How to Check Your Phone or Computer for Spyware—and Remove It Safely

Start with safety, not deletion. If you suspect spyware, stop entering passwords or financial details on that device, use a separate trusted device for help and account changes, and preserve evidence if a partner or ex-partner could be involved. Then update the operating system and security tools, run the appropriate scan, remove software you do not recognize, and secure your accounts from the clean device. A factory reset is the strongest consumer remedy for mobile stalkerware, but it erases local data and should follow a careful backup and evidence plan.

What spyware is—and why the removal order matters

Spyware is software that monitors or controls activity without your informed permission. The Federal Trade Commission describes spyware, also called stalkerware, as a program or app someone installs on a phone or another device without the owner’s knowledge. It may expose location, messages, email, photos, videos, browsing activity or account activity.

Ordinary malware is usually an infection or unwanted program. Stalkerware can be installed by someone with physical access to the device and may be part of coercive control. Removing it can alert the person monitoring you, destroy evidence or cut off access to accounts you need for safety. That is why the same technical symptom can require a different response depending on who may be behind it.

  • Possible criminal or unwanted malware: disconnect sensitive work from the suspected device, scan it, remove the threat and change credentials from a clean device.
  • Possible stalkerware or partner surveillance: plan with an advocate or law enforcement using a device the other person cannot monitor, preserve evidence first and choose the timing of a reset or replacement.

Do not treat any single symptom as proof. Battery wear, a poor network connection, a bad browser extension or a failing drive can look like spyware. A pattern of unexplained changes, account activity and someone knowing private details deserves investigation.

Warning signs on a phone

Sign What it can indicate Why it is not proof
Unusual battery drain A hidden process may be active in the background. Old batteries, weak signal and high-use apps also drain power.
Unexpected mobile-data use Monitoring data could be uploaded without your knowledge. Photo backup, video playback and app updates can create the same pattern.
Overheating while idle A background service may be using processor or network resources. Heat can follow charging, a hot environment or a demanding legitimate app.
Unexplained restarts Malware or a tampered configuration could be interfering with the system. Operating-system bugs, storage problems and hardware faults are common causes.
Another person knows exact location or private conversations Account access, location sharing or stalkerware may be involved. They may have learned the information another way; preserve evidence and investigate safely.

Also note unfamiliar apps, permissions that do not fit an app’s purpose, settings that change back after you correct them, or security notifications you did not trigger. Take screenshots or photographs from a separate camera if doing so will not increase your risk.

Warning signs on a computer or in a browser

  • Sudden slowdowns, freezes or crashes, especially when the computer is otherwise idle.
  • Persistent pop-ups, redirects, a changed homepage or search engine, or new toolbars and extensions.
  • Repeated system errors, disabled Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on macOS, or security software that will not open.
  • Messages, posts or email sent from your accounts without your action.
  • Browser extensions that return after removal, unfamiliar security sign-outs, or tabs that open by themselves.

Google’s malware-removal guidance lists persistent pop-ups and tabs, unwanted extensions, changed search settings, redirects, slow or malfunctioning devices and unexplained sign-outs as reasons to investigate. A browser symptom can be caused by an extension or account compromise rather than a system-level infection, so check both the device and the account.

Do these safety steps before scanning or deleting anything

  1. Stop sensitive activity on the suspected device. Do not enter banking credentials, recovery codes, medical information or a new password there. Malware can capture what you type even if the screen looks normal.
  2. Move communication to a clean device. Use a device you trust, a separate browser profile or an in-person support option. The FTC warns against contacting an advocate or law enforcement from a potentially monitored phone or computer.
  3. Decide whether evidence matters. If abuse, stalking, blackmail or workplace misconduct is possible, record dates, messages, account alerts, app names and unusual behavior before a reset. Store copies where the suspected person cannot access them.
  4. Keep the device powered only as needed. If turning it off is safer, do so. Do not confront a suspected abuser about the device based solely on a warning sign.
  5. Prepare a clean destination for account recovery. You will need a trusted phone or computer for password changes, two-factor authentication and support calls.

These precautions can feel excessive for ordinary adware, but they prevent the most damaging mistake: announcing a cleanup while the other person still controls the device or accounts.

Check and clean an Android phone

Review apps and permissions

  1. Open the installed-app list in Settings and look for apps you do not recognize, apps installed around the time the behavior began, or apps with vague names and unusually broad access.
  2. Open each suspicious app’s permissions. Pay particular attention to location, microphone, camera, contacts, SMS, accessibility and notification access. Revoke permissions that are not necessary for the app’s stated function.
  3. Uninstall an app you can identify as unwanted. If the uninstall control is unavailable, check whether it has device-administrator or other special access, remove that access, then try again.
  4. Install all available Android system and security updates. Updates close vulnerabilities that spyware may use and improve unwanted-tracking detection.

