To check an existing GST registration, use the GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer function and enter the GSTIN or UIN. To track a registration application you have already filed, sign in and go to Services > Registration > Track Application Status with the application reference number (ARN). To update business details, first identify the field: a principal or additional business address is a core amendment, while eligible signatory and stakeholder changes use the non-core amendment route.
Choose the right GST status check
The GST Portal provides separate tools for looking up an existing taxpayer and following an application. Start by asking what you want to verify: the profile attached to an issued GSTIN or UIN, or the progress of an application you have already filed. The two tasks use different identifiers and different portal functions.

| What you need to check | Portal function | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| The registration profile linked to an existing taxpayer identifier | Search Taxpayer | GSTIN or UIN |
| Progress of a registration application you submitted | Services > Registration > Track Application Status | Application reference number (ARN) |
A taxpayer search does not track a pending application, and an application-status search is not a substitute for checking the details attached to an issued GSTIN. If you are checking a business you deal with, use the GSTIN or UIN associated with that business. If you are waiting for a decision on your own filed application, keep the ARN from its filing acknowledgement available instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
This distinction also helps avoid a common dead end: searching for a new application in the public taxpayer profile lookup may not answer whether that application is progressing, while using an ARN in place of a GSTIN does not verify an existing taxpayer profile. Match the tool to the identifier before you begin.

How to check an existing GST registration
- Open the GST Portal and select Search Taxpayer. The pre-login search is available for public lookup.
- Enter the GSTIN or UIN for the taxpayer and submit the search.
- Check that the result corresponds to the business you intended to find. Review the legal name and trade name, if shown, along with the registration details relevant to your query.
The official portal tutorial says the pre-login result can show the GSTIN or UIN, legal and trade names, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, cancellation date if applicable, and details of returns filed. Additional data is available after logging in.
These fields let you compare the identifier with the business profile rather than relying on a name alone. For instance, check the legal name and trade name and compare the principal place of business if those details matter to your verification. The constitution of business and effective registration date are also part of the information the pre-login lookup can display. If a cancellation date appears, note that the result includes cancellation information where applicable.
The returns information is another part of the profile lookup, but it does not turn the search into an application tracker. Likewise, the fact that more information is available after login does not change the basic purpose of the pre-login search: it looks up an existing taxpayer identifier. Use the account’s application-tracking function for the status of a submitted registration application.

One-click scans. No signup required.
This lookup is useful for checking the public profile associated with an identifier. It does not establish the status of a separate application that has not yet resulted in a registration. If the information you need is not part of the pre-login display, sign in to see whether additional data is available.
How to track a submitted registration application
- Sign in to the GST Portal.
- Open Services > Registration > Track Application Status.
- Enter the ARN from the application filing acknowledgement and follow the portal’s displayed status information.
Keep the ARN from the acknowledgement available; it is the reference used to track the filed application. The official application tutorial identifies this portal command for tracking. It does not establish a single decision date that applies to every application, so do not rely on a universal processing-time estimate.
Make sure you are using the ARN from the application you intend to follow. A GSTIN or UIN belongs with the taxpayer lookup, while the ARN belongs with the application-status route. If you have filed an application and are unsure which reference to use, check the filing acknowledgement for the ARN rather than treating a taxpayer identifier as an application number.
Use the status shown in the account as your guide to the application’s progress. Do not assume that a particular number of days guarantees a decision: the official material identifies how to track the application but does not set out one reliable timeline for every case and jurisdiction.

