voter information: use the online portal, notify the department through a DMV address change, submit a voter registration application, or write to your local registrar. See the department’s Election and Voter FAQ for the options.
The department says a registration application must be postmarked at least 11 days before the next primary or general election. Because the applicable deadline depends on the election, verify the current deadline with the state before submitting an update. If you mail an application and receive no acknowledgement within 30 days, contact your local registrar.

What if there is a problem at the polling place?
- If officials cannot find you in the pollbook or cannot confirm your eligibility, you may cast a provisional ballot while your eligibility is resolved. The state explains this and other voting procedures on its Casting a Ballot page.
- If you are at the wrong polling place, the department’s FAQ says to go to the location associated with your registration address. Check the assigned location through an official lookup rather than guessing.
- Virginia Election Day polls are open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; anyone in line at 7:00 p.m. is allowed to vote.
For the November 3, 2026 general election
A Virginia Department of Elections release dated May 8, 2026, gives November 3, 2026, as the general election date and directs registered voters to the Citizen Portal to check voter information, including polling location. Confirm election dates, registration deadlines, and location details through the department’s current official election information, since these details can change.
