Check your Diversity Visa (DV) entry yourself through the U.S. Department of State’s Entrant Status Check at dvprogram.state.gov. You need the confirmation number saved after registration. For DV-2026, the Department said this online check was the only official way it notified entrants of selection; it did not mail selection letters or email successful entrants. A message demanding money or claiming you won is therefore a major scam warning.
Where to check your Diversity Visa lottery status
Use the Department of State’s official DV website, dvprogram.state.gov, and open Entrant Status Check (ESC). Government websites ending in .gov are the official source for DV information. Do not rely on a search result, social-media link, private “results checker,” immigration service, or message that sends you somewhere else.

The Department’s DV-2026 instructions identified the confirmation number as necessary to find out whether an entry was selected. It is the number generated when the online entry was submitted, not a payment receipt or an email from a private service.
What you need before you begin
Have the confirmation number from your own entry available, and identify the program year you are checking. A number from one entry cannot be substituted for another person’s number. If you entered more than once in different years, keep each confirmation record labeled separately so you do not accidentally use an old number on a current-year screen.

Use a device and browser you control, and type the address rather than following an unexpected link. Before submitting anything, read the complete address in the browser bar. A site can copy government logos and wording while using a commercial domain or a look-alike spelling. The .gov ending and the address you entered yourself are important checks, but still read the page carefully before providing information.
How to check your DV entrant status step by step
- Type the address yourself. Enter
dvprogram.state.govin your browser. Check that the address ends in.govbefore entering any information. - Open Entrant Status Check. Follow the link for the relevant program year. Select the status-check option rather than a private service or advertisement.
- Enter your confirmation number. Supply the confirmation number saved after your original registration, along with the other identifying details requested on the official page.
- Submit the form and read the complete result. Save or print the result page and any instructions. A selection notice tells you that the entry may continue in the DV process; it is not a promise that a visa will be issued.
- Follow only the instructions shown by the Department. If selected, use the official directions for the next application steps, deadlines, forms and fees. Do not substitute instructions from a person who contacted you first.
Write down the date you checked and the program year. If you later need help from a legitimate government office, those details make it easier to explain what you saw without forwarding your confirmation number to strangers.
The Department’s published material establishes the role of the confirmation number and the ESC process, but not a permanent annual design for every recovery or status screen. Labels can change by program year, so follow the current page rather than an old screenshot.

Selected for further processing
“Selected” means the entry was chosen to continue under the Diversity Visa program. It does not mean that you have already received a visa, that an interview is guaranteed, or that every eligibility requirement has been met. You must still complete the required process and remain eligible.
Use the wording “selected for further processing” when explaining the result to family or an adviser. Calling it a guaranteed green card or a completed visa can lead people to pay an unnecessary fee or miss an actual requirement. The official result page and current Department instructions control what happens next.
Not selected
A non-selection result means that entry was not selected for that program year. Do not pay someone who claims it can change the result, add your name later, or obtain a “second draw.” The Department’s status system is the authoritative place to read the result.
A result that does not match an earlier message
Trust the current official ESC result, not an email, letter or social-media post. On October 3, 2025, the Department reported possible selection-status errors affecting a small number of DV-2026 entrants associated with Cuba and Great Britain and its dependent areas and asked specified entrants to check ESC again. That notice is a reason to follow an applicable correction announcement; it is not evidence that DV results are commonly wrong.
If a correction notice applies to your program year or circumstances, reread the notice on a Department of State website and then recheck ESC yourself. Do not let a third party “interpret” a correction by asking for money or identity documents.