Android 6.0 and later provides unwanted-tracking detection, according to Apple’s safety guidance. Earlier devices should be updated when possible or can use Google’s Tracker Detect app for compatible Bluetooth-tracker checks. A tracker alert is different from proof of a spyware app: it identifies a nearby tracking device, not necessarily software on the phone.

When removal is uncertain

If a suspicious app cannot be removed confidently, preserve evidence and plan a factory reset rather than repeatedly experimenting on the phone. An IC3 advisory describes a factory reset as the only way to ensure permanent removal of a mobile spyware app. The reset deletes local photos, messages, files and settings, so complete the backup and account steps below first.

Check and clean an iPhone or iPad

  1. Update iOS or iPadOS before investigating further. Security fixes and tracker-detection improvements depend on the current version your device supports.
  2. Review the app list for unfamiliar software and remove apps you did not install or no longer trust.
  3. Check Apple Account device access and sharing settings from a trusted device. Remove unknown signed-in devices, review location sharing and verify recovery details.
  4. Review installed configuration profiles, device-management entries and unfamiliar permissions. A profile you do not recognize can change network, account or device behavior; obtain help before deleting one if the phone belongs to an employer or school.
  5. Pay attention to unwanted-tracking notifications. AirTag and Find My alerts are documented for iOS and iPadOS 14.5 or later. Unknown Bluetooth-tracker detection on iPhone requires iOS 17.5 or later.

If abuse is suspected, capture evidence before erasing the device. Removing an app or resetting immediately may stop monitoring but can also remove information useful to a safety plan or investigation.

Check and clean a Windows computer

Run the built-in protection in the right order

  1. Open Windows Security and update its security intelligence before scanning.
  2. Uninstall software you do not need from Settings > Apps. Remove only programs you can identify; do not delete a system component merely because its name is unfamiliar.
  3. Run a Full scan with Microsoft Defender Antivirus. A full scan checks files and running locations more broadly than a quick scan and can take considerably longer.
  4. If unwanted behavior persists, run Microsoft Defender Offline. It restarts the computer and scans before the normal Windows environment loads, which can prevent a persistent threat from hiding while Windows is running.
  5. Restart, install Windows and browser updates, and repeat the scan if the security tool reports that a threat was quarantined or removed.

Microsoft states that Defender can block malware, notify you and try to remove it when possible. No scan result is perfect: a clean result means the tool found nothing it could identify at that time, not that every account or hardware component is secure.

Check the browser separately

Remove extensions you do not recognize, restore the intended homepage and search engine, and inspect notification permissions for sites that send unwanted pop-ups. If an extension returns after removal, scan the computer again and review browser synchronization: a synced profile can reinstall settings on a clean browser. Change the associated account password from a trusted device after the computer is clean.

Check and clean a Mac

  1. Update macOS and installed browsers using Apple’s normal software-update process.
  2. Remove unsafe or unfamiliar applications and browser extensions. Check login items and account access for entries you did not add.
  3. Review browser homepage, search engine, notification permissions and extensions. A browser reset may be needed when settings keep changing.
  4. Run the security checks provided by macOS and your browser. Do not install a “support” utility offered by a pop-up; obtain support details independently.
  5. If compromise remains likely, back up only trusted personal files and erase and reinstall macOS using Apple’s current instructions.

Google’s guidance directs Mac users to remove unsafe software manually and use Apple support for further help. Keep documents, photos and other personal files, but do not copy suspicious installers, applications, browser extensions or configuration profiles into the clean installation.

Cleanup versus factory reset

Approach Use it when What it changes Main risk
Targeted cleanup A scan identifies a removable app, extension or file and there is no strong safety reason to erase the device. Removes the identified software while preserving most local data and settings. A hidden component or altered account may remain.
Factory reset on a phone Stalkerware cannot be confidently removed, the device remains compromised, or you need the strongest consumer remediation. Erases local apps, data and settings and returns the phone to its setup state. Data is lost; reinstalling the same app or restoring a contaminated backup can bring the problem back.
Erase and reinstall a computer Windows or macOS cleanup fails, system integrity is doubtful, or a trusted technician recommends a clean installation. Rebuilds the operating system from a clean installation while removing local software. Files, licenses and settings require careful backup and restoration.

