To estimate how much of your portfolio is exposed to AI stocks, first define which companies count and which accounts you are measuring. Then record the market value of every holding, inspect each fund’s dated holdings, calculate direct and look-through exposure, and add the results by company. A fund ticker alone cannot tell you the exposure: several funds may own the same companies.
What “AI-stock exposure” means
“AI stock” is not a formal asset class with a universally accepted membership list. One investor may count companies that design processors, another may include cloud providers and software vendors, and a third may include only businesses whose reported revenue is primarily tied to artificial-intelligence products. Your result is therefore an estimate based on a definition you choose, not an objective label assigned to every security.

Write the list before doing the arithmetic. For example, you might select a handful of companies that you believe are central to the AI theme and state that list at the top of your worksheet. Do not add a company merely because a news article uses the word “AI.” Use a consistent rule, record the date, and change the list only deliberately. If you include employer stock, private investments, cryptocurrency-related positions or other assets, include them only when you can obtain reliable current values and have decided they belong in the analysis.

Why a fund ticker is not a look-through exposure number
An exchange-traded fund or mutual fund gives you indirect exposure to the companies it owns. The fund’s name and ticker do not reveal how much of your total portfolio is tied to any one company. A technology fund could hold a large position in one selected company, while a broad-market fund could hold a smaller position in the same company. Owning both funds can create more overlap than the number of funds suggests.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says most ETFs post holdings daily and directs investors to fund websites for portfolio information. Use the fund’s own holdings disclosure or regulatory filing, and record its “as of” date. A statement dated today combined with holdings from several months ago is still useful for an approximation, but it is not a same-day measurement.
Investor.gov cautions that a narrowly focused fund may not provide broad diversification and recommends checking top holdings across multiple funds. This is why the analysis must show both the contribution from each fund and the combined exposure to each selected company.

1. List every included security
From each brokerage or retirement statement, copy the security name or ticker, number of shares, market value and statement date. Record individual stocks, ETFs, mutual funds and any other investments you have chosen to include. Do not infer a value from the number of shares if the statement already provides a market value; prices move continuously.
2. Establish the denominator
Add the market values of all included positions and cash to obtain the portfolio total. This total is the denominator for every percentage. If an account contains an asset for which you do not have a dependable value, either obtain one or exclude the asset and clearly label the resulting percentage as partial.
3. Save the evidence
Keep a copy of each account statement and every holdings file or web page used. Write down the holdings date, not just the day you downloaded the file. Fund portfolios change, and a later review should be able to reproduce the earlier estimate.

Calculate direct exposure to individual companies
For a company that you own directly, divide its market value by the total value of the portfolio being analyzed:
Direct company weight = direct shares’ market value ÷ total portfolio value × 100
Suppose the analyzed portfolio totals $100,000 and you hold $7,500 of one selected company directly. Its direct exposure is 7.5%. If you hold that company in two included accounts, add the two market values before dividing by the single combined portfolio total. Do not calculate each account’s percentage and then add percentages based on different denominators.

Keep direct holdings separate from funds at this stage. That separation lets you see whether a company’s eventual total exposure comes mainly from a deliberate stock purchase or from overlapping funds.
Look through each fund
For every included fund, find the selected company’s weight inside the fund and multiply it by the fund’s share of your total portfolio:

Indirect company weight from one fund = fund weight in your portfolio × company weight inside that fund
Use decimal or percentage units consistently. A fund that represents 20% of your portfolio and lists a selected company at 5% contributes 1 percentage point to your portfolio exposure (20% × 5% = 1%). That is an arithmetic example, not a claim about a real fund.
Work through one fund at a time
- Calculate the fund’s portfolio weight. Divide the fund’s market value by the total portfolio value.
- Read the company weight. Use the percentage in the fund’s dated holdings disclosure. If the disclosure lists a range, share class, derivative or “other” category that prevents an exact match, describe the limitation instead of inventing a number.
- Multiply the two weights. The product is the selected company’s estimated contribution from that fund.
- Repeat for every selected company. A single fund can contribute to several companies.
- Repeat for every fund and account. Add contributions only after each fund has been calculated against the same portfolio denominator.
Worked arithmetic example
The following figures are hypothetical and illustrate the method. They are not holdings claims about any fund. Assume a $100,000 portfolio contains $10,000 of Fund A, $20,000 of Fund B and $7,500 of Company X held directly. The fund disclosures are dated separately from the account statement.
| Holding | Value in portfolio | Portfolio weight | Company X weight inside holding | Estimated Company X exposure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company X held directly | $7,500 | 7.5% | Not applicable | 7.5 percentage points |
| Fund A | $10,000 | 10% | 6% | 0.6 percentage points |
| Fund B | $20,000 | 20% | 3% | 0.6 percentage points |
Company X’s estimated combined exposure is 8.7%: 7.5% direct plus 0.6% from Fund A plus 0.6% from Fund B. The example shows why counting Fund A and Fund B as two separate “diversified” positions would hide the shared company exposure.
Build a company-level exposure table
Create one row for every company on your chosen AI list. Add direct exposure and every indirect contribution. Keep the fund columns visible so you can identify what drives the result.
| Selected company | Direct weight | Fund A contribution | Fund B contribution | Other funds | Total estimated exposure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company X | 7.5% | 0.6% | 0.6% | 0% | 8.7% |
| Company Y | 0% | 0.4% | 0.8% | Not stated | Calculate after all included funds are reviewed |
Do not replace an unavailable value with zero. “Zero” means you checked the dated holdings and the company was not present; “not stated” means the disclosure or your records do not establish the value. If a fund reports a position under a parent company, subsidiary or depositary receipt, document the treatment you used.
Calculate the group total without hiding concentration
After calculating each company’s total, add the selected companies’ weights:

