The most reliable pre-install check is to boot the Linux distribution’s live USB and use the computer without touching its internal drive. Join a Wi‑Fi network and load a page, test every audio output and input you need, then suspend and resume the machine—twice if sleep reliability matters. These functional tests reveal problems that simply seeing a device listed cannot.
Use the same distribution and release you plan to install. A result from an Ubuntu live image is evidence about that image, its bundled drivers, and that particular computer; it is not a guarantee for every distribution, kernel, firmware combination, or later configuration.

What a live-session test can—and cannot—prove
A live session runs Linux from a USB drive, normally leaving the computer’s internal storage unchanged. Ubuntu’s “Try Ubuntu” preview is specifically intended to check hardware before installation. If you choose the preview rather than the install option, you can test networking, audio, graphics, input devices, and sleep while retaining your existing operating system and files.
The test is useful because it exercises the actual computer: its wireless chipset, antenna, audio codec, firmware, power-management behavior, and the drivers included in that image. It is still a snapshot. Ubuntu notes that the preview uses open-source drivers and may not include proprietary drivers that could be available after installation. Conversely, a device that works in the preview can behave differently after updates, a different kernel, or a changed power-management setting.

Ubuntu’s installation guidance also says that network access can allow the installer to download updates and third-party drivers. Therefore, record whether a feature worked with the live image alone, and do not treat a live-session failure as conclusive until you know whether the final installation would have access to an additional driver.
Prepare evidence before you boot
Identify the exact computer
Write down the manufacturer model, screen size or processor variant if the model has several revisions, and any wireless or audio hardware information shown in the firmware setup. A model name alone can hide different chipsets. When available, search the target distribution’s certified-hardware list for the exact model. Ubuntu describes certified devices as systems tested and confirmed to work well with Ubuntu, making certification useful supporting evidence for that vendor’s tested configuration.
Certification is not a universal Linux guarantee. It does not establish behavior on another distribution, a different release, a hardware revision that was not tested, or a separately upgraded component. If the computer is not listed, use the live preview rather than assuming it is incompatible.
Choose the matching image
Download the release you actually intend to install and create its live USB. The current Ubuntu preview documentation available in October 2026 describes Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS. The directly opened Ubuntu installation tutorial is for Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS, so do not mix conclusions from those releases without recording which image you tested. Other distributions and releases package different kernels, firmware, and driver versions.

Use a suitable USB drive
Ubuntu recommends a flash drive of at least 8 GB for its live preview. Creating installation media erases the selected USB drive. Back up anything on it, verify the drive’s identity in the media-writing tool, and expect the process to replace its existing contents. The USB is only the test medium; it does not change the internal disk unless you later start the installer and confirm an installation.
Boot without installing
- Insert the prepared USB, restart the computer, and open its one-time boot menu or firmware boot settings.
- Select the USB device. If the computer refuses to boot it, check firmware settings such as Secure Boot or boot order before treating that as a hardware-support result; a boot-menu problem is not a Wi‑Fi, sound, or suspend test.
- At the distribution menu, choose the preview, “Try,” or equivalent live-session option—not the option that starts installation.
- Wait for the desktop to finish loading. Keep the computer connected to AC power during testing, especially while checking suspend.
- Record the distribution name, release, kernel or image information shown by the desktop if available, computer model, and date. This context makes later model-specific troubleshooting meaningful.
Test Wi‑Fi as a real task
Confirm the radio is visible
Open the desktop’s network menu and look for a wireless interface and nearby networks. A listed adapter is only a detection result. It does not prove that the driver can associate with an access point, obtain an address, or pass traffic.
Connect and use the connection
- Turn Wi‑Fi on in the network menu.
- Select the network you intend to use, enter its password, and wait for the connected state.
- Load a normal web page or perform another ordinary network task. This checks association, authentication, address assignment, routing, and basic data transfer together.
- Move a short distance from the access point and repeat the task if range matters to you. A connection that works only beside the router may not meet your needs.
If the network menu says wireless is unavailable, check whether the radio is blocked before concluding that Linux lacks support. In a terminal, run rfkill list. The Ubuntu Noble reference documents the rfkill utility as part of util-linux version 2.39.3-9ubuntu6.6.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Interpret a block correctly
A software block can generally be cleared with the desktop’s Wi‑Fi switch or an appropriate rfkill unblock command. A hard block—such as a physical wireless switch or a firmware-controlled airplane-mode state—remains unavailable after a software unblock. Check the keyboard wireless key, side switch, and firmware airplane-mode setting. If the hard-block state persists, the live image cannot use the radio until that control is changed.

Test every audio path you depend on
Built-in speakers
- Open the desktop sound settings and select the internal speakers.
- Play a known audio or video file. Raise the output volume and verify that mute is off.
- Listen for a clean, continuous signal rather than a brief click that only proves the device opened.
Headphones and external outputs
Plug in the headphones, dock, monitor, or other output you expect to use. Select that output explicitly and play audio again. Test automatic jack detection by unplugging and reconnecting if that behavior matters. HDMI or DisplayPort audio may appear as a separate output from the internal speakers; test it independently.
Microphone input
If you use calls, recording, accessibility tools, or voice commands, test the built-in microphone and any headset or USB microphone separately. Use the desktop’s input meter or a simple recording-and-playback check. Confirm that the intended microphone is selected, input is not muted, and the level responds when you speak.
ALSA’s Linux-kernel documentation describes driver configuration and device-specific control quirks. That is why a detected sound card does not prove that the output, input, jack switching, volume controls, or mute state you need will work. Record each path as working, silent, distorted, or missing instead of marking audio as a single yes-or-no result.