If the page is unavailable or you see no result
First confirm that you selected the correct program year and that the official status-check period has begun or has not ended. Dates are specific to each DV cycle. A page that is not yet open, a maintenance message, or an expired window is different from a non-selection result.
Check the Department’s latest announcement for that year rather than relying on a blog, video or message that predicts a date. If the Department has published a correction or availability update, follow that notice and return to ESC. Never treat a paid “early access” service as an alternative to the official release.
If you lost your confirmation number
First search the records you created when you submitted the entry: a saved confirmation page, printed copy, password-manager note or secure document. Never post the number publicly.
If the official site offers a recovery process for your program year, use that process directly on dvprogram.state.gov. The available sources confirm that the number is used to locate the entry but do not establish the exact fields or screens that a future recovery tool will require. Do not send the number, passport details, birth date, scans or money to an unsolicited person who promises to retrieve the result.
A private service cannot create an official selection, override ESC or guarantee a visa. If you cannot recover the number through the official site, check the Department’s current instructions for that program year rather than experimenting with unofficial forms.
Do they email you if you are selected?
No official selection email or letter should be treated as your DV result. The Department’s fraud guidance says that applicants may receive an email from the U.S. government reminding them to check their status online through DV Entrant Status Check, but they will not receive a notification letter or email informing them that they were a successful DV entrant.
The distinction is important:
- A reminder that directs you to check status online can be legitimate, but you should still type the official address yourself.
- A message saying “you won,” attaching a selection letter, or directing you to reply with personal information is not the official selection notice.
- A private organization is not authorized to notify you that you were selected or to tell you the official next steps.
Do not click a link in a surprising message merely because it uses a government logo or official-sounding language. Open a new browser window and go to the Department’s site independently. A legitimate reminder does not change the rule that the result must be read in ESC.

Common Diversity Visa scams and how to handle them
A fee to submit an entry
There is no fee to submit an online DV entry. A person or website that charges to enter your name into the lottery is misrepresenting the process. You may choose to pay for unrelated professional assistance, but no private payment is required to place an entry in the official drawing.

A fee to check whether you were selected
Checking your result through ESC does not require a private “status-check” subscription or a payment to unlock the page. A demand for money before you can see your result is a strong scam signal.
A guaranteed win or guaranteed visa
No one can guarantee selection or visa issuance. Selection is only permission to continue processing, and applicants must still satisfy program requirements and complete the government process.
A payment request disguised as an official fee
A Diversity Visa processing fee is associated with a later visa application by a selected entrant, not with submitting the initial entry or checking ESC. Treat a request to pay by gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer, cash courier or an unfamiliar personal account as suspicious. Verify any legitimate fee and payment instruction on the current Department of State information for your program year.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not assume that a message is genuine because it lists a dollar amount or uses the words “Department of State.” The key questions are when the fee is due, what official step it supports and whether the instruction appears on the current government website. If the only explanation comes from an unsolicited contact, stop and verify independently.
A fake recovery service
Scammers may claim that they can retrieve a lost confirmation number if you provide identity documents or a fee. Use only an official recovery feature if one is offered. The Department warns that fraudsters impersonate the U.S. government to obtain money or personal information.
A look-alike website or search advertisement
A commercial page may copy the appearance of ESC, promise faster results or place a payment form before showing information. Leave the page and type dvprogram.state.gov yourself. Search engines and social platforms do not decide whether a site is authorized; the Department’s .gov address does.
Official and unofficial channels compared
| Feature | Official process | Unofficial or fraudulent contact |
|---|---|---|
| Where you go | dvprogram.state.gov, a U.S. government .gov site |
A commercial domain, shortened link, social-media page or look-alike address |
| How selection is communicated | You enter your confirmation number in ESC and read the result there | An unsolicited email, letter, text or phone call claims that you won |
| Payment to submit an entry | No fee | A charge presented as necessary to enter |
| Payment to check status | Use ESC directly; no private payment is required | A fee to reveal, verify or “release” your result |
| Promises | Instructions explain that selection permits further processing and does not guarantee a visa | Guaranteed selection, guaranteed visa or a claim that someone can improve your odds after submission |
| Personal information | Entered only on the official page when required for the current process | Requests for passport scans, passwords, bank details or confirmation numbers through an unsolicited contact |
There is no competing legitimate provider that can check an entrant’s result instead of ESC. A lawyer, translator or other professional may offer separate services, but that person cannot replace the Department’s status system or change a selection.

How to protect your confirmation number and identity
- Keep the confirmation page in two secure places, such as an encrypted file and a printed copy stored privately.
- Do not publish the number in a forum, comment, group chat or social-media post.
- Use a unique password for the email account where you store DV records, and enable multifactor authentication when available.
- Inspect the browser address before entering a confirmation number or identity details. A padlock alone does not prove that a site is operated by the government.
- Save official instructions as a reference, but return to the live Department website for dates, forms and payment directions.
- If a message pressures you to act immediately, stop and verify independently. Urgency is a common social-engineering tactic.
- Keep screenshots and receipts privately if you need to report a scam, but redact the confirmation number before sharing evidence with others.
DV-2026 and DV-2027 dates: why the program year matters
DV-2026 status-check window
The official DV-2026 instructions said ESC would be available from May 3, 2025, through at least September 30, 2026. Those dates apply to DV-2026; they are not a universal annual schedule.

