Recommended Free Tools
For a federal refund, open IRS.gov yourself and use Where’s My Refund? (or the IRS2Go app or automated telephone service). Have the SSN or ITIN, filing status, tax year and exact whole-dollar refund amount from the filed return ready. For a state refund, use the revenue or taxation agency’s official website. Never enter tax identifiers after following an unsolicited text, email or social-media link.
What the refund-status tools actually tell you
A refund tracker reports where the return is in the processing pipeline; it is not a live bank-transfer monitor. The federal IRS tool uses three statuses: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Once the return is processed and approved, the IRS provides a personalized refund date. A status becoming available does not mean the refund has already been approved or paid.

The federal guidance discussed here applies to individual U.S. income-tax refunds. A state return follows a separate process, and the correct website, questions and timing depend on the state.

- Your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
- The filing status used on the return, such as single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, head of household or qualifying surviving spouse, when applicable.
- The tax year you are checking.
- The exact refund amount shown on the filed return, entered as whole dollars.
Do not estimate the refund, round a different figure or substitute the amount from a draft return. A mismatch can prevent the tracker from finding the return even when the return was filed correctly.
How to check a federal refund safely
1. Start at IRS.gov, not a message link
- Open your browser and type IRS.gov yourself, or use a bookmark you created from the official site.
- From the IRS website, open the refund-status page and select Where’s My Refund?.
- Do not use a refund link delivered in an unexpected text, email or social-media message. Close the message and navigate to IRS.gov independently instead.
The IRS refund page also identifies its official IRS2Go app and automated refund hotline. Those are alternatives to the web tracker, not third-party services.
2. Enter only the requested return details
Provide the SSN or ITIN, filing status, tax year and exact whole-dollar refund amount from the filed return. Because these details identify both you and your tax filing, enter them only in the official IRS route you reached directly. Do not send them to someone who contacts you asking to “release” or “verify” a refund.
3. Check at the right time for your filing method and year
The tracker is not available immediately for every return. The IRS’s current guidance gives different waiting periods:

| Return situation | When the tracker generally becomes available |
|---|---|
| Current-year return filed electronically | Generally 24 hours after e-filing |
| Prior-year return filed electronically | Generally three or four days after e-filing |
| Paper return mailed | Generally four weeks after mailing |
These are availability windows for the status service, not promises that the refund will arrive on those dates. Checking before the applicable window can produce no record even when the IRS has received the filing.
4. Read the stage and any personalized date
Once the return is found, note the exact stage and instructions displayed. A personalized refund date appears after processing and approval. Save or print the result if you need a record, but do not post a screenshot containing your taxpayer information publicly.
Understanding each federal status
Return Received
This means the IRS has received the return and it is in the processing queue. It is not an approval decision. The IRS may still verify calculations, identity or information reported on the return.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRefund Approved
The IRS has completed the relevant processing and approved a refund. The tracker supplies a personalized date for the refund. Your bank’s posting time can still affect when funds become visible after the IRS sends them.

Refund Sent
The IRS has sent the refund using the delivery method associated with the return. If the money is not visible after the date shown, check the account or address information on the filed return and follow the instructions in the tracker rather than submitting sensitive information to a caller or message sender.
How long a refund usually takes
The IRS says most refunds are issued within 21 days. That is a general expectation, not a guaranteed delivery deadline. The actual interval depends on when the return was received, whether additional review is needed, the filing method, the delivery method and the accuracy or completeness of the information.
A tracker that remains on an earlier stage does not by itself prove that a return is lost. Use the timing window for your filing method first, then read the tracker’s specific instructions. Avoid repeatedly submitting a new return merely because the status has not changed.

