What you need to check
A Windows 11 support check has four separate parts:
- Version: the feature-release label, such as 24H2, 25H2, 26H1 or 26H2.
- Edition: usually Home or Pro on personal computers, or Enterprise/Education and related editions on managed or institution-owned computers.
- End of updates date: the date Microsoft stops servicing that version and edition.
- OS build: the installed build number, which you compare with the latest build listed for your version.
Checking only the version is not enough. Microsoft publishes different servicing deadlines for Home/Pro and Enterprise/Education, and a computer can remain on a supported version while still missing the newest monthly build.

Find your Windows 11 version in Settings
- Select Start.
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then select About.
- Scroll to Windows specifications.
- Record the entries for Edition, Version and OS build.
Microsoft’s documented path is exactly Start > Settings > System > About, followed by looking under Windows specifications for Version. The same area displays the other Windows specification fields you need for a support check. See Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 26H1 update history for the documented instructions.
What to copy from the About page
| Field | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Edition | Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro | Chooses the applicable support column. |
| Version | 24H2, 25H2, 26H1 or 26H2 | Identifies the feature release to look up. |
| OS build | 26100.9550, for example | Lets you compare the installed build with Microsoft’s latest-build listing. |
Write the values down exactly, including the “H” and the two-digit release number. Do not substitute the build number for the version: an OS build such as 26100.9550 and a version such as 24H2 answer different questions.
Use winver for a faster check
- Select Search on the taskbar.
- Type
winver. - Press Enter.
Windows opens the About Windows dialog. It provides a quick way to identify the installed Windows release and build. If the dialog does not show the edition clearly, open Settings > System > About as well and copy the Edition field from there. Microsoft documents the winver alternative in the same support instructions linked above.

Match the version and edition to Microsoft’s support table
- Open Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information page.
- Find the row matching your installed Version.
- Use the column for your Edition. Home, Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations use the Home/Pro servicing column; Enterprise and Education use the Enterprise/Education column where listed.
- Read the corresponding End of updates date.
- Compare your installed OS build with the row’s Latest build. Treat this as a separate currency check.
The table is a live Microsoft resource. The snapshot below was accessed on October 13, 2026, and should not be treated as a permanent calendar.
Windows 11 versions and support dates shown on October 13, 2026
| Version | Latest build shown | Home/Pro, Pro Education and Pro for Workstations | Enterprise/Education and listed related editions |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26H2 | 26300.9550 | October 10, 2028 | October 9, 2029 |
| 26H1 | 28000.3086 | March 14, 2028 | March 13, 2029 |

| 23H2 | 22631.7584 | End of updates | November 10, 2026 |
Microsoft’s lifecycle pages express support dates in Pacific Time. If a deadline is close, account for the time-zone wording and consult the live table rather than relying on a copied date.
How to interpret “supported” and “up to date”
Supported version
A version is supported when today’s date is before the end-of-updates date for your edition. Support status is therefore a combination of version, edition and date. For example, the 24H2 row has different deadlines: Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education remain supported until October 12, 2027.
Latest installed build
The Latest build column answers whether Microsoft lists a newer build for that release. Your computer can show a supported version but an older OS build. Conversely, matching a build number does not extend a version’s lifecycle after its edition-specific end date.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →End of updates
At end of updates, Microsoft no longer provides the normal servicing listed for that release and edition. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 notice says that devices reaching the 24H2 Home/Pro deadline stop receiving fixes for known issues, time-zone updates, technical support, and monthly security and preview updates containing protections against the latest security threats. The notice is available in KB5124010.
What the 24H2 deadline means
Windows 11 24H2 requires particular attention because its deadline differs by edition. A 24H2 Home or Pro computer reaches end of updates on October 13, 2026. A 24H2 Enterprise or Education computer remains supported until October 12, 2027. These are not interchangeable dates; identify the edition before deciding that an upgrade is urgent or unnecessary.