Classify the field before changing business details
GST registration amendments are divided into core and non-core fields. This is not just a difference in menu names: the route determines whether the change is subject to tax-officer approval and whether the field can be amended in that form. Before opening an amendment, identify the specific information that needs to change and match it to the appropriate route.
| Amendment route | Examples covered | Approval described by GSTN |
|---|---|---|
| Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields | Principal place of business and additional places of business, other than a change of state | Requires tax-officer approval |
| Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields | Eligible authorized-signatory and stakeholder details, including promoters, partners, or karta | Automatically approved after successful filing; no tax-officer processing is described |
The comparison is procedural rather than commercial. The key questions are what kind of field is changing, whether officer approval is required, and whether the portal makes that field editable in the chosen form. The core route includes the principal and additional places of business; the non-core tutorial describes eligible signatory and stakeholder information.
Use the portal’s field classification rather than choosing a form based on what seems administratively simpler. In particular, the non-core tutorial expressly says an address change cannot be made through the non-core application. Automatic approval for a non-core filing does not make that form a shortcut for a core change, nor does it mean every registration detail is eligible for that route.
One field that needs particular care is the legal name. The portal manual gives specific conditions and directs legal-name updates through the core amendment route in some contexts. Do not infer that every legal-name change has identical eligibility or treatment; check the conditions shown for the particular registration and proposed change.
Change a principal or additional business address
A change to the principal place of business or an additional place of business belongs in the core amendment route. GSTN’s Welcome Kit for New Taxpayers identifies these business-place details as core amendment information and says core amendments require tax-officer approval. An address change is therefore not a non-core update, even if the change seems straightforward or involves only one location.
- Sign in to the GST Portal using the taxpayer account.
- Select Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields.
- Locate the relevant business-place details and enter the change requested by the portal.
- Complete the verification and filing steps presented in the account, then retain the filing acknowledgement for your records.
- Check the amendment’s status through the portal and wait for the applicable review outcome before treating the amended registration details as approved.
Follow the prompts displayed for the account when entering and verifying the amendment. The official material establishes the core route and officer-review requirement, but it does not provide a single set of field-by-field instructions for every account or a universal processing-time promise. Retain the acknowledgement so you can refer to the filing when checking its status.
The portal’s non-core form is not an alternative for an address update. Also, the cited core-field description excludes a change of state from the additional-place example; the material here does not establish the correct treatment for every state-change situation. If the business is moving across state lines, confirm the applicable requirement with the GST Portal or a qualified GST practitioner before filing rather than forcing the change into the wrong amendment form.

Do not treat submission as confirmation that the address has been amended. A core amendment requires tax-officer approval, so check the status and applicable review outcome before relying on the new registration details. The reviewed official information does not support promising how long that review will take in a particular jurisdiction.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Update eligible non-core details
Authorized-signatory and certain stakeholder details can be amended through the non-core route. The GST Portal tutorial gives stakeholder examples including promoters, partners, and karta. GSTN’s tutorial says that a successfully filed non-core amendment is automatically approved and reflected in the registration particulars, without processing by a tax official.
- Sign in to the GST Portal.
- Choose Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Non-Core Fields.
- Select the eligible field that needs updating, such as authorized-signatory or stakeholder information.
- Enter the revised information and complete the verification and authentication prompts shown for the taxpayer’s account. The authorized signatory may need to authenticate the filing.
- Submit the amendment and retain the filing acknowledgement. After successful filing, check the registration particulars for the updated details.
The examples are not permission to place any desired change in the non-core form. The portal determines which fields are available under that route; select the eligible field that corresponds to the actual change and follow the account-specific prompts. If the field is not offered there, do not use a different field or route just to submit something.
Automatic approval applies to a successfully filed non-core amendment as described by the GST Portal tutorial; it does not mean that every field can be changed in this form or that an incomplete filing has been accepted. The portal may require verification and authentication by the authorized signatory. Follow the prompts currently displayed for the taxpayer’s account and retain the filing acknowledgement once submitted.
After filing, check the registration particulars for the updated information. Keep in mind that amendment filing and certificate retrieval are separate tasks: use the certificate service only after an amended registration certificate has been issued.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHandle legal-name changes with care
Do not assume every change involving a business name follows the same process. The portal manual gives specific conditions for legal-name updates and directs them through the core amendment route in some contexts. Check the conditions shown for the particular registration and proposed change before filing. The available official material does not establish one uniform eligibility rule for every legal-name change.
In particular, do not decide that a name change is non-core merely because it is a change to a text field or because other stakeholder information appears in the non-core amendment menu. The route depends on the portal’s conditions for the particular legal-name change. If the conditions are unclear or the proposed change does not fit the available options, pause and seek guidance from the GST Portal or a qualified GST practitioner rather than submitting it under an unrelated category.

