To check a phone’s battery health, look for a manufacturer-provided battery-health screen; to find what is draining it today, check battery usage by app. These are different measures: battery health estimates longer-term capacity and condition, while battery usage shows recent power consumption. The menus and metrics depend on the phone model and software, and Android does not have one universal battery-health percentage or path.
Battery health vs. battery usage: what each screen tells you
- Battery usage helps identify which apps or activities used charge recently. High background or location activity may point to a setting worth reviewing.
- Battery health, when your phone provides it, estimates longer-term condition or capacity relative to when the battery was new. It is not the percentage of charge remaining right now.
A charge cycle is also different from a single charge or a day of use. Apple defines one cycle as using an amount equal to 100% of the battery’s capacity; that total can accumulate across multiple partial discharges.

How to check battery health and recent usage
iPhone
- iPhone 15 models and later with iOS 17.4 or later: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says the screen can show maximum capacity, cycle count, manufacture date, first-use date, and whether replacement is recommended. Apple’s battery and performance guidance has model-specific details.
- iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to view health and peak-performance information.
- To see recent drain: Go to Settings > Battery and review battery usage by app. Apple identifies background and location activity as possible sources of app-related drain. Apple’s battery guidance explains additional ways to manage usage.
Samsung Galaxy
For Galaxy devices covered by Samsung UK’s instructions, go to Settings > Device care > Battery > Battery usage to see apps that recently used power. Return to Battery and choose Power mode to review available performance and battery-use trade-offs. Samsung also describes Adaptive battery as limiting use by apps you rarely open. Use the manufacturer’s support instructions for your exact phone and Android version. The information here does not establish a single Android-wide battery-health percentage or menu path; an app’s estimate should not be treated as equivalent to a manufacturer-provided health reading.
Ways to improve battery life between charges
Battery life is how long the phone runs before it needs recharging. Battery lifespan is how long its battery lasts before it needs replacement. Settings can help the phone run longer today, but they do not restore capacity lost as the battery ages.

Find and reduce unnecessary drain
Start with the battery-usage screen. If an app is using unusually high power in the background or through location access, restrict its activity or permission only if that function is not needed. Apple and Samsung both point users to built-in usage information and device controls rather than a universal optimizer.

- Dim the display or enable Auto-Brightness. Apple identifies screen brightness as a general battery-life lever.
- Use Low Power Mode on iPhone when longer runtime matters more than peak performance. Apple says it reduces brightness, performance, animations, and some background functions.
- On Galaxy phones, review the available Power mode options; the balance between performance and battery use depends on the device.
- Prefer Wi-Fi when practical. The effect depends on signal strength, network, and how the phone is being used.
Avoid excessive heat
For iPhone, Apple says batteries work best at ambient temperatures of 0–35 °C (32–95 °F) and warns that exposure above 35 °C (95 °F) can permanently reduce capacity. These are Apple’s recommendations for its devices, not a universal temperature specification for every phone. If an iPhone becomes hot while charging in a case, Apple advises removing the case.

Use optimized charging if your phone offers it
Apple says its optimized charging features adapt charging patterns to reduce battery aging. The available behavior, including any charge limit, depends on the device and software. Check the phone’s own settings and manufacturer guidance for the controls it supports.
What Apple’s cycle figures do—and do not—mean
Apple’s 2026 guidance says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. For iPhone 15 models and later, Apple gives a design figure of 80% at 1,000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. These are manufacturer design statements, not guarantees for an individual phone: Apple says actual capacity depends on how the device is regularly used and charged. When to seek battery service
Consider manufacturer or qualified service if the phone’s battery screen recommends replacement, an aged battery is affecting performance, or runtime remains poor after you check usage and settings. Apple directs owners whose iPhone performance is affected by an aged battery to Apple Support for service options. For other brands, consult the manufacturer’s service guidance for the exact model.