DV-2027 announcement
In an announcement dated November 5, 2025, the Department said it would announce the DV-2027 registration start date and the date results could become available through ESC later. It stated that the DV-2027 visa application period would remain October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. Because registration and result dates can be announced or adjusted separately, check the latest Department of State update before telling someone that registration or results are open or closed.
Do not infer a schedule from a previous year, a blog post or a message from a paid service. A date belongs to a specific program year and should be quoted with that year. The visa application period is not the same thing as the entry-registration period or the date ESC opens for results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many visas are available?
The Kentucky Consular Center describes the Diversity Visa program as making up to 55,000 immigrant visas available each year. “Up to” is important: it describes the program’s stated annual availability, not a guarantee that every selected entrant will receive a visa. Selection numbers, eligibility, processing capacity and statutory limits affect individual outcomes.
The figure also does not turn a selection notice into a visa approval. A selected entrant must continue through the official process within the applicable program-year rules. Anyone promising that payment will reserve one of the 55,000 visas is misrepresenting what the number means.
What to do after a suspected scam
- Stop communicating and do not send more money or documents. Preserve the email, phone number, payment instructions, receipts and web address.
- Check your status independently. Type
dvprogram.state.govand use ESC with your confirmation number. - Secure accounts. Change passwords if you disclosed them, enable multifactor authentication and contact your bank or payment provider promptly if money was sent.
- Report the incident through appropriate government or local law-enforcement channels. Include copies of the message and transaction records, but avoid posting your confirmation number publicly.
- Warn people privately and accurately. Share the official process and the scam indicators without forwarding a malicious link.
If you gave a scammer a passport scan or other identity document, keep a record of exactly what was disclosed and when. Be cautious of follow-up calls claiming to recover your money or “complete” your case; a second demand after an initial payment is another warning sign.
A practical pre-check checklist
- Am I on
dvprogram.state.govrather than a look-alike domain? - Do I have the confirmation number from my own entry?
- Am I checking the correct program year?
- Did I reach ESC myself instead of using a link in an unsolicited message?
- Is anyone asking me to pay to submit an entry, check status or guarantee a result?
- Does the message claim selection even though I have not checked ESC?
- Have I kept my confirmation number and identity documents private?
- Have I read the full result and saved the official instructions?
- Have I checked the Department’s current announcement for dates rather than relying on an old calendar?
The key distinction to remember
The official result lives in Entrant Status Check. A reminder email may tell you to look there, but a letter or email announcing that you won is not the Department’s selection notification. Entry is free, later visa processing has its own fee, and selection is an opportunity to continue—not a guaranteed Diversity Visa.

Best Value
Do they email you if you win the green card lottery?
The Department may send a reminder to check online, but it does not send a selection letter or email announcing that you were a successful entrant. Confirm any result in ESC.
Is a Diversity Visa lottery winning email a scam?
An email claiming that you won is not the official selection notice and should be treated as suspicious, especially if it requests money or personal documents. Type the official address yourself and check ESC.
Do I need to pay to check my DV lottery status?
No private payment is required to check status in ESC. Entry is free; a Diversity Visa processing fee applies later if a selected entrant proceeds with a visa application.

Search your saved confirmation page, printout or secure records. If the official site offers a recovery feature for your program year, use it there. Do not pay an unsolicited person or send identity documents to retrieve it.
Does being selected guarantee a Diversity Visa?
No. Selection means the entry may continue processing. The entrant must meet eligibility requirements, complete the official steps and remain within applicable program limits.
What should I do if an official result changes?
Follow a current Department of State correction notice that applies to your program year and recheck ESC yourself. Do not rely on a third party’s explanation or payment demand.
The Bottom Line
Check your status yourself at dvprogram.state.gov with your confirmation number. A reminder email may be genuine, but a message announcing that you won is not the official notice. Never pay to enter or check results, and remember that selection permits further processing rather than guaranteeing a visa.