Find the amended registration certificate
Filing an amendment and obtaining an amended certificate are separate steps. Once the amendment has been processed and a certificate is issued, retrieve it from the portal:
- Sign in to the GST Portal.
- Go to Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates.
- Open the issued certificate that reflects the amended registration. The portal tutorial says certificates appear in chronological order and an amended registration certificate is displayed when details have been amended.
If the amended certificate is not available, first establish whether the amendment has been processed and whether a certificate has been issued; filing alone does not mean a new certificate is already available to download. The certificate page is where issued certificates can be viewed or downloaded, not a substitute for checking the status of an amendment that is still under review.
Because certificates are shown chronologically, review the issued entries to locate the one that reflects the amended registration. The distinction matters: the filing acknowledgement documents submission, while the issued amended certificate reflects the certificate available after processing. Do not confuse one with the other.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong status tool: Search Taxpayer checks an existing GSTIN or UIN profile; Track Application Status follows a filed application using its ARN.
- Trying to change an address as a non-core field: Business-place changes use the core amendment route, not the non-core form.
- Assuming every name change follows one rule: The portal manual specifies conditions, and legal-name changes use the core route in some contexts.
- Expecting identical treatment for every amendment: Core amendments require tax-officer approval; eligible non-core amendments are automatically approved after successful filing.
- Assuming auto-approval means every non-core filing is complete: The tutorial describes automatic approval after successful filing; follow verification and authentication prompts.
- Treating filing as certificate issuance: Retrieve a certificate only after an amended certificate is issued through the certificate page.
- Assuming a fixed processing time: The cited official material establishes officer review for core amendments but does not provide a dependable estimate applicable to all amendment types and jurisdictions.
If a proposed change does not clearly fit the field options or conditions displayed in the portal, avoid submitting it under a different category simply to proceed. A GST practitioner or tax-accounting professional may be useful for a complex or uncertain amendment. This is optional help, not a requirement for every status check or amendment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I search the details of a taxpayer registered under GST?
Use the GST Portal’s Search Taxpayer function and enter the taxpayer’s GSTIN or UIN. The pre-login result can show the identifier, legal and trade names, effective registration date, constitution of business, principal place of business, cancellation date if applicable, and details of returns filed. Additional data is available after login.
How do I check the status of a GST registration application I filed?
Sign in and go to Services > Registration > Track Application Status. Enter the ARN from the application filing acknowledgement. This is separate from Search Taxpayer, which checks the profile associated with an existing GSTIN or UIN.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I change my principal place of business through the non-core amendment form?
No. Principal and additional place of business changes use Services > Registration > Amendment of Registration Core Fields. The GST Portal’s non-core tutorial says an address change cannot be amended through the non-core application.
Best Value
Do non-core GST registration amendments need tax-officer approval?
The GST Portal tutorial says a successfully filed non-core amendment is automatically approved and reflected in the registration particulars without processing by a tax official. Follow the verification and authentication prompts; automatic approval applies after successful filing and does not make every field eligible for the non-core route.
Which details can be updated as non-core fields?
Eligible examples include authorized-signatory and stakeholder details, including promoters, partners, or karta. The portal’s available fields and prompts for the taxpayer’s account determine what can be amended through this route.
Does filing an amendment immediately provide a new registration certificate?
No. Filing and certificate issuance are separate steps. Once an amended certificate is issued, sign in and go to Services > User Services > View/Download Certificates. Issued certificates appear in chronological order.
How long does a core amendment take?
Core amendments require tax-officer approval, but the official material does not establish a single reliable processing time that applies to every amendment type and jurisdiction. Track the amendment through the portal rather than relying on a universal estimate.
Can I update a legal business name through the non-core route?
Do not assume so. The portal manual provides specific conditions and directs legal-name updates through the core amendment route in some contexts. Check the conditions for the particular registration and proposed change before filing.
The Bottom Line
Use Search Taxpayer with a GSTIN or UIN to inspect an existing registration, and Track Application Status with an ARN to follow an application. For amendments, classify the field first: business-place changes use the core route and require tax-officer approval, while eligible signatory and stakeholder changes use the non-core route and are automatically approved after successful filing. Retrieve an amended certificate separately once it has been issued.