If your 24H2 Home or Pro device is still in use on or after the applicable deadline, the practical issue is not merely the label in About. It is the loss of the servicing described in Microsoft’s notice, including monthly security updates and protections against current security threats. Check the live release table for the supported target available to your device and follow your organization’s deployment process if the PC is managed.
Special case: Windows 11 26H1
Do not assume that every existing PC can upgrade to the newest numbered release shown in the table. Microsoft describes 26H1 as a release available only on select new devices. It is not offered through Windows Update or as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2 on existing devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Microsoft also says 26H1 devices will not move to the next annual feature update planned for the second half of 2026 because 26H1 uses a different Windows core. Microsoft says those devices will have a path in a future Windows release. The dedicated explanation is on Microsoft’s Windows 11, version 26H1 page.
This exception prevents a common mistake: seeing 26H1 at the top of a release list and treating it as the normal destination for every 24H2 or 25H2 installation. Availability depends on the device, not just the number displayed in the release table.
Worked examples
Suppose a personal laptop reports Windows 11 Home, version 24H2. On the October 13, 2026 table, Home uses the Home/Pro column, whose end-of-updates date is October 13, 2026. If the check is performed after that date, the laptop is outside normal servicing even if its OS build is 26100.9550. The next step is to consult the live table for a supported release and use the normal upgrade route available to that device.
Now consider a company desktop showing Windows 11 Enterprise, version 24H2. The Enterprise/Education column gives it a later end-of-updates date, October 12, 2027. That does not mean the desktop is fully current: its installed build still needs to be compared with 26100.9550, and the company’s update policy may delay or stage that build.
A third example is a new computer labeled 26H1. It can legitimately show that version even though an older 24H2 or 25H2 computer cannot be upgraded to it through Windows Update. Treat the device-specific availability rule as separate from the lifecycle dates in the table.
Build numbers, cumulative updates and timing
The build check is a point-in-time comparison, not a permanent certification. Microsoft can publish a newer build after you record the current one. Record the date of your check beside the build, especially when documenting several PCs. If the installed number is lower than the listed latest build, the release may still be supported; the difference indicates that the machine is behind on updates, not automatically that its feature version has expired.
Conversely, an exact build match cannot make an expired release supported. Always read the edition-specific end-of-updates date first, then compare builds. This two-step order avoids declaring an out-of-support installation safe merely because it has the last build Microsoft listed for that release.

When an update is not offered
Windows Update availability is not the same thing as Microsoft’s public lifecycle date. A managed organization may defer, test or schedule feature updates. Hardware or device targeting can also explain why 26H1 is absent from an existing PC. Do not repeatedly force an upgrade simply because a newer version appears in the release table.

A complete support-status worksheet
Use this sequence when you need a record for yourself, technical support or an inventory system:
- From Settings > System > About, copy Edition.
- Copy Version, preserving the exact H1 or H2 label.
- Copy OS build.
- Open Microsoft’s release-information table and select the row for that version.
- Choose the support column corresponding to the edition.
- Write down the listed end-of-updates date.
- Compare the installed OS build with the table’s latest build.
- Record the check date, because Microsoft can publish a newer build or change the live table.
A useful record has four lines: “Edition,” “Version,” “OS build” and “End of updates.” Keeping the check date beside those lines prevents an old screenshot or ticket from being mistaken for a current status.
Common results and what to do next
Your version is supported and your build matches
The release and edition are still within their servicing period, and the installed build matches the latest build shown for that row at the time you checked. Recheck periodically because the latest-build value changes as Microsoft publishes updates.
Your version is supported but your build is older
The lifecycle deadline has not passed, but the PC is not at the latest build listed for that release. Use the device’s normal Windows update process or contact the administrator responsible for the PC. Do not describe the computer as fully current solely because the version is supported.
Your version has reached end of updates
The edition-specific servicing period has ended. Consult the current Microsoft release table for the supported release path for that device. On a work or school computer, do not force a feature upgrade without checking the organization’s policy.
The release table has a different edition category than your PC
Return to the About page and verify the Edition field. Home and Pro do not use the same deadline as Enterprise and Education. If the computer is centrally managed, ask the administrator which edition and deployment channel apply.
The PC shows 26H1 but you expected a regular upgrade
Apply the 26H1 exception: it is targeted to select new devices and is not an in-place upgrade offered to existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs. Use Microsoft’s 26H1 information page rather than assuming the next annual update applies in the usual way.

