To check how much capacity your battery has left, use the device’s built-in battery-health screen or report: iPhone has Battery Health, supported Pixel phones show Battery capacity, Windows 11 can generate a battery report, and Mac laptops show cycle count in System Information. The current charge percentage is different: it tells you how full the battery is right now, not how much it can hold compared with when it was new.
What battery health and remaining capacity mean
Maximum or remaining capacity is an estimate of how much charge a battery can hold relative to its capacity when new. A phone showing 100% charge can still have reduced maximum capacity. These estimates can vary with model, use, charging history, and calibration.

A cycle count is a separate measure of cumulative use equivalent to one full discharge. It does not mean the device was plugged in once: using half the battery, recharging, then using half again can add up to one cycle. Cycle count is useful context, but it is not a universal replacement verdict.

iPhone 15 and later
On iPhone 15 models and later running iOS 17.4 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says this screen includes maximum capacity and can also show a replacement recommendation, cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. See Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance.

iPhone 11, 12, 13, and 14
Open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging to see maximum capacity and peak-performance information. Apple’s design target is for iPhone 14 and earlier to retain 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. For iPhone 15 and later, the target is 80% at 1,000 complete cycles under ideal conditions. These are design targets, not a forecast for an individual phone or an automatic instruction to replace it.
Check battery health on Android
Google Pixel
Google documents a capacity screen for Pixel 8a and later: open Settings > Battery > Battery health, then select Battery capacity to see the estimated remaining capacity. The feature is not available on Pixel Tablet. Google says Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro do not indicate battery health status. Google labels battery health “Reduced” when estimated capacity is below 80% and recommends considering replacement. Its cycle guidance is model-specific: Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold are designed to retain up to 80% for about 800 cycles, while Pixel 8a and later are designed for about 1,000 cycles, when charged as recommended. These are not guarantees for an individual phone.

Android settings vary by manufacturer and model. Search Settings for “battery health,” or check the support page for the exact phone model. Do not assume a Pixel menu path or status display exists on another Android device.

Check battery health on a Windows laptop
Windows 11 includes a battery report that gives usage and estimated capacity information. Generate and open it as follows:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - In Command Prompt, note the saved report location and open the HTML file there.
- Start with Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage to review the reported battery details and usage.
This is a built-in diagnostic; no separate tester is required. Which fields appear can depend on the laptop’s battery and firmware reporting. Microsoft’s instructions apply to Windows 11: Caring for your battery in Windows.

Check battery information on a Mac laptop
To find a Mac laptop’s cycle count, hold Option while opening the Apple menu, choose System Information, then select Hardware > Power. The current cycle count appears under Battery Information. Apple’s cycle-count limits differ by Mac model, so identify the exact model and compare it with Apple’s Mac cycle-count table.

How to decide whether the battery needs service
There is no single replacement percentage or cycle count that applies to every phone and laptop. Use the device’s own status and manufacturer guidance, then consider whether the actual runtime meets your needs. A service or reduced-health message is a reason to review repair options; a high cycle count alone is not a diagnosis.
- If the device reports service or reduced health, follow the support guidance for that exact model.
- If runtime has become inadequate, weigh that practical impact alongside the health estimate and cycle count.
- If the battery is physically damaged or behaving abnormally, seek appropriate service rather than relying on a capacity reading.
Apple says built-in lithium-ion polymer batteries should be serviced by Apple or an authorized service provider; its service information covers MacBook, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries.