AI-group exposure = sum of each selected company’s direct and indirect weight

Keep the company-level rows beside the total. A group total can look moderate while one company accounts for most of it. Conversely, a larger total spread across several companies may have a different concentration profile. The total answers “how much of this defined group is present?”; the rows answer “which companies create that exposure?”
Do not call the result your portfolio’s exposure to all AI businesses. It is exposure to the particular list you selected, through the accounts and assets you included, using holdings data from the dates recorded.
Measure fund overlap explicitly
Compare shared top holdings
Place the holdings of each fund side by side and mark every selected company that appears in more than one. For each repeated company, add the indirect contribution from all funds and any direct shares. This reveals whether a new fund adds a different source of exposure or mainly repeats positions you already own.
Separate fund-level and company-level concentration
Fund-level concentration asks how much of the portfolio sits in each fund. Company-level concentration asks how much ultimately reaches one company after looking through every fund. A portfolio can have many funds but still have a high company-level weight if those funds own the same large companies.
Check the “other” and cash categories
Some disclosures group small positions into “other,” list cash separately or report derivatives that do not map neatly to a common-stock ticker. Those categories can make the look-through sum less than 100%. Note the unresolved portion and avoid claiming complete exposure coverage.
Keep dates and data quality visible
Account values and fund holdings are snapshots. Record both dates in the worksheet and label the output, for example: “Estimated exposure using account values dated October 16, 2026, and fund holdings dated October 15, 2026.” If the dates differ materially, explain that market movements and portfolio changes may have altered the true current weights.
Most ETFs publish holdings daily, but “daily” does not mean every fund’s page is updated at the same time or that every security is priced simultaneously. Mutual-fund holdings may be disclosed on a different schedule. Use the latest available official disclosure and state its date.
Recalculate after a major trade, account transfer, rebalance or material change in a fund’s published holdings. A quarterly review may be sufficient for a long-term investor who makes few changes; a person with concentrated positions or frequent trading may need to check more often. The appropriate interval depends on how quickly the portfolio changes and how precise the estimate needs to be.

Interpret the percentage in personal context
There is no universal percentage at which AI exposure becomes “too high.” Investor.gov notes that asset-allocation decisions depend in part on time horizon and risk tolerance. A percentage that one investor can tolerate may be unsuitable for another because the consequences of a decline, the need for near-term cash and the ability to withstand volatility differ.
Use the estimate as a decision input, not as a verdict. Ask:
- Is the exposure intentional, or did it arise from several funds that happen to own the same companies?
- Would a large decline in the selected companies interfere with a near-term spending need?
- Does the exposure sit mainly in one company, or is it distributed across several?
- Are the underlying holdings current enough for the decision you are making?
- Which accounts and assets were excluded, and could they materially change the result?
The SEC’s beginner guidance describes “at least a dozen carefully selected individual stocks” as a general educational rule of thumb and says four or five individual stocks do not constitute a diversified stock portfolio. That statement is not a legal requirement or an individualized threshold, and it does not determine whether a particular group of funds is diversified. Your look-through table is more informative than counting securities or fund tickers.

A repeatable worksheet workflow
- Write the scope. Name the accounts, assets and selected companies, and state the analysis date.
- Enter values. Copy each holding’s market value and calculate the total portfolio value.
- Mark direct positions. Divide each selected company’s direct value by the total.
- Collect fund disclosures. Save the official holdings file or page and its “as of” date for every fund.
- Calculate look-through weights. Multiply each fund’s portfolio weight by each selected company’s in-fund weight.
- Aggregate by company. Add direct and indirect contributions, retaining a column for each fund.
- Sum the defined group. Add the selected companies’ totals while preserving the company-level breakdown.
- Audit the result. Check denominators, dates, duplicate tickers, missing values and excluded accounts.
- Label the output. State that it is an estimate based on dated account values and fund disclosures.
What this estimate can and cannot tell you
It can show the approximate share of the included portfolio economically linked to the companies on your chosen list. It can identify which companies dominate that exposure, which funds contribute it and where overlap exists. It can also reveal that a seemingly broad collection of funds repeatedly owns the same positions.
It cannot guarantee a real-time figure, predict a company’s performance, measure every business that may benefit from AI, or account perfectly for derivatives, securities lending, intraday trading and undisclosed changes. It does not determine an appropriate allocation for you. The quality of the answer depends on complete account values, reliable fund disclosures, consistent definitions and matching dates.
No current statistic establishes what percentage of household portfolios is exposed to AI stocks. Do not substitute a market-wide estimate for your own calculation. Your dated worksheet, updated when the portfolio changes, is the relevant evidence for your decision.
