On your PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The system software (often called firmware) version is shown there. Write down the complete value before doing anything else. If the page says Up to date, Sony is indicating that the installed system software is current; it does not indicate whether the console is compatible with any particular jailbreak.
What “firmware version” means on a PS5
People commonly say “PS5 firmware” when they mean the console’s installed system software version. Sony uses “system software” in its menus and support documentation. The value under Console Information is the identifier you need to record when discussing a console’s software state.

This is a lookup, not an exploit test. The version shown by the console tells you what is installed at the time you check it. It does not, by itself, establish that a jailbreak exists for that version, that an exploit is publicly available, or that a particular procedure will work. Sony’s support page identifies the menu location and explains the meaning of “Up to date,” but it does not provide a jailbreak-compatibility chart. Sony’s version and update instructions are the authoritative reference for the menu path.

Use the console’s information screen rather than an update prompt. The complete path is the same one Sony documents for viewing the installed version.

- Turn on the PS5 and wait for the home screen.
- Open Settings by selecting the gear icon in the upper-right corner.
- Select System.
- Select System Software.
- Select Console Information.
Read the system software version displayed on that page and record it exactly, including every number, decimal point, and suffix. Sony describes the result plainly: “The system software version appears.” Take a photograph or make a written note if you need to refer to the value later, but check that the record matches the screen before leaving the menu.
What to record
- The complete system software version as displayed under Console Information.
- Whether the page shows a separate status such as Up to date.
- Whether the console is running beta system software, if that applies to your console.
- The date you made the check, so an old note is not mistaken for the console’s current state.
Do not replace the exact version with a description such as “latest” or “old.” A compatibility discussion needs the literal version string, while “Up to date” is only Sony’s status message about whether it considers the installed software current.
Do not confuse version information with update controls
The information screen and the update screen are separate destinations. Console Information is where you read the installed version. Sony places update checks, downloads, and installation controls under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony’s PS5 system-software update guide documents that update area.

If your only objective is to identify the version before making a decision, stop after reading Console Information. Selecting an update option can take you into a different process than the simple lookup you intended. Sony recommends installing the latest update and warns against update data or update methods that it has not authorized; those are Sony’s support and security positions, not a prediction about how any particular update affects a particular exploit.

How to interpret the screen
The version number
The version string is the useful identifier for any later, version-specific discussion. Copy it character for character. Do not infer a different value from the console model, storage size, purchase date, or the date of a game disc. Those details do not substitute for the system software value shown in Console Information.
“Up to date”
Sony says that “You have the latest version installed if Up to date is shown under the system software version.” In other words, the message describes Sony’s view of whether the installed software is current. It does not certify that the console is jailbreakable, unjailbreakable, secure against every exploit, or suitable for any unapproved software.
Why one check is not a compatibility verdict
A jailbreak claim is version-specific and can also depend on conditions that are not displayed on this screen. The official Sony materials for this menu do not identify a supported threshold or a current list of versions that work with a named jailbreak. Treat the version check as a fact-gathering step, not proof that a jailbreak will work. Avoid claims that a console is compatible based solely on seeing an older-looking or newer-looking number.
If the PS5 is running beta system software
Sony’s beta instructions use the same location: Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The page can therefore show the beta version installed on a participating console. Record the beta designation exactly if one appears. Do not silently treat a beta build as identical to a generally released build with a similar number; the console’s own display is the reliable description of what is installed. Viewing the beta version still does not establish jailbreak compatibility.
A careful workflow before making any further decision
1. Make the lookup, not an update
Use Console Information and leave the update controls alone unless you have independently decided that updating is what you want. The two destinations are adjacent in the System Software area but serve different purposes.
2. Preserve an exact record
Write the version exactly as shown, note the date, and keep a photo or transcription that can be checked later. If you are comparing information from another person, ask for the full displayed value rather than a shortened description such as “current,” “launch firmware,” or “old firmware.”

The fact you can establish directly is: “This PS5 displayed version X under Console Information on date Y.” The following conclusions do not follow automatically: that an exploit exists for X, that a public tool supports X, that a procedure is safe, or that the console can be returned to an earlier version.

4. Check the date on any compatibility claim
System software can change, and compatibility statements can become obsolete. A page or post that does not identify the exact version and when the information was current is not a reliable substitute for your own recorded value. Do not turn an unverified compatibility claim into an instruction to install software or alter the console.
5. Keep Sony’s stated restrictions in context
For US users, Sony’s PS5 System Software Licence Agreement says that rights to use previous versions terminate when the current version can be received or installed. The agreement also lists restrictions involving downgrading and specified circumvention or unauthorized software and hardware uses, subject to applicable law. That is a US licence position, not a universal legal conclusion for every country. If your console is elsewhere, consult the terms and law that apply to your jurisdiction.

You opened an update page instead
Back out without selecting an installation command and return to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information. The update page is the separate System Software Update and Settings destination. Reaching the update page does not itself change the installed version; an update action is a different step.
You see “Up to date” but no number is obvious
Look for the system software version text on the same Console Information screen. “Up to date” is a status placed under the version; it is not a replacement for recording the version string. If the display is difficult to read, enlarge your view or photograph the screen and verify the characters manually.
The menu labels do not match
Confirm that you are using a PS5 rather than a PS4 and that you entered System before selecting System Software. Sony’s support pages use the labels quoted above. Regional language settings can translate labels, but the hierarchy remains the same. If Sony changes the interface, use its current support page for the corresponding path.
You are enrolled in the beta
Remain on Console Information to read the beta version. Do not use the beta-management controls merely to inspect the version. Sony’s beta page distinguishes viewing the beta version from stopping beta participation.
You updated before recording the version
The version shown now describes the console after that update; it cannot reliably reconstruct which version was installed earlier. Record the current value and the date, and do not claim that it represents the pre-update state. Sony’s official pages do not provide a general recovery method for recreating an earlier system software state.

Use a note in this format so the important qualification stays with the number:
Console: PS5
System software shown at Settings > System > System Software > Console Information: [exact value]
Status shown: [for example, Up to date, if displayed]
Beta software: [yes/no or exact designation if shown]
Checked on: [date]
The bracketed items above are fields in a personal note, not values to guess. Replace each one with what the console actually displays. Keeping the menu path in the note helps prevent confusion with the separate update screen.
What this check can—and cannot—tell you
- It can tell you: the system software version currently installed on that PS5, plus the status Sony displays beneath it.
- It cannot tell you: whether a particular jailbreak supports that version, whether an exploit is publicly available, whether a method is lawful where you live, or whether changing the console is reversible.
- It does not perform: an update, downgrade, exploit, or jailbreak. Reading Console Information is a lookup only.
For that reason, the responsible stopping point is the exact recorded version. Any decision beyond the lookup requires current, version-specific information and an understanding of the applicable Sony terms and local law; neither is supplied by the version display itself.