What can delay or interrupt a refund
The IRS identifies several reasons a refund may take longer or require action:
Rank #4
- TurboTax Desktop Edition is download software which you install on your computer for use
- Requires Windows 11 or macOS Sonoma or later (Windows 10 not supported)
- Recommended if you are self-employed, an independent contractor, freelancer, small business owner, sole proprietor, or consultant
- Includes 5 Federal e-files and 1 State via download. State e-file sold separately. Get U.S.-based technical support (hours may vary)
- Live Tax Advice: Connect with a tax expert and get one-on-one advice and answers as you prepare your return (fee applies)
- Mistakes or incomplete information on the return.
- Additional processing or review.
- Possible identity theft or fraud connected with the filing.
- Certain credit claims that require extra verification.
If the tracker displays a problem, follow its directions exactly. The IRS says it will contact taxpayers by mail when it needs more information. Treat an unexpected request for tax information by phone, text, email or social media as unverified; return to IRS.gov and use the instructions shown there.
When the status has not changed
- Confirm that you selected the correct tax year and filing status.
- Re-enter the refund amount exactly as shown on the filed return, in whole dollars.
- Check that enough time has passed for the return’s filing method.
- Read every message in the tracker for a requested action or document.
- Watch the mailing address used on the return for an IRS notice.
Do not infer a denial from a delay alone. A delayed return can still result in an approved refund after processing or review.
How to check a state income-tax refund
State refunds are handled by the individual state revenue or taxation agency, not by the federal IRS tracker. Go to your state government’s official website and look for its income-tax refund-status page. Use the state’s own instructions for the return year, identifying information and contact options.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Because no state is specified here, there is no single state URL, set of required fields or timing estimate that applies nationwide. Confirm that the web address belongs to the state agency before entering a Social Security number or other tax information. A state status may update independently of a federal status because the returns are processed by different authorities.

Choosing the right route at a glance
| Question | Use this route | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Is this a federal individual income-tax refund? | IRS.gov’s Where’s My Refund?, IRS2Go or the IRS automated hotline | The IRS controls federal processing and status information. |
| Is this a state income-tax refund? | The relevant state revenue or taxation agency’s official website | Each state operates its own tracker and rules. |
| Was the return e-filed or mailed? | Use the availability window for that filing method | The tracker may not show a record immediately. |
| Is the return current-year or prior-year? | Select the matching tax year in the tracker | Electronic prior-year returns have a different initial waiting period. |
Safe-use rules for refund tracking
- Navigate independently. Type IRS.gov or the state agency’s official address instead of clicking an unsolicited refund link.
- Limit disclosure. Enter your SSN or ITIN and refund details only in the official tracker, app or telephone route.
- Use the filed return as the source of truth. The filing status and exact refund figure must match the submitted return.
- Verify the jurisdiction. Federal and state refunds use different agencies and different status systems.
- Follow on-screen instructions. If the tracker requests action, use the agency’s stated process and retain any notice you receive.
- Do not pay to unlock a status. The official federal status options are the IRS web tool, IRS2Go and its automated hotline; a third party is not required to check a status.
Common situations and the correct response
“I filed electronically today and see nothing.”
Wait until the current-year electronic-return availability period has passed, then verify the tax year, filing status and exact refund amount. A result that is not yet displayed is not proof that the filing failed.
“My paper return was mailed weeks ago.”
Use the paper-return waiting period as the first checkpoint. If the status remains unavailable after that period, check the tracker again with the return’s exact details and look for any IRS correspondence.
“The tracker says Return Received for a long time.”
That stage means processing is still underway. Review the tracker for a specific request, and monitor your mail for an IRS notice. Additional review, incomplete information, certain credits or identity concerns can extend processing.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“Someone texted that my refund is waiting.”
Do not open the message’s refund link or enter tax information. Navigate to IRS.gov yourself and check through the official route. If it is a state refund, independently open the state agency’s website.
“Federal and state statuses do not match.”
That can occur because federal and state returns are processed separately. Check each jurisdiction’s official tracker and follow its own timing and notice instructions.
A quick checklist before you submit a status request
- Am I on IRS.gov or my state tax agency’s official website?
- Am I checking the correct jurisdiction and tax year?
- Do I have the filed return’s SSN or ITIN, filing status and exact whole-dollar refund amount?
- Has the appropriate waiting period passed for e-filing or paper filing?
- Have I read the tracker’s complete message and recorded any personalized date?
- If there is a delay, have I followed the tracker’s directions and watched for agency mail?
Bottom line for a safe check
Use the government agency that processed the return, reach it by navigating directly, and match every answer to the filed return. For federal refunds, that means IRS.gov’s Where’s My Refund?, IRS2Go or the automated hotline; for state refunds, it means the state revenue or taxation agency. The tracker’s stage and personalized date are more reliable than an unsolicited message or a generic promise about when money will arrive.
