How to Check Your Phone for Spyware and Unauthorized Microphone Access

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Start with the phone’s own privacy records. On Android, open Settings > Security and Privacy (or Privacy) > Privacy Dashboard and select Microphone. On iPhone, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. Review which apps accessed the microphone, when they did so, and whether each app has a legitimate reason. A microphone dot or orange indicator proves sensor activity, not spyware; confirm the app, permission, and surrounding warning signs before taking action.

What spyware and stalkerware can do

The Federal Trade Commission defines stalkerware, also called spyware, as software that someone installs on a phone or another device without the owner’s knowledge. Depending on its permissions, it may track location, read texts and email, view photos and videos, monitor online activity, or activate the microphone to record conversations.

Unauthorized microphone access is therefore one possible symptom, not a complete diagnosis. A legitimate phone call, voice assistant, accessibility service, video chat, recorder, navigation app, or smart-home controller can also use the microphone. The useful question is not simply “Was the microphone active?” but “Which app used it, at what time, with what permission, and does that activity make sense?”

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Check the microphone in under five minutes

Phone Where to look What the record shows Additional check
Android 13 or later Settings > Security and Privacy (or Privacy) > Privacy Dashboard > Microphone Microphone permission activity from the prior seven days Tap the live microphone indicator or open Quick Settings to identify the active app; run Google Play Protect
Android 12 Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard > Microphone (wording varies by manufacturer) Microphone permission activity from the prior 24 hours Tap the indicator to see which app is using the sensor
iPhone Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone Which installed apps are allowed to use the microphone Watch the orange indicator, check Control Center for recent use, and review App Privacy Report

Menu names differ among Android manufacturers and software versions. If you cannot find “Security and Privacy,” search Settings for Privacy Dashboard or Microphone. An older Android release may not provide the same history window or indicator controls.

Android: inspect permission history and active use

1. Open Privacy Dashboard

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Security and Privacy or Privacy.
  3. Open Privacy Dashboard.
  4. Select Microphone. If you are investigating broader surveillance, repeat the check for Camera, Location, and other sensitive permissions.

Google’s Android guidance says Android 13 can display the preceding seven days of permission activity, while Android 12 displays the preceding 24 hours. The dashboard lists apps and the times they accessed the sensor. A short history window means an old event may no longer be visible, so check again after suspicious activity occurs.

2. Decide whether each entry is expected

Match the time to what you were doing. A video-call app appearing during a call is expected; a calculator or wallpaper app appearing while the phone was idle deserves investigation. Open an unfamiliar entry to view its permission controls. Consider the app’s developer, installation date, requested permissions, and whether you actually use it.

3. Revoke access or remove an unneeded app

For an app with no clear audio function, set microphone access to Don’t allow. Supported Android versions may also offer Allow only while using the app and Ask every time or Only this time. Use the narrowest option that still lets you use the app. If you do not recognize the app or have no reason to keep it, uninstall it after considering personal-safety risks described below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permission removal stops future microphone access through the normal Android permission system; it does not prove that every other account, device, or service is safe. Recheck the dashboard after changing the setting.

4. Identify a live microphone session

On Android 12 and later, a privacy indicator appears when an app uses the microphone or camera. Tap the microphone indicator to see the app, or open Quick Settings to inspect active or recently active sensor use. If the indicator appears while you are not making a call, recording, dictating, or using an assistant, note the time and app name, then check that app’s permissions and recent activity.

5. Run Google Play Protect

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture.
  3. Choose Play Protect.
  4. Run the scan and read any warning before deciding what to remove.

Google says Play Protect can warn when an app is harmful, may reset permissions on some Android versions, and can alert you when an app has been removed for accessing personal information. Treat it as an additional check, not as a guarantee that every form of stalkerware will be detected. The dashboard, app review, and account-security checks are still necessary.

iPhone: review grants, indicators, and App Privacy Report

1. Review every microphone grant

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap Microphone.
  4. Turn off access for any app that has no clear reason to record audio.