A reset does not automatically secure online accounts. If someone knows your email password, recovery email, authentication codes or device passcode, they can regain access after the reset. Account lockdown is a separate step.

Back up safely before resetting

Back up irreplaceable photos, documents and contacts to a secure external hard drive or a vetted cloud service before erasing anything. CISA recommends encrypted backups and secure handling of copies. Keep the backup account and drive protected from the person who may be monitoring you.

  • Copy personal files selectively rather than cloning the entire device.
  • Do not restore suspicious apps, installers, browser extensions, configuration profiles or unknown management settings.
  • After the reset, reinstall apps individually from the official app store or vendor site and check each permission.
  • Update the operating system before restoring personal files and reconnecting sensitive accounts.

If evidence may be needed, make an evidence copy first and document when and how it was created. A reset performed before that step may permanently remove useful records.

Lock down accounts from a trusted device

  1. Change the email password first, because email is commonly used to reset other accounts.
  2. Change Apple, Google and Microsoft account passwords, followed by banking, payment, social and work accounts.
  3. Enable two-factor authentication. Prefer an authenticator app or security key when practical; keep recovery codes somewhere the suspected person cannot reach.
  4. Review signed-in devices, active sessions, app passwords, forwarding rules, recovery email addresses and phone numbers. Sign out devices you do not recognize.
  5. Run Google Security Checkup and the equivalent security review for each major account.
  6. Install operating-system, browser and app updates on the cleaned or replacement device.

Changing passwords on the suspected device can expose the new credentials, so perform this sequence only from a trusted device. If an account is controlled by an employer or school, involve its security team through an independently obtained contact method.

Built-in tools, third-party scans and professional help

Built-in tools first

Windows Security, Android and iOS settings, browser controls and operating-system updates are the safest starting points because they are integrated with the platform and can work before you install anything else. They can identify known malware, unwanted apps, risky permissions and tracker behavior, but they cannot prove that every form of surveillance is absent.

When an additional scanner is reasonable

Use an established security product only when you can obtain it from the developer’s genuine site or the device’s official store. Avoid “your computer is infected” pop-ups, unsolicited phone numbers and installers supplied by an unknown person. A second opinion can help when symptoms persist, but installing several scanners at once can create conflicts and does not replace account review or a reset.

When to call a manufacturer or technician

Contact the device manufacturer or a reputable technician from a separate trusted device if scans are inconclusive, the device remains compromised, you cannot remove an app or profile, or you need help preserving data. The FTC specifically recommends the manufacturer or a trusted technical-support company. Never call a number displayed in a pop-up; find the support address independently on the manufacturer’s official site or documentation.

Common situations and the safest response

“My battery is draining, so I must have spyware.”

Check battery use, recently updated apps, signal strength and battery health first. Drain alone is not diagnostic. Combine it with unexplained data use, settings changes, account alerts or someone knowing private information before escalating.

“A pop-up says to call support immediately.”

Close the browser, disconnect if necessary and do not call the displayed number or install its software. Run the platform’s own updates and scan, then obtain support contact details independently.

“I reset the phone, but the person still knows where I am.”

Review account sessions, location sharing, family or carrier access and Bluetooth trackers from a clean device. A reset removes local software; it does not revoke an account session or stop a separate tracking device.

“I cannot safely contact anyone from the phone.”

Use a friend’s device, a public computer that does not store your credentials, or an in-person support service. In an abuse situation, prioritize a safety plan over immediate technical cleanup.

When a reset or replacement is the better choice

Choose a reset or a new phone when stalkerware cannot be confidently identified and removed, security tools are disabled, the device keeps changing settings, or a trusted technician finds signs of persistent compromise. Preserve evidence first when appropriate, back up only trusted files, reset through the operating system’s official process and configure the device as new. Reinstall apps one at a time and watch permissions rather than restoring a complete device image.

A replacement phone can be safer when the existing device is physically controlled by another person, has an unsupported operating system or cannot be trusted after repeated cleanup. Keep the new device, its passcode and recovery methods private; otherwise the same account compromise can follow you.

Bottom line

Spyware checks are most reliable when you combine symptoms, scans, app and account reviews, and a clear safety plan. For ordinary malware, update, scan, remove and secure accounts. For suspected stalkerware, use a separate device, preserve evidence and plan the reset with personal safety in mind. Back up trusted files, never restore suspicious software, and treat a factory reset as a powerful cleanup step—not as a substitute for changing passwords and revoking account access.