Test suspend and resume, not just shutdown
Run a complete cycle
- Save any notes in the live desktop and close applications that could obscure the result.
- Choose the desktop’s Suspend or Sleep command. Confirm that the display turns off and the machine enters a low-power state.
- Wait long enough to distinguish suspend from a momentary screen blank, then wake the computer with the power button or a permitted key.
- Check that the display returns, the keyboard and touchpad respond, and the desktop is usable.
- Reconnect to the network if necessary and load a page. Play sound through the output you tested and check the microphone if it is important.
- Repeat the cycle. A computer that resumes once can still fail intermittently.
Ubuntu’s suspend guidance warns that hardware may not support suspend properly and that devices can fail after resume when their drivers do not handle suspend correctly. The meaningful result is therefore not merely “the screen went dark.” It is “the computer entered sleep, resumed, and the functions I rely on remained available.”
Classify the failure
- Will not enter suspend: the system may ignore the request, immediately wake, or remain active. Note the exact behavior.
- Black screen after wake: the computer may have resumed partially while the display path failed.
- Network lost after wake: Wi‑Fi may need a reconnect, or its driver may not restore correctly.
- Audio missing after wake: the output device or mixer state may not have returned.
- Freeze or forced power-off: treat this as a serious compatibility warning and repeat only after recording what happened.
Use a repeatable results sheet
A small record prevents a vague “Linux worked” conclusion and makes comparisons fair. Use one row for each function and include the conditions under which it was tested.
| Area | Pass condition | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Wi‑Fi | Adapter detected, network joined, ordinary page or task completed | Network band if relevant, distance from access point, any rfkill block, reconnect behavior |
| Speakers | Continuous audio from built-in speakers at a usable level | Selected output, mute or volume problems, distortion |
| Headphones/external output | Expected jack, dock, HDMI, or DisplayPort path plays audio | Output name, plug/unplug switching, whether manual selection was needed |
| Microphone | Input meter or recording responds from the intended microphone | Device selected, mute state, level, recording result |
| Suspend/resume | Enters sleep, wakes reliably, display and required devices work afterward | Number of cycles, wake method, Wi‑Fi and audio state after each cycle |
Also record the computer model and revision, distribution and release, live-image or kernel information, firmware settings you changed, and whether the test used only open-source drivers. A report from a different release or machine revision is not conclusive evidence for yours.

How to weigh the evidence
Strongest evidence: the exact live image on the exact machine
A successful functional test on the target release is the most direct evidence available before installation. It demonstrates that the tested image can operate the hardware under those conditions. It does not promise identical behavior after updates, proprietary-driver installation, or a different kernel.

Useful supporting evidence: certification and model reports
An entry on the distribution vendor’s certified list supports the expectation that the tested Ubuntu configuration works well. Community reports can add detail about revisions and quirks, but compare the complete model identifier, wireless and audio chipsets, distribution release, and observed behavior before applying someone else’s result.
Weak evidence: detection alone
A device name in a settings panel, a network icon with no successful page load, or a sound card listed without playback is not a functional pass. Likewise, a single suspend cycle that resumes to a broken Wi‑Fi or audio device is not reliable suspend support.
If a check fails
Wi‑Fi failure
- Check the desktop wireless switch and run
rfkill listto distinguish a block from a missing driver. - Clear a software block and retry. If a hard block remains, inspect the physical switch, keyboard toggle, and firmware airplane-mode control.
- Confirm that you tested the intended release. A different release may package different firmware, but its result cannot be substituted silently.
- Write down the adapter identity and exact error state before searching for model-specific guidance or deciding whether to install.
Sound failure
- Test each output separately and verify the selected device, mute state, and volume.
- Check the microphone input selector and meter rather than assuming the built-in microphone is active.
- Repeat after reconnecting headphones or an external display, because jack and display outputs can be separate devices.
- Record whether the card is detected but silent, or absent entirely; those cases point to different driver or control problems.
Suspend failure
- Repeat once with external USB devices and docks disconnected, noting whether the result changes.
- Check every required function immediately after wake, especially Wi‑Fi, display, and audio.
- Do not treat a crash, forced restart, or repeated failure as a minor inconvenience if suspend is essential to your workflow.
- Keep the release and kernel information with the report; suspend behavior is driver- and hardware-dependent.
Comparing two installation choices
When comparing two computers, distributions, or releases, use the same procedure and the same pass criteria. Compare the exact computer model and hardware revision, distribution and release, live-image or kernel information, and observed results for Wi‑Fi, each required audio path, and repeated suspend/resume.

Do not turn one successful preview into a percentage or rank systems using invented numbers. A concise comparison can instead state, for example, that one exact combination connected and survived two suspend cycles while another required a manual unblock or lost audio after resume.
Before you start the installer
- Back up important files even though the preview itself is designed not to change the internal disk.
- Keep the tested USB image available until installation and first boot are complete.
- Save your results sheet and any driver or firmware notes.
- Ensure you have network access if you want the installer to download updates or third-party drivers.
- Decide in advance which failures are acceptable. If suspend is essential, a repeated resume failure is a reason to investigate further before replacing the existing system.
After installation, repeat the same Wi‑Fi, audio, and suspend checks. The installed system may have a newer kernel, additional firmware, proprietary drivers, or different settings, so the live-session result is a valuable baseline rather than a permanent guarantee.