This screen is a permission list rather than the Android-style multi-day timeline. Use the app’s purpose and your own usage to judge whether a grant is appropriate. A messaging or video-call app may need it; a simple flashlight or static game generally should not.

2. Interpret the status indicators

Apple states that an orange indicator appears at the top of the screen whenever an app uses the microphone without the camera. A green indicator means the camera is in use, including when the camera and microphone are being used together. The indicator identifies sensor use, not intent or ownership of the app.

When you see the orange indicator, open Control Center. It can show recent microphone or camera use and may identify the app responsible. Compare that information with the action you were performing. If the app is unexpected, turn off its microphone permission and investigate its account, installation source, and other permissions.

3. Turn on App Privacy Report

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
  2. Tap App Privacy Report.
  3. Enable it if it is off, then return after it has collected activity.
  4. Review sensor access and network activity for patterns you do not recognize.

App Privacy Report adds context that the microphone-permission screen does not: when apps used sensors and which domains they contacted. A network connection is not proof of surveillance, and a familiar app may contact many services, but an unexpected combination of microphone use and unusual network activity is a reason to examine the app more closely.

How to interpret a microphone dot or orange indicator

  • It is a prompt, not a verdict. The indicator confirms that the operating system detected microphone use; it does not establish that an attacker is listening.
  • Check the app name immediately. Android lets you tap the indicator; iPhone users can open Control Center to see recent use.
  • Consider legitimate background functions. Calls, voice assistants, dictation, accessibility features, recording apps, and some connected-device controls can activate the microphone.
  • Record recurring events. Note the date, time, app, phone state, and what you were doing. Repeated access while the phone is idle is more useful evidence than a single event during a call.
  • Revoke first when appropriate. Turning off microphone access is reversible and limits further collection while you investigate.

Other warning signs—and why none is conclusive alone

The FTC identifies several reasons to investigate possible stalkerware:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Battery life suddenly becomes much shorter.
  • Mobile-data use rises without an obvious change in your habits.
  • The phone overheats while idle or performs unexplained restarts.
  • Another person knows your exact location, private conversations, messages, or searches.
  • Someone previously had unsupervised physical access to the phone.

Each symptom has benign explanations: an aging battery, a software update, poor reception, cloud synchronization, a misbehaving app, or a failing device. Corroborate symptoms with permission history, indicator events, installed-app review, and account activity. Do not label an app spyware solely because the phone is warm or the battery is low.

Find the source when the app name is unfamiliar

Check how the app arrived

Look through the installed-app list for recently added or rarely used software. An app with a generic name, no visible icon, an unknown developer, or permissions unrelated to its stated function merits extra scrutiny. Also check whether it came from the official app store, a work-management system, a family-safety service, or a sideloaded file. A legitimate employer or parent-control tool can still be unexpected on a personal phone.

Review more than the microphone

Spyware that gathers conversations may also request location, camera, contacts, accessibility services, notifications, storage, or device-administrator privileges. Repeat the Android Privacy Dashboard review for those permissions. On iPhone, inspect the corresponding controls under Privacy & Security, along with installed configuration profiles, device-management entries, and unfamiliar accounts. Do not delete a work or school profile until you know what services it controls.

Check accounts and physical access

A person can learn private information without microphone spyware by accessing a cloud account, forwarding messages, sharing a location, or knowing the phone passcode. Review signed-in devices and recent account-security events from a safer device when possible. Change the phone passcode and important account passwords, enable two-factor authentication, and update the operating system and apps.

Safety comes before removal

If a partner, family member, employer, or other person may be monitoring the phone, changing permissions or uninstalling an app can reveal that you are investigating. The FTC warns that removal can tip off an abusive person. Use another device to contact a trusted advocate or law enforcement, and avoid searching for help or making calls from the potentially monitored phone when possible.

