An unfamiliar loan, credit card, overdue payment or default on your TransUnion CIBIL report should be investigated promptly, but it is not automatically proof of identity theft. Compare the entry with your records, identify the exact field that is wrong, and file a dispute through myCIBIL (or CIBIL’s dispute form). CIBIL sends the dispute to the credit institution that supplied the data; the institution must authorize a correction before CIBIL can change the report.
This guide shows how to inspect the report, distinguish an ownership problem from an ordinary data error, submit and track a dispute, and respond when the lender does not correct the record.

What an incorrect CIBIL entry can look like
Read the report as a set of individual fields rather than looking only at the score. A problem can be in your identity details, an account’s ownership, or the way the lender has reported its status and payment history.
| Type of problem | Examples to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Identity or ownership | An account you do not recognise, the wrong borrower type, or an account associated with you when you were not the borrower or co-borrower | Confirm that the lender, account number and ownership information do not match your records. Treat an unfamiliar entry as an issue to investigate, not automatic proof of fraud. |
| Duplicate reporting | The same loan or card appears more than once | Compare lender name, account details, opening date, limit and balance. Note every duplicate line when you file the dispute. |
| Account status | A settled or closed account is shown as open, overdue or delinquent | Compare the status with the lender’s closure, settlement or no-dues records and dispute the status field. |
| Balance or credit limit | Outstanding balance, high-credit amount or sanctioned limit is wrong | Use statements or the lender’s written confirmation to identify the correct value and the relevant reporting date. |
| Payment and default details | A missed payment, days-past-due entry or default that you did not make, or that was reported after payment | Match the payment history month by month with bank records and lender receipts. Dispute the specific month or status rather than writing only “score is wrong.” |
These examples are consistent with the inaccuracies listed in TransUnion CIBIL’s consumer brochure, including duplicate accounts, closed accounts shown as open or delinquent, and incorrect balances or limits. See the CIBIL FAQ brochure for the bureau’s examples.

Get the report and preserve a dated copy
Obtain the report that contains the entry you want to challenge. CIBIL’s brochure directs consumers to enrol for the free annual report or log in and refresh an existing report, then use “Raise a dispute” if information remains incorrect. Report access labels and eligibility can change, so confirm the current options on CIBIL before signing up or paying for any service.
- Use the official CIBIL website and sign in to your myCIBIL account.
- Download or save the report, including the report date and report number if displayed.
- Keep a copy before making a dispute. A later report may show a different status, and the original copy helps you demonstrate what was reported.
- Store statements, payment receipts, closure letters, emails and complaint numbers in a private folder. Do not post account numbers, identity documents or other sensitive information in a public forum.
Do not rely on a screenshot of the score alone. The account name, ownership indicator, account number (often partially masked), dates, current balance, credit limit and payment history are the details needed to identify the disputed field.
Audit the report in a consistent order
1. Check the personal-information section
Look for misspelled names, incorrect addresses, unfamiliar phone numbers or other identity details. An identity mismatch can make it harder to associate an account with you, while an unfamiliar detail can indicate that a lender has supplied stale or inaccurate information. Record the exact value shown and the value you believe is correct.

Make a simple list of each loan, credit card, overdraft or other facility. For each line, compare the lender name, account identifier, account type, ownership (individual, joint or authorised user), opening date, closing date, current balance and credit limit with your own records. Mark accounts you do not recognise and apparent duplicates for separate investigation.
3. Examine status and payment history
Check whether an account is reported as open, closed, settled, written off, overdue or otherwise delinquent. Then inspect the monthly payment grid and any days-past-due values. A single incorrect month can affect a lender’s decision even when the current balance is zero, so identify the month and value rather than disputing only the overall score.

4. Reconcile dates and amounts
Compare the report’s last-updated date and balance with statements from the same period. A balance can legitimately differ from today’s amount if the lender reported before a payment was processed. The dispute should explain the reporting date and provide the amount or status supported by your records.
Unfamiliar account: possible fraud or an ordinary reporting error?
An account you do not recognise can result from mistaken identity, a duplicate record, a forgotten facility, an account on which you were an authorised or joint holder, or unauthorised use. The report itself generally cannot establish which explanation is true. First check old statements, messages, applications, family or business accounts and any change of name or address that could explain the listing.

Keep the ticket or complaint number. You can still file the CIBIL dispute while the lender investigates; describe the account as unrecognised and ask the institution to verify ownership and reporting. Avoid sending identity documents to an unverified phone number, email address or social-media account.
If you find evidence of unauthorised activity, follow the lender’s fraud process and any applicable law-enforcement or regulatory reporting process for your situation. Those actions are separate from correcting the CIBIL record. Filing a bureau dispute does not, by itself, prove fraud or guarantee that the account will be removed.

