How to Check Your Household Water Use and Find Leaks

Start with your water bill, then check the meter with all water use stopped. If the reading changes, test toilets and inspect visible plumbing and outdoor equipment to narrow down the source. These checks can reveal unusual use without special tools; meter locations, billing units and utility services vary by location.

Compare your water bills

Compare the latest bill with the bill for the same month last year. Matching months helps account for seasonal changes, such as summer irrigation or filling a pool. Check the billing period and units too, since utilities do not all bill on the same schedule or in the same units.

A sudden increase is a reason to investigate, not proof of a leak. Changes in household occupancy, weather, outdoor watering or billing dates can also affect use. EPA WaterSense says that more than 12,000 gallons per month in winter may indicate a serious leak for a family of four, particularly in a home that does not use water outdoors in winter. Treat that as a screening clue, not a universal household limit. EPA Home Maintenance

Check the meter for ongoing water use

A meter check can show whether water is flowing when nobody is using it. EPA says meters are commonly near the curb outside or inside the home, including in a basement. If you cannot find or safely access yours, or cannot read it clearly, contact your water utility for help. EPA Fix a Leak Week

  1. Turn off faucets and make sure water-using appliances and irrigation are not running.
  2. Record the meter reading, including any small leak-detection dial if your meter has one.
  3. Wait two hours without using water, then read the meter again.
  4. If the reading has changed, water may still be flowing somewhere. Check toilets, fixtures and outdoor equipment; if the result is unclear or conflicts with your bill, ask the utility to help interpret it.

Meter displays differ, so note the units and digits shown rather than assuming every dial or display works the same way. A changed reading identifies ongoing flow, but does not by itself locate the source.

Test toilets for silent leaks

A toilet can leak from its tank into the bowl without making an obvious sound. Put a few drops of food coloring or a dye tablet in the tank and wait about 10 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, water is passing from the tank. Flush after the test to clear the dye and avoid staining. EPA Home Maintenance

A worn flapper is a common cause. Look for visible wear, but do not assume it is the only possible fault: a fill valve or another tank component may be responsible. If replacing a visibly worn flapper does not stop the leak, inspect further only if you are comfortable doing so, or call a plumber. Check the toilet’s compatibility before buying a replacement flapper.

Inspect visible indoor and outdoor plumbing

After checking the toilet, look for dampness, drips or mineral deposits that may indicate a slow leak. EPA identifies dripping faucets and leaking valves, along with worn toilet flappers, as common household leaks. EPA Fix a Leak Week

YoLink Water Leak Sensor 1 Kit: 4-Pack + Hub
  • Complete plug-and-play kit: hub plus Leak Sensor 1 units for whole-home coverage at toilets, sinks, water heaters, laundry, dishwashers, and sump areas.
  • Long-range LoRa: reliable coverage where Wi-Fi struggles (up to 2,034 feet open air); get app, email, and SMS/text alerts and name sensors by location.
  • Works even without internet: with YoLink Control-D2D, sensors can directly trigger YoLink sirens or shutoff valves for local protection during outages.
  • Silent design: Leak Sensor 1 has no built-in siren; add SpeakerHub or a YoLink siren for audible or spoken alerts if desired.
  • Scalable IoT platform: one hub supports 300+ YoLink devices; part of a whole smart home/building ecosystem; hub options include standard Hub, SpeakerHub, and Cellular Hub.
  • Check faucet gaskets and pipe fittings, especially beneath sinks.
  • Look around tub spouts, showerhead connections and hose spigots.
  • Inspect sprinkler heads, irrigation valves and other outdoor watering equipment; an irrigation fault can increase use even when indoor fixtures appear dry.

For additional context, EPA estimates that household leaks account for nearly 10,000 gallons of water per year on average. That is an EPA estimate, not a prediction of how much a particular home is losing. EPA also says that fixing easily corrected household leaks can save homeowners about 10 percent on water bills; actual savings depend on the leak and local rates. Choose a repair, a plumber or utility help

Match the response to what you found. A straightforward visible issue may be suitable for a simple repair; an unidentified, hidden or damaging leak calls for professional help. EPA notes that some faucet or showerhead-connection repairs may use basic tools or pipe tape, but that is not a reason to force a repair beyond your skills. EPA Home Maintenance

  • Extremely Long Range: Powered by LoRa technology, the long-range low-power system offers the industry’s longest receiving range (1968 ft). Areas such as basements and sheds connect up to 100 sensors to deliver product information smoothly.
  • High Sensitivity: This water leak detector is equipped with 2 top sensor probes and 4 bottom sensor probes to detect water leaks and drips. When a water leak occurs, it will activate an alarm up to100dB.
  • IP66 Waterproof: The IP66 waterproof rating allows long-term use in wet/damp areas, such as near or under, toilets, water heaters, laundry machines, dishwashers, sinks, fish tanks, in or near sump pumps, and by any other location subject to water leaks and flooding. One battery can last over 5 years under normal usage, so you can use it with confidence.
  • Consider a simple repair when the source is visible, the part is accessible and you can safely complete the work. For a suspected toilet leak, confirm the flapper is worn and check whether the leak stops after replacing it.
  • Contact a plumber if the leak is hidden, you cannot identify its source, the repair is beyond your ability or water damage is occurring.
  • Contact your water utility about unexplained high use, an uncertain meter reading or any leak alerts it may offer. Utility services and programs vary by location.

If you are replacing a fixture rather than repairing it, WaterSense-labeled products are one option to consider. EPA says WaterSense-labeled products are independently certified to use at least 20 percent less water while performing as well as or better than standard models. That figure applies to qualifying labeled products, not to a home’s total water use. Confirm the exact product’s current certification and ask your utility whether local incentives are available. When a leak detector may be worth considering

Optional monitoring can help spot a leak between manual checks, but device types do different jobs. EPA distinguishes moisture sensors, which alert when they detect unexpected dampness at a monitored location, from flow monitors, which analyze water-use patterns for leaks or other irregularities. Some flow-monitoring systems may also offer automatic shutoff. EPA leak-device guide

Device type What it monitors What to check before choosing
Moisture sensor Dampness near the sensor’s placement Where sensors must be placed, how alerts are sent, maintenance needs and whether the locations you want to protect are covered
Flow monitor Water-use patterns that may indicate a leak or another irregularity Installation requirements, plumbing compatibility, alert method and whether automatic shutoff is included

Before buying, decide whether you need protection at a specific leak-prone spot or monitoring of overall household flow. Compare installation needs, alert options, maintenance and price. No device category guarantees detection of every leak, and automatic shutoff is not available on every model. EPA describes selection considerations but does not establish a best brand or model.
