On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The system software version is displayed on that page. Stop there if you only need to record the version; the separate update command is not required. Sony’s page also shows the console name, IP address and MAC address, so hide those details before sharing a screenshot. See Sony’s version-check instructions.
What you are checking
Sony labels the value on the information page as the PS5 system software version. Many guides call the same value the firmware version. For the purpose of identifying a console before researching jailbreak compatibility, record the complete number exactly as shown, including every decimal point or suffix.

You do not need a USB drive, a computer, an internet download or any additional product to read this value. The check is performed from the console’s normal Settings interface. A USB drive is relevant to separate manual-update or reinstallation procedures, not to this version check.
Before opening Settings, decide whether you are only documenting the installed version or whether you intend to update the console. Those are different actions. If preserving the current state matters, do not select an option that searches for or installs an update while you are collecting the number.

How to read the version on the PS5
- Turn on the PS5 and wait for the home screen to finish loading.
- Open Settings from the gear icon.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Choose Console Information.
- Read the system software version and write it down exactly, or take a private photograph for your own records.
The number on this page is the value you need when a compatibility document asks which PS5 firmware or system software is installed. Keep the punctuation and any additional characters; do not shorten it to a major version such as “5” or “7.”
Sony states that the same screen includes the PS5 console name, IP address and MAC address. Those identifiers are not needed for a version check. If you send an image to a forum or another person, crop the image to the version field or cover the network and console-identity lines first.
What “Up to date” means—and what it does not mean
Sony says the words “Up to date” beneath the version indicate that the latest system software is installed. That is an update-status statement, not a security or jailbreak assessment.
- “Up to date” shown: Sony’s service considers the installed software current according to its update information at that time.
- No “Up to date” wording: The absence of that label alone does not identify an exploitable or non-exploitable version. It may simply reflect how the page is presented or whether the console has recently checked for updates.
- A version number by itself: It identifies what is installed, but it does not prove that a jailbreak, exploit, payload or homebrew method will work.
Do not treat the status label as a recommendation to modify the console, and do not treat it as evidence that an older version is unsafe. It only describes Sony’s update status.

Checking the version is not the same as updating
The version-reading page and Sony’s update controls are separate locations. Sony places update commands under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Opening that area can lead to a check for newer software or to an installation flow, whereas Console Information is the read-only destination for identifying the currently installed version.

If you only want the number, complete the first task and leave Settings. Do not select “Update” or an equivalent command merely to confirm what version is already installed.
Sony’s update-support page states: SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update as soon as possible after the update is released.
That is Sony’s general security and maintenance position. It is not a statement that updating is suitable for a particular jailbreak plan.
Sony also warns that using update data obtained from other sources or using other methods can impair operation and may affect warranty and repair services. Use Sony’s official update instructions if you choose to update, and avoid files or procedures whose origin and integrity you cannot verify. Does your PS5 version support a jailbreak?
The exact version number is necessary for a compatibility check, but the Sony support pages do not establish which versions are exploitable, which jailbreaks are genuine, or whether updating will help or hurt a particular exploit. No responsible compatibility table can be derived from the Settings screen alone.
Jailbreak compatibility is version-sensitive and can also depend on the console model, the exploit or software release being discussed, and whether a method is still maintained. A page that says “latest version” or “old firmware” without naming a precise release and date is not enough to make a decision. Treat an unverified claim that a version “works” as unconfirmed until you can check a current, technically credible source that identifies the exact system software and method.
Record before you investigate
- Write the complete version exactly as displayed.
- Note the date on which you checked it.
- Record the console model information only if a compatibility source specifically requires it; do not publish your IP address or MAC address.
- Do not update while you are still trying to determine whether the installed version is relevant to your intended method.
Do not infer compatibility from update status
“Up to date” does not mean “jailbreakable,” and an older-looking number does not guarantee an exploit. Sony’s update status and a third party’s compatibility claim answer different questions. Keep those claims separate in your notes and when asking for help.

When evaluating a compatibility claim, look for the exact firmware number, the publication or release date, the console model or revision covered, and clear instructions for recovering from a failed attempt. A claim that omits those details cannot tell you whether it applies to your console. Do not supply a version number from memory or from a cropped screenshot when the full value is available on the console.

Should you update before installing a jailbreak?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer supported by Sony’s pages. Sony recommends prompt updates for ordinary console security and operation, while jailbreak compatibility may depend on retaining a particular version. Those goals can conflict.
Update now when ordinary PS5 security and support come first
If your priority is Sony’s supported online services, current security fixes, and normal warranty or repair handling, follow Sony’s official update process. Read the update information, use only Sony-provided data, and allow the console to complete the process without interruption.
Pause before updating when version preservation is the issue
If you are considering a version-specific modification, first document the installed number and verify current compatibility information for that exact release. Do not assume that installing the newest software will preserve an option that depends on an older release. Conversely, do not assume that refusing an update makes a jailbreak safe or available.
Do not use a third-party “downgrade” promise as a shortcut
Sony’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement addresses bypassing or circumventing security or authentication mechanisms, downgrading, unauthorized hardware or software, and unauthorized exploitation. Read the agreement at Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement. It is Sony’s contract for the United States; it is not a substitute for legal advice about the law where you live.
Privacy when sharing your version
The Console Information page is more revealing than a simple firmware label. Sony identifies the console name, IP address and MAC address as additional information on that screen. A public screenshot can therefore disclose network or device identifiers that strangers do not need.
- Capture only the part of the screen containing the version, if your device allows it.
- Otherwise, edit the image before posting and cover the console name, IP address and MAC address with opaque blocks.
- Check the edited image at full size; translucent highlighting can leave the numbers readable.
- Remove the original unedited image from public posts and shared folders.
For private troubleshooting, send the complete version text rather than the entire screen whenever the other person does not need the additional identifiers.
Troubleshooting the check
The menu names do not match an older guide
Use Sony’s current support terminology: System, then System Software, then Console Information. Guides written for another console generation or an earlier interface may describe a different path. Do not choose an update command simply because an older guide places it near the information screen.

Back out without confirming an installation. Return to the System Software menu and select Console Information to read the installed value. If an update has already started, do not disconnect power; follow the on-screen instructions and let the supported process finish.
You cannot tell which number is the version
Use the value explicitly associated with system software on Console Information. Do not substitute the IP address, MAC address, console name or a game’s application version. If you are asking another person for help, type the label and number exactly as displayed.
You have already updated
Record the new number and the date. A previous version cannot be reconstructed from the Console Information page, and Sony’s support material reviewed here does not describe a general downgrade path. Treat any claim that a downgrade is routine or risk-free with caution, especially because Sony’s US licence terms specifically address downgrading and security circumvention.
A practical pre-jailbreak checklist
- Open Console Information and copy the complete system software version.
- Confirm that you are reading the PS5’s system software value, not a game or application version.
- Save the number privately with the date you checked it.
- Hide the console name, IP address and MAC address before sharing an image.
- Decide whether your priority is Sony-supported updates or investigating a version-specific modification.
- Keep the version check separate from the update flow; do not install an update just to view the number.
- For compatibility, require a current source that names the exact firmware and method. Sony’s support pages do not provide that compatibility determination.
- Read the applicable licence terms and local law before attempting any security circumvention.
Once this checklist is complete, you have the factual starting point needed for further evaluation without accidentally changing the software you meant to identify.