Managed work and school PCs
Organizations can control update timing and upgrade eligibility through their management policies. The edition still determines which Microsoft support column applies, but the administrator may schedule, defer or test updates before making them available. If Settings does not offer an expected release, or an administrator has given you a deadline that differs from the public table, ask the organization’s IT team which policy governs the device.
When contacting IT, provide the Edition, Version and OS build from the About page, plus the date on which you checked Microsoft’s table. Those details let the administrator distinguish a lifecycle issue from a deployment delay.
Troubleshooting the version check
Settings does not open the About page
Use the documented winver route: select taskbar Search, type winver and press Enter. If that dialog does not expose the edition clearly, return to Settings when it is available and copy the Edition field.
You find a build number but no obvious version
Do not infer the version from the build alone. The version is a separate Windows specification. Navigate to Settings > System > About and look specifically under Windows specifications for Version.
The latest-build number looks newer than your installed build
That result means the release table lists a newer build for your version; it does not automatically mean the version is unsupported. Check the end-of-updates column first, then use the normal update channel or your administrator’s process to investigate why the build is behind.
Your edition is unclear on a shared or refurbished PC
Use the Edition field rather than the seller’s description or a remembered product key. Support dates are tied to the installed edition. If the label is still unclear, preserve a screenshot or copy the complete Windows specifications block for the person providing support.
Why the release table should be your final authority
Windows release names and build numbers change over time, and Microsoft maintains separate lifecycle entries by edition. A search result, old article or saved screenshot can omit a later build or an edition-specific date. The live release information table combines the version, latest build and end-of-updates columns needed for a current check.
Use Microsoft Support’s procedural page for the navigation steps, the release-information table for lifecycle and build matching, the September 22, 2026 update notice for the 24H2 consequences, and the 26H1 page for the device-availability exception. Together, those pages answer the four questions a version check must separate: what is installed, which edition it is, whether the release is still supported, and whether the installed build is current.
Quick checklist
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Record Edition, Version and OS build.
- Alternatively, run
winverfrom taskbar Search. - Find the matching version in Microsoft’s live release table.
- Use the edition-specific support column.
- Compare today’s date with End of updates.
- Compare your OS build with Latest build.
- Remember that 26H1 is limited to select new devices and is not an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2.
- Ask your organization’s administrator before changing a managed PC.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check which version of Windows 11 I have?
Open Start > Settings > System > About and look under Windows specifications for Version. For a faster check, search for winver on the taskbar and press Enter.
Best Value
Why do I need to check the edition as well as the version?
Microsoft gives Home/Pro and Enterprise/Education different end-of-updates dates for some releases. The same version can therefore be supported on one edition and out of support on another.
Does having the latest OS build mean my PC is supported?
No. The build indicates update currency within a release. Support also depends on the version, edition and applicable end-of-updates date.
When does Windows 11 24H2 stop receiving updates?
On Microsoft’s table accessed October 13, 2026, Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. Enterprise and Education remain supported until October 12, 2027. Confirm the current dates in Microsoft’s live release table.

Can my existing PC upgrade to Windows 11 26H1?
Microsoft says 26H1 is available only on select new devices. It is not offered through Windows Update or as an in-place update from 24H2 or 25H2 on existing PCs.
Why does my work computer show an older build than Microsoft’s table?
Your organization may defer, test or stage updates through its management policy. Give IT the Edition, Version, OS build and date of your check so it can determine whether the delay is intentional.
Which date should I use if the deadline is close to midnight?
Microsoft lifecycle pages specify Pacific Time for support dates. When the deadline is close, use the time-zone wording on the live Microsoft page instead of relying on a converted or copied date.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings > System > About or winver to record your Windows 11 edition, version and OS build. Then match the version and edition to Microsoft’s live release table, check the edition-specific end-of-updates date, and compare the installed build with the listed latest build. Treat 26H1 as a select-device release, and consult your organization before changing a managed PC.
