How do I check my phone’s battery health?
Use the instructions for your phone brand below. Labels and features can vary by model and software version, so a missing menu does not necessarily mean your battery cannot be checked.

iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Some software versions call this Battery Health & Charging.
- Review the maximum capacity and any performance-related status shown. On iPhone 15 and later running iOS 18, the screen can also show the battery’s date of first use, capacity, and cycle count, according to Apple’s battery information guidance.
- If the phone says it cannot verify that it has a genuine Apple battery, Apple warns that the battery-health information might not be accurate. On supported models, check Settings > General > About > Parts and Service History for a battery marked Genuine, Used, or Unknown. Apple explains these part-history labels.
Google Pixel
- On Pixel 8a and later, go to Settings > Battery > Battery health. The screen shows a Normal or Reduced status and an estimated remaining capacity.
- On Pixel 8a and later, find cycle count at Settings > About phone > Battery information.
- Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold, have Settings > Battery > Battery Diagnostics. The Battery health status feature is not available on Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, or Pixel 8 Pro. See Google’s Pixel battery-health guidance and Battery Diagnostics instructions.
A Pixel cycle count represents full-discharge equivalents, not just the number of times you plug in. For example, using 50% of the battery and recharging counts as half a cycle. Google says the capacity is estimated by the fuel gauge; actual lifespan varies with use and conditions.

Samsung Galaxy
- Open the Samsung Members app and tap Support > Phone diagnostics.
- Run the battery status check, or use the app’s Test all flow and review the battery result.
Samsung’s diagnostic instructions do not promise a capacity percentage for every Galaxy model. Samsung recommends a service-center check if the phone shuts down unexpectedly often, battery life has noticeably decreased, other battery-related issues arise, or the device says the battery needs a check-up. What does a battery-health percentage mean?
Maximum capacity or remaining capacity estimates how much energy the battery can hold compared with when it was new. A lower estimate can help explain shorter runtime, but it is not a complete measure of how the phone behaves day to day. Pair it with the phone’s health status, cycle count if available, runtime, charging frequency, and any unexpected shutdowns.
Capacity readings are estimates rather than guarantees of a particular amount of screen time. Usage patterns and conditions affect battery life, and cycle-count definitions or reporting features differ across models.

When should I replace my phone battery?
Start with the manufacturer’s status or diagnostic for your exact model. Replacement is worth discussing with the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider when the phone’s runtime has materially worsened, it shuts down unexpectedly, it needs charging much more often, or it shows an official reduced-health or service indication.
Published manufacturer guidance differs by generation. These cycle figures describe stated recommendations or design expectations under the conditions noted; they are not guaranteed service lives.

Apple’s figures are published in its iPhone battery and performance guidance; Google’s model-specific recommendations are in its Pixel battery-health guidance. Do not treat 80% as a universal cross-brand cutoff: Samsung’s cited diagnostic, for example, does not promise a capacity percentage for every Galaxy model.
Why does my phone battery drain so fast?
A degraded battery may hold less charge than it did when new, so the phone runs for less time between charges. But fast drain alone does not establish that the battery needs replacement. Compare the runtime change with the battery-health status and other symptoms, and use the model’s diagnostic or seek support if the cause is unclear.

- Check the health result: use the brand-specific steps above and note any Reduced, service, or check-up indication.
- Consider the change over time: a phone that now needs charging much more often or shuts down unexpectedly merits model-specific support.
- Ask about repair eligibility: check warranty coverage, repair options, and the quoted cost for your exact model and region before deciding. Provider qualifications, parts, prices, and eligibility vary.
What to consider before arranging a repair
Compare the on-device health status and cycle count where available with the phone’s actual runtime and shutdown symptoms. Then ask the manufacturer or a qualified provider about warranty coverage, repair eligibility, provider qualifications, parts, and the local price. A battery replacement may extend a phone’s useful life, but the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a universal point at which repair is more economical than buying another phone.
Battery swelling or a lifting screen: stop and get help
A swollen battery can push the screen or cover out of place. Do not press it back down, pry open the phone, or try to take apart or repair the battery yourself. Google specifically advises against these actions for a swollen Pixel battery. Follow the manufacturer’s repair instructions or local recycling rules, and do not put a battery or device in household waste. Google’s Pixel battery guidance covers safe handling.

For iPhone battery replacement, Apple says, “only a trained technician should replace an iPhone battery.” Its support page explains that lithium-ion batteries are sensitive and careless damage could cause overheating, fire, or injury.