  • Plan where you will store evidence and who can safely receive it.
  • Use a safer phone or computer for support resources and password changes.
  • Do not confront a suspected abuser based only on an indicator or a single app entry.
  • Consider whether disabling location sharing, changing a passcode, or removing a profile could create an immediate safety risk.

There is no universal safest sequence. A digital-safety advocate can help you balance evidence preservation, privacy, and personal safety for your situation.

When a reset or replacement is necessary

A factory reset can remove unwanted software, but it also erases data and may not solve a compromised online account. Back up essential photos, contacts, and documents in a way that does not expose them to the person you are concerned about. The FTC advises that, after a reset or replacement, you download apps again instead of restoring the old device backup, because the backup could reinstall stalkerware.

  1. From a safer device, secure your primary email, Apple or Google account, financial accounts, and messaging accounts.
  2. Enable two-factor authentication with a method the suspected person cannot control.
  3. Record evidence you may need before erasing the phone.
  4. Reset or replace the phone only when it is safe and practical.
  5. Install system updates, set a new passcode, and reinstall apps individually from the official store.
  6. Recheck microphone permissions before signing in to every account.

If the same private information continues to leak after a clean setup, investigate account access, shared services, forwarding rules, location sharing, and other devices rather than assuming the microphone is still compromised.

Android and iPhone: what each platform can tell you

Capability Android iPhone
Permission history Privacy Dashboard shows microphone access times; Android 13 covers seven days and Android 12 covers 24 hours The Microphone settings page shows which apps have permission; App Privacy Report adds sensor-access history after it is enabled
Live microphone alert Android 12 and later show an indicator that can be tapped to identify the app Orange indicates microphone use; green indicates camera use, including camera plus microphone
Recent-use view Indicator and Quick Settings can identify active or recently active use Control Center can show recent microphone or camera use
Network-activity context Not provided by Privacy Dashboard; inspect the app and account separately App Privacy Report includes network activity alongside sensor access
Built-in app scanning Google Play Protect can scan, warn, and in some cases reset permissions No equivalent single microphone-specific scan; rely on permission controls, App Privacy Report, updates, and app/account review
Removal risk Uninstalling or changing permissions may alert someone who installed the app Deleting apps, profiles, or accounts may also reveal the investigation; safety planning applies to both platforms

Troubleshooting common situations

The indicator disappears before you can identify the app

On Android, open Quick Settings immediately and inspect the privacy indicator. On iPhone, open Control Center for recent use. Then check the relevant history or report rather than relying on memory. If the event cannot be identified, note the time and repeat the check during the next occurrence.

An app needs the microphone, but only occasionally

Use “while using” or “ask every time” on Android when offered, and leave iPhone access off until you need the feature. Re-enable it for a call or recording, then disable it afterward if that fits your use.

You find no suspicious app, but private details still leak

Check account sessions, password reuse, email forwarding, shared cloud albums, location-sharing settings, linked messaging devices, and other phones or computers. Microphone access is only one route to personal information.

Play Protect reports nothing

A clean result means the scan did not flag an app under its detection rules. It does not prove that no one has access to an account, that a legitimate app is behaving appropriately, or that a device-management profile is safe. Continue with permission and account checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You are unsure whether removing an app is safe

Do not delete it immediately if doing so could escalate abuse or destroy evidence. Photograph or record the app name and permissions from a safer device, seek confidential advice, and choose a removal plan that protects you first.

A practical evidence checklist

  • Screenshot the permission entry, app name, developer, and access time.
  • Record the phone model, operating-system version, and date.
  • Save unusual battery, data, restart, or overheating observations with times.
  • Note who had physical access to the phone and when.
  • Preserve account-security alerts and unfamiliar sign-ins from a safer device.
  • Store copies where the suspected person cannot access them.

These records help a technician, advocate, or investigator distinguish a normal app event from a broader pattern without requiring you to rely on a single indicator.
