How to Check Who a Phone Number Belongs to Before Replying

Search the number to see whether it has public listings or reports, but treat the results only as clues—not proof of who contacted you. Caller ID names and displayed numbers can be spoofed. If an unexpected caller claims to represent a company, bank, or government agency, hang up and contact it using a number you find independently on its official website or a statement. For a suspicious text, do not reply or tap its links.

What a phone-number search can—and cannot—tell you

Search the full number as displayed, including its country or area code. Results may show a public business listing or reports from other people. Check multiple independent results, and remember that user-submitted reports are unverified allegations. Listings can be incomplete or out of date, and a clean search result does not establish that a caller is safe.

Even a familiar name or number on your screen does not authenticate the person contacting you. The Federal Trade Commission warns that scammers can make any name or number appear on caller ID. A reverse search also cannot prove that the person contacting you currently controls the number.

How to verify a caller claiming to represent an organization

  1. Pause before acting. Urgency, threats, requests for secrecy or payment, and demands for passwords or security codes are reasons to stop and verify independently. A caller knowing personal details is not proof of legitimacy.
  2. End the call or ignore the message. Do not use a callback number supplied by the caller or tap a link in an unexpected message.
  3. Find the organization’s contact channel yourself. Open its official website or app, or consult an account statement or card you already have.
  4. Call the published number or check the claim in the official app. This lets you ask the organization whether the contact was genuine without relying on the incoming caller’s details.

Ofcom advises independently contacting the organization rather than relying on the number or link in an unexpected contact. The FTC gives similar advice for avoiding scams. Ofcom’s guidance on what to do about a scam call or message and the FTC’s advice on avoiding scams explain the approach.

What to do with an unknown text

Do not reply to ask who it is, click a link, or provide personal or account details. Ofcom says replying to an unknown sender can confirm that your number is active—even if you are trying to opt out. If a text claims there is a delivery, bill, or account problem, open the relevant service’s app or website yourself and check there. Ofcom’s scam-contact guidance covers suspicious texts; Apple also advises contacting a company directly if an unexpected message or request seems suspicious: Recognize and avoid social engineering schemes.

Which number-checking option should you use?

Option Useful for Limitation
Search engine or reverse-number directory Finding public business listings or reports from other people Coverage may be incomplete or stale; results do not authenticate the person contacting you.
Organization’s official website, app, or account statement Finding a callback channel or checking a claim independently You need to navigate to it yourself rather than follow an incoming link.
Built-in phone screening, a third-party app, or a carrier filter Flagging, screening, or blocking suspected spam A warning—or no warning—does not prove identity. Features vary by device, carrier, and region.
Replying to an unknown text Not a safe way to identify the sender Ofcom warns that replying can confirm your number is active.

Use screening and blocking to reduce nuisance calls

Phone settings, carrier services, and apps can help flag, screen, or block suspected spam, but they do not verify who is calling. Ofcom lists Apple Screen Unknown Callers, Samsung Smart Call, Hiya, and Truecaller as examples; availability and capabilities can vary. Check your phone’s settings or ask your carrier what filtering it offers. If you install an app, use a trusted app store. Ofcom’s guidance on protecting yourself from scam calls and messages covers screening options.

Google’s June 2, 2026 post describes fake-call detection in a specific situation: it can flag suspected spoofed calls when both the contact and recipient use Phone by Google. That feature is not a general guarantee that a call is genuine. The same post attributes a $2.95 billion loss figure to FTC reporting on impersonation scams in 2024; it does not identify those losses as caused specifically by spoofed calls or by replying to unknown numbers. Google’s post on Android fake-call detection describes the scenario.

Report suspected scam calls and texts

Reporting routes depend on where you live. In the UK, Ofcom advises forwarding suspicious mobile texts and scam numbers to 7726; it also lists Report Fraud and Police Scotland for scam calls. In the US, you can report scams to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Elsewhere, follow your local authorities’ official guidance. The UK’s shortcode and reporting process are not universal.