- Sign in to myCIBIL on the official CIBIL website.
- Open Credit Reports, then open the Dispute Center.
- Choose Dispute an Item (or the equivalent current label).
- Select the relevant report section, such as personal information or an account.
- Select the specific field that is inaccurate and enter the value you believe is correct. For an unrecognised account, identify the account clearly and state that you did not take or authorise it.
- Repeat the process for each incorrect field. CIBIL’s FAQ says multiple fields can be included in one dispute request, so list related errors together rather than submitting a vague score complaint.
- Review the entries and submit the request. Save the on-screen confirmation and the email containing the dispute summary, field details, status and dispute ID.
CIBIL also identifies a dispute form as an alternative to the online route. Use the current form and submission instructions published by CIBIL if you cannot access myCIBIL. Do not invent or omit details simply to fit a form’s character limit; explain the exact account and field in plain language.
Write a dispute that can be verified
A useful explanation answers four questions:
- Which record? Give the lender name and the account identifier as displayed in the report.
- Which field? Name the ownership, status, balance, limit, payment month or other field that is wrong.
- What is correct? State the replacement value or explain that the account is not yours.
- Why? Briefly refer to the statement, payment receipt, closure letter or other record that supports your position.
For example, “Account ending 1234 is shown as open with a balance of ₹18,500. The lender confirmed closure on 4 March 2026 and the final statement shows ₹0. Please verify the status and balance with the lender.” For a suspected identity issue, write “I do not recognise this account and did not apply for or authorise it. Please verify the borrower and application records.” Keep the wording factual; do not accuse a person or institution of criminal conduct unless you have evidence and are reporting it through the appropriate channel.
CIBIL’s FAQ says identity verification and documents may be requested. The public instructions do not establish one universal document checklist, so provide only the records requested through the authenticated CIBIL or lender process and redact unnecessary information when possible.
What happens after you submit
CIBIL’s role
CIBIL verifies the dispute and routes it to the credit institution that supplied the data. The institution checks its own records and tells CIBIL whether a correction is authorised. CIBIL’s loan-rejection and dispute FAQ states:
“CIBIL cannot make any change directly to your CIBILReport. Only once the change is authorized and provided by the concerned Credit Institution can your CIBIL Report be updated.”

That division of responsibility explains why a bureau submission is not an automatic deletion request. CIBIL cannot independently decide that a lender’s balance or default is wrong.
The “Under Dispute” status
While the matter is being reviewed, the disputed field may be marked Under Dispute. CIBIL’s consumer FAQ describes the status this way: “The disputed field(s) under relevant section(s) in your CIBIL Report will be marked as ‘Under Dispute’ until your dispute(s) is (are) resolved.” The marker shows that a challenge is active; it is not a finding that the entry is fraudulent or incorrect.
Possible outcomes
- Correction confirmed: The credit institution authorises the change and CIBIL updates the relevant field. CIBIL says it communicates the result by email.
- Information verified as reported: The institution does not support a change, so the entry remains. Read the response carefully and compare it with your records.
- Contact the institution: CIBIL may direct you to the lender for clarification or correction. Use the lender’s official grievance channel and keep proof of the request.
- More verification needed: CIBIL or the institution may request identity confirmation or supporting documents. Respond through the authenticated process and retain what you send.
How long a dispute takes
CIBIL’s dispute FAQ describes resolution as approximately 30 days, depending on the credit institution’s response. CIBIL’s contact page describes the RBI framework as 21 calendar days for the credit institution and 9 calendar days for the credit information company, a total of 30 calendar days. These are process timeframes, not a promise that every case will be corrected in 30 days.
| What to track | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Submission date and dispute ID | Lets you calculate the elapsed time and identify the case in follow-up messages. |
| Fields marked Under Dispute | Shows which parts of the report are being reviewed; other fields may not be included. |
| Emails and status changes | CIBIL uses email to send the dispute summary and outcome, and may ask for verification. |
| Lender complaint number | Provides a separate record when CIBIL directs you to the institution that supplied the data. |
| Updated report date | Confirms whether the corrected value has appeared after the institution authorises it. |
If there is no response near the stated timeframe, check the case in myCIBIL, review your email and contact CIBIL through the official dispute FAQ route or contact page. Keep the original submission and all follow-ups together.

If the lender rejects the correction or does not respond
Read the institution’s explanation before filing again. It may have verified the account but not addressed the particular field you selected, or it may require documents that were not included. Contact the institution directly using the account statement or its official website, describe the exact discrepancy, and request a written response or corrected reporting.
Best Value
CIBIL’s loan-rejection and dispute FAQ says a consumer can initiate a dispute again for re-verification. A second submission should add clarity: identify the field, explain what the first response missed, and attach or reference the relevant record when the authenticated process permits it. Repeatedly submitting the same general statement without new information is unlikely to resolve a lender-side record.
Do not assume that a rejected dispute means the report is legally final, and do not promise yourself a score increase. A correction can change the report, but the effect on a score or a lender’s decision depends on the complete credit file and the lender’s own assessment.
The 30-day compensation framework
CIBIL’s compensation page describes eligibility that may arise when information is not updated or rectified within the stipulated 30-day period. The contact page’s summary of the RBI framework separates the 21 calendar days allotted to the credit institution from the 9 calendar days for the credit information company.
This is a conditional framework, not an automatic payment for every delayed dispute. Eligibility can depend on the facts, the dates, the parties responsible and the current terms. Preserve your submission confirmation, lender complaint, status emails and updated reports. For the rule that applies to your case, consult the current CIBIL compensation framework and current official CIBIL or RBI guidance rather than relying on an old article or a social-media summary.
Practical checklist before you close the case
- Have you saved the report showing the original error and noted its date?
- Did you identify the exact account and field instead of disputing only the score?
- Did you distinguish an ownership question from a balance, status or payment-history error?
- Did you submit through myCIBIL or the current CIBIL dispute form and save the dispute ID?
- Did you keep the confirmation email and monitor the Under Dispute status?
- If directed to the lender, did you use its official channel and save the complaint number?
- Did you check a later report to confirm whether an authorised correction appeared?
- Did you avoid sharing full account or identity details in public posts?
Key points to remember
Start with the report, not an assumption. An unfamiliar account deserves investigation, but only the lender’s records can establish ownership and reporting accuracy. Make the dispute precise, preserve every confirmation, and understand the bureau–institution split: CIBIL can route and communicate the dispute, while the credit institution must authorise a change. The published process is approximately 30 days, with CIBIL describing 21 calendar days for the institution and 9 for the credit information company. If the first response does not address the evidence, contact the institution and use CIBIL’s re-verification route with a clearer, field-by-field explanation.
